We just returned from a week a the Sunset Grand, this was a budget vacation so we promised ourselves to make the best of everything and not ruin our vacation over the little stuff.
This isn't that bad a hotel, however is fails as a 4 star in almost every aspect, it is a solid 3 star and if it was rated as that, I think there would be fewer negative reviews for this resort. - now from what we understand there is a difference between the south tower and north tower.
I figured I would go over the main points and how it fails as a four star, some of these were very minor to us, but others reading might find these points helpful.
Room: we were on the 3rd floor of the north tower overlooking a roof and some cooling towers, we could see the ocean (not the beach) from our room - but the view was not great. - we didn't complain, just accepted it. Who wants to spend their vacation at the front desk everyday looking for a room change?
How the room failed as a four star: on the surface it looked clean, but the tile floor was filthy and the headboard had mould and dirt on it, screen door to balcony required all our strenth to open, it was corroded and had a makeshift lock on it consisting of a bent wire which was difficult to put in the holes. The pillows smelled bad. ( we didn't complain )
No Shampoo, and soap was distributed sparingly, No fridge or water - but the tap water seemed drinkable, TV was good and channel selection was excellent. (we asked for extra soap and got it without a problem)
Buffet: Most guests we talked with seemed to love it. We thought it was OKAY - a decent 3 star buffett, with two or three meat selections each day. It got repetative VERY quickly - but we ate off the resort often. I think we were the exception as most people loved the food, so I wouldn't let this deter you from the resort, unless you are wanting a high end buffet like a 4 star in Mexico.
Pools: Filthy - one day we went to the swim up bar, got in looked at what we were sitting in - visible debris floating in the water and a film on top of the water - looked like white ameobas - we jumped out and showered - we did use the water slides a few times - they were great - just showered well after them
Hot Tubs: YUCK (i will sound like a prude here - but I don't care - I own a hot tub and feared for the health of the people using them) - people actually had babies in the hot tub with diapers - do they have any idea what a breeding ground for bacteria hot tubs are? - we could smell the chlorine flashing off of the hot tubs, there is NO WAY they were safe to use, I should have brought some test strips down with me. A hot tub cannot handle that kind of load even after shocking they would be unsafe within an hour with the number of people we witnessed in them. These really should have been adult only and tested much more. - we didn't complain - just didn't use them. Remember you are on vacation and Hot Tubs are known to spread bacteria - I wouldn't risk it if I were you.
Beach: Small and crowded, get up early if you want a chair anywhere at this resort - beach sand was fairly clean - we do not sit on the beach much, so this didn't bother us - but we did go snorkelling one day in the resorts 'designated area' - for a first time snorkeller it would be a nice little introduction and from what I saw the resorts equipment looked pretty decent for someone wanting to try it out - the amount of garbage in the bay was terrible, plastic bags and foil wrappers littered the ocean floor. There were a few fish to see: Parrot Fish, Tang, Seargant Majors ect.. We wanted to find a better spot, but the other reef areas were heavily trafficked by boats, so we didn't want to swim out to them on our own, we could have gone on a paty tour to snorkel them. The resort had kayaks which were in good shape and a hobie cat - but you could only go out with a staff member and they had a very long waiting list. - reember this is a small bay that is basically a marina - the roped off 'safe' areas are very small.
Staff: All very polite - but just NOT ENOUGH staff for the number of guests - outside of the restaurants the service was slow or non-existant even when tipping.
A la cartes: we only did the Caribean (twice) and the Asian, both were good (not excellent - just good) - service was poor on our second visit to the Caribean, but that was just our server having a bad night - no biggie. - we were a little put off by the photographers coming in the al a cartes wanting to take pictures of everyone to sell them later, we wanted a nice quiet romantic dinner - but this was a minor thing - the only reason I bring it up is to give an idea of the way this resort is.
Kids Club: we didn't use it (we didn't take our kids)- but this deserves a mention as we were put in an uncomfortable spot of trying to stop children fighting - when some of them came to us scared, apparently the kid's club for the older children was closed (at least for a few days) - and the fighting between the children got out of hand in the game area, my wife and I were trying to play pool and the children were fighting literally over taking turns and sharing the equipment - one larger boy was threatening the little kids, some other kids threw rocks, the resorts answer was to take away the badminton net - I think the resort should have had the kids club open and have some organized activities for them or at least organized who's turn it was.
Booze: I only drink beer and the wife coconut rum - it was okay - I didn't like the beer but found the light red stripe better - unfortunately they were always running out of it and just gave me regular red stripe - thinking I wouldn't know - I smiled and drank it anyway.
Location: you have to have a thick skin to walk off the resort (especailly at night) - this should be a whole other review.
Entertainment: seems there were four animation staff - not much going on really - they could have done so much more with the facilities and people available. We caught parts of a couple shows - the magician and music acts were okay - the animation team was pathetic on stage - we walked away from the pirate show after the staff wanted the audience to vote (by clapping and yelling) - which 6 year old had the better costume - of course this made one kid run off stage crying. we left after that so can't say if it got better.
Other guests: mostly English speaking Canadians - so all pretty good people, a few young groups trying to drink the bar dry lol - but all in all a good bunch - we didn't really conect with any groups or other couples as we normally do, I think this had to do with our mindset as well as the size of the resort. Lots of small children - I think this resort is good for families - but I wouldn't take your children in to town.
LINE-UPS - there was a line up for EVERYTHING, every bar had a line-up, the buffett always had line-ups, the beach activities had line-ups - this to me was the biggest dissapointment, and why I gave a low score for service. Also for a four star there was no beach, poolside or table service - you had to line-up for everything except for the al-a-cartes everything was SELF-SERVE.
Would we return - MAYBE - if the price was right, we like a smaller resort and this one was crowded and noisy. We like long walks on the beach - this beach was small. This was our 10th all inclusive (first in Jamaica) and I think we are now at the point where we want more from our travel experience than being in a crowded compound.
Overall - a decent Budget vacation - perhaps good for a family vacation. It is a SOLID 3 star resort and I think most people would happy with it - not thrilled but satisfied, the resort could be so much more with more staff.
