I will be the first to say we were skeptical of this resort because we let the negative trip TripAdvisor reviews weigh in. However, my wife and I had the best vacation we have ever had. I will try to break my review down into a few segments, room, food, service, and miscellaneous. Prepare yourself, might be lengthy.
Check-In and Room:
We arrived in Montego Bay around 11am, and boarded a bus, when we arrived at Secrets and our luggage was taken off the bus, a very friendly bellman said "OK you are on vacation now, don't touch your bags, eat, drink, rest, and repeat, no more work, we will take care of it". What a great way to start. Because we arrived so early, and the resort was 100% full the day prior, our room wasn't ready yet. No big deal, we went and had lunch, and by the time we finished lunch, our room was ready. We arrived in our room to find a nicely decorated, king bed, with balcony, and beautiful view of the ocean. Your fridge has some red stripe, pop, and water in it, which was plenty. The bathroom/shower was very nice as well, some basic suplies are provided (i.e. soap, shampoo, sewing kit, shoe polish) are provided. THE BED!!! Best bed I have ever, ever slept in.
Now, mid trip we were offered an opportunity to upgrade to preferred club, we had initially declined it, and yes, it is pushed, but a polite no thank you is all that is needed to be said. We decided we might as well see all that is offered. They gave us a discounted rate, which I promised I wouldn't disclose, however I do know it was cheaper than the standard upgrade. We had a room with the swim out to the pool, however it does not connect to the main pool, and it is cold/but refreshing after sitting in the sun all day. It also has a private tub on the balcony for a nice soak. There is also a bottle of vodka, rum, and brandy in your room. Aside of that, you get access to the private beach and pool, and a small buffet and bar in the lobby, but in reality you can walk just a few feet off the building and get the same food and drink, I guess it's all in what you want. You also get free internet access, however, for the first time in a long time I detached myself from the world, and had no need for it. So when it comes down to the room, now don't get me wrong, the rooms were both spectacular, however I think we would stay in the regular, it met our needs, but if you want to "Live it up" preferred club is great too. Side note, I saw reviews that indicated people do preferred club because the other sides are to noisy, we never found noise to be an issue.
Food: Two MINOR issues in the food was the Hot Dog, being from the Chicago area, I consider myself a hot dog expert and this was not a good hot dog, did not finish it. The other issue was hot chocolate from the coffee bar, my wife took a small sip, and said somethings not right, I smelt it, not good, we did notice the milk looked different to us, maybe it was just us. Now that being said, the rest of our food/dining experiences were perfect! We ate at the buffet, Oceana, Bordeaux, Blue Mountain, Himitsu, Portofino, and Seaside Grill. All of which had DELICIOUS food, never once did we dislike a meal, we saw a lot of complaints about portion size on here, and here is what my wife and I concluded. Each dinner restaurant offers you 5 courses, and if you had each course, there was no way you could leave hungry. If you did feel hungry still, I guess you could probably ask for more, or go to another restaurant. But we always felt as if we were full, not stuffed, but full. Each course is what I guess us Americans would call small, but again, we felt like we ate very well! If you go hungry here, it is your fault, plenty of food and drink to go around. We never felt the service was slow, but we also were on vacation, and carried that mindset the whole trip.
Service:
Plain and simple, the staff did anything you needed, everything was "No Problem", "No worries", or "My pleasure". Never once did we feel disrespected, mishandled, or not cared for. From the groundskeeper, to the management, rarely did you see one staff member that didn't say hello, how are you, or welcome to Jamaica. Phillip in the Baracuda bar taught me about Cricket, and we had some laughs, nice bartender. Eric in the Wild Orchid Pool bar also was quite the mix master. Our house keeper did a fantastic job, every day! Even left us nice notes from time to time. Room service was efficient and fast, our deliver man brought us our lunch balanced on his head, worth a couple extra dollars to me :-) The staff makes this resort what it is, welcoming, relaxing, AMAZING.
Ok, one extra section:
Jerk Chicken, YOU MUST!! I REPEAT, YOU MUST!! Sheldon comes from the Wild Orchid side somewhere between 1130-1200, get it while you can, he does run out but much later in the day. The "Magic Sauce", if you don't get it on your chicken, then don't bother getting the chicken. Would be a waste not to. You will hear him and his famous "JERKY, JERKY, JERKY!!!" Follow your nose and ears at that point.
One more, entertainment:
We were pretty low key, but did enjoy some resort entertainment. Two good nights, and one work in progress. Shyam Moses is a must see, he did an acoustic set outside, we bought his CD after, and plan on buying the rest of them. The house band (Blow Wow) was great also, they were having some keyboard issues that night, but never really affected the show. The work in progress, the resort tried to put on something similar to Cirque Du Soleil, if you went in with the mind set that these people are going to work very hard to provide you a great night of entertainment you will enjoy it. If you think you are seeing Cirque Du Soleil you probably will be on here complaining. Truthfully the annoying part of the act was the MC, not the talent, again, they are trying extremely hard to entertain, enjoy it and don't hate on them.
In closing, Great Resort, Great Food, Great Service, We have been gone for less than 24 hours and I miss it already, I am listening to Reggae as I write this, and could use a rum punch or two. If we go back to Jamaica we will be back at Secrets, if you we travel elsewhere, and their is a Secrets, we will stay there.
If you want to know anything else, shoot me a message, I hope you enjoy the Best Kept Secret in Jamaica.
Respect my friends!
