“A relaxing vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We went to this resort to celebrate our anniversary and were not disappointed! The staff were very friendly and helpful when we checked into the resort. When we got to our room, there was a "Happy Anniversary" sign on our door. We also received a bottle of champagne and a bouquet of flowers. We've been to other resorts in the past that didn't do anything to recognize our anniversary.
Our room had a great view of the ocean (which I believe that most of them contain). The bed was the most comfortable of any resort I've ever been and the room was very modern and nice. I checked out other reviews before going on this vacation and the photos that are posted are pretty much what you get for the room. No surprises.
The resort was very clean and having been built in 2010, was quite up to date.
There were a variety of restaurants to chose from for dinner and the lunch selection of diners was pretty good as well. One thing that I wasn't too keen on was their house wine. It wasn't the best, however they give you the opportunity to purchase other wines from a list at a reasonable price. You get coupons ($200 worth I believe) when you arrive on the resort and you can use them toward the spa or bottles of wine, which was nice.
They had 2 pools on each side of the property (the resort combines the St. James with the Wild Orchid side), one was heated and contained the swim up bar. The other wasn't heated.
At lunch time, there was a BBQ wagon with jerk chicken available along the walkway near the pools. It was awesome and a nice alternative from going to the restaurant for lunch if you wanted to stay around the pool or in your lounge chair. There was also a guy with a wagon full of coconuts and pineapples that he would carve for you to either drink or eat. Very refreshing!
One of the things that I really liked was that they had a cooler full of bottled water along the walkway of the resorts stocked during the day.
The gym was nice, but they had limited motorized equipment (3 treadmills: 2 of them were dated and didn't work so well) which was disappointing. They had a fridge full of water and cold face cloths for you to use, which I though was a nice touch in the gym for when you could get time on the equipment.
We met vacationers that would complain about something or other, but there's always going to be someone to complain.
Overall, the resort was quite nice, the food was great and the service was good as well. I would definitely return to this resort and recommend it to others!

Awesome food, the best. The best service, the most friendliest staff throughout the resorts, the best massage, the best room with a view of the beach (and we didn't even have a seaside) , did I say the BEST food and service! Endless pampering! Can't wait to come back home to Jamaica!! Thanks to all of you who made this my best trip ever!

Room Tip: I don't think there would be a bad room.

“Don't get me wrong...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I visited this resort for a getaway from everyday life. The resort is very beautiful, clean and upscale. I have vacationed at several AI's throughout my years. When I first arrived I didn't find it to be as grand as I have experienced at other resorts. The entrance to the resort is odd and the lobby is small, still it is very nice. I traveled solo and I would not recommend traveling alone to this resort. This resort would be classified as a honeymoon/couples resort. It is very romantic! The food choices are very good, i love the fact that you don't have to make reservations at the restaurants. The World Cafe serves "surf & turf" on Fridays for all seafood lovers. I found it a little weird that all the restaurants are located in one central location. It's just something that I haven't experienced before. The staff at this resort are very nice and professional. There is no one bothering you. I really wish I remembered the name of the wonderful lady that checked me in. She was very polite and professional. The next morning after checking in I was sitting by the coffee bar and the young lady came and found me and greeted me by my name asking me if I was having a good stay. I found that very nice and a personal touch of service was added! She was honestly a great lady working for Secrets. I did however remember a couple of names, Shelly at the Piano bar was just fantastic. I got to the Piano Bar and before I even sat down I was asked if i would like a drink. Within three minutes of sitting down two other fantastic bartenders came and I asked if i was thirsty. The service is fantastic! The entertainment team does a great job but I would recommend a little more energy at this resort. Cherice from the entertainment team was wonderful, she is such a sweetheart. I spent some time getting to know her. The lobby bar wasn't so much exciting, I was hoping to relax in there like i have done at several other AI's but after spending some time in there i was not feeling so welcomed and i was feeling some type of negative comfort from the bartender, I don't know if she was talking about the customers but she just didn't have any energy to be working as a front face in the lobby bar!!!! I would've liked more of the airy atmosphere in the lobby and the lobby bar. It just seems so small and closed in. I would recommend this resort to honeymooners and people looking for romantic getaway, but not to a group of singles or a single traveling alone. I would recommend this resort for the top shelf liquor, wide variety of food choices, and luxurious accommodations. I did try the Spa out, it was great and would recommend for everyone to get a stress relieving massage here. After everything said and done, I had a great relaxing time at this resort. I would only go back if I was going with my other half. Also, just a side note the entertainment ends very early, the resort is pretty much dead around 12am. Even though the nightclub goes till 2am, i was the ONLY one in there at 12:05am!

Room Tip: I had a room on the 5th floor and I loved it. Great view of the ocean and ultimate privacy is on th...

“Excellent experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We (my babe and I) hoildayed for 10 nights in Secrets St James at the end of January and had a fabulous time there.

Room - airy, spacious, clean, well appointed and with exceptionally comfortable super king size bed. Plenty of towels, changed twice a day, Bed linen changed as often as requested etc. Mini bar restocked daily with water, beer and soft drinks which was lovely to enjoy beverages on the balcony!. 100+ TV channels. Ocean view was beautiful. Also loved the jacuzzi bath. We didn't have an outside hot tub and don't feel that we missed out.

Dining - Breakfast excellent, Giddy Coffee Man "Oneill" was a big hit. Well done him. Amazing choice of breakfast foodstuffs. Generally great levels of choice at lunch and dinner, somewhere different to try everyday. Special praise for jerky jerky chicken available during the day - very tasty. Particularly good restaurants were the Seaside Grill, Teppanaki and italian (gorgeous bread and oils to start). We missed the lobster evening (fridays) which apparently is excellent. We did not rate Bordeaux (french) but maybe our meal choice was wrong. Generally evening dining was a nice romantic experience, with good food but nothing sensational - desserts were fairly limited in each of the restaurants. Afternoon irish coffees and buns in the coffee shop were enjoyable. We also liked the ice cream treat machine. One final point on the dining aspect is the "distance" from St James to the restaurants. Basically there was no distance. Anybody that can't walk 2 mins from their room to a restaurant should stay at home and turn the oxygen up on their ventilator.....

Enterainment - bars were fun, we enjoyed the piano bar experience and the Jamaican steel drum show - really brilliant. The entertainment wasn't "In your face" - we joined in when we wanted to. The beach party was great, music, dancing, food, toasting marshmallows etc - felt really lovely to party in bare feet! Water sports offered as part of the all inclusive were really great - we tried the snorkeling and kayaking. We paid to go tubing - $45 - and this was super fun. Sunset jacuzzi was a real treat and it was nice enjoying a drink there in the evening.

Beverages: All drinks were included in the all inclusive package - all spirits (international brands), cocktails, beers, wines by the glass and good selection of soft. Bottles of wine were chargeable, but given wine by the glass was included, we didn't understand the purpose to purchasing a bottle. Champagne at breakfast was a great touch, Bar beach service was excellent and staff usually polite and enthusiastic.

Trips - We joined in with the hotel's organised bike tour - we turned up prepared for a good cycle but failed to build up a sweat due to being led to various retail / restaurant establishments. I think the hotel should have been upfront as to the "commerical" nature of this trip. We had fun with the other members of the tour who all saw the funny side of the tour, I was just glad to get back to our beautiful resort for some tasty treats. We went on the Dunns water fall excursion and really enjoyed it - although everyone outside of the resport does seem to want your money. I didn't particularly want a photograph of me in a swimsuit and a pair of ropey looking water shoes - but none the less it was really pushed.

Spa: beautiful - great "pre treament" pools and steam area. Massage was really good and spa therapists excellent.

General comments : excellent hotel, met really lovely people, truely relaxing aided by hard working and eager to please staff. We were really well treated.

“The Best Girlfriend's Get-away Birthday Ever”

This was the most wonderful way to celebrate my birthday. I saw the hotel on the internet after hearing about it from a friend and I did NOT regret for a moment, choosing Secrets to celebrate. The property was awesome, the food was great but what was divine was the service. I felt like the belle of the ball the moment I entered thanks to the entire staff but especially to Billy Love. He went above and beyond to ensure that my friends and I had a great time. He was so friendly and helpful, and his voice, simply beautiful, he serenaded me with the birthday song and made it so easy to enjoy the most of the hotel in the short time by giving us a brief overview of what to try at the hotel. A MUST is the jerk man's chicken on the beach and being a local, this was an authentic Jamaican touch that we loved which all visitors must try. Secrets is the place for unlimited luxury. Thanks Billy! Muah!

Room Tip: The room I was in was on the fourth floor and I had a great view of the beach and the pool. If my ro...
