“Fun for the Whole Family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This was my second stay at Sunset Beach, this time with my entire family ranging in age from 3 to 60 and everyone had a blast.

Check-In
Painless. We arrived just after 6 pm and were greeted by hotel staff with complimentary fruit punch as we exited the shuttle. There was no line up at the front desk so check in went quickly and we were granted our hotel room keys, information package and escorted by the bell hop to our rooms - W124, W211 and W212.

Rooms
Although the package we booked stated we would be located in Sunrise Tower A, we were told we received an upgrade to the block located nearest the waterpark which was great since we were travelling with children ages 3,5 and 12. Room W124 was a ground floor room and included two double beds and a set of bunk beds. W211 and W212 were adjoining rooms on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the grounds and somewhat of a view of the beach/ocean. Rooms were clean, typical resort style rooms. Bathrooms were small and seemed smaller than the one I had last year in Tower B but was fine. Air conditioning in W124 seemed a bit cooler than the other two rooms and when controls were turned down, the room was very musty smelling. Air in W212 didn't seem to be as cool as the other two rooms but compared to no air, has fine. Cleaning staff were there every day and did a wonderful job.

Dining/Bar
Buffet and grill were fabulous. Lots of variety, super friendly staff, no complaints. We also tried the Italian restaurant which was really good and the Asian which again, food was good, staff were really great ;) Ice cream machine was a big hit with the kids (and adults too). I didn't personally go to the bar much but those who did didn't have any complaints. They were always served promptly and with a smile. My 5-year old nephew went to the bar more than I did during our stay, he was introduced to the Sponge Bob and loved them so he kept going up and ordering his own drinks...too cute :)

Entertainment
There was always lots going on during the day for people of all ages from beach volleyball to aquasize, dance lessons, ping pong, pool drinking games, and activities for the kids. Evening entertainment was alright...nothing too overly exciting (compared to other resorts I've stayed at) but at least something. Silver Birds steel drums were AMAZING! LOVED every minute of that night including the traditional song/dance after. Really great!!! The talent night was a great idea too and fun to watch.

Beach/Pools
No complaints here. The water park was lots of fun and this is where we spent most of our time as we had small children with us, although we did spend time at each pool and the beach at some point during our stay. We did save chairs for ourselves every morning, although I think we would have been ok not to as there always seemed to be chairs available, just not always with shade available. Main pool never seemed to be too busy, in the pool itself, but was always busy with sun bathers laying around the pool and of course, different games and such. The swim up bar pools were busy but not overly crowded with people, again not in the pool but busy around the pool with sun bathers. Beach was always busy and lots of fun. There were always lots of chairs available so that was never an issue.

Staff
Staff were all very friendly and went above and beyond to offer great service. Front desk staff were friendly during check in and check out. Staff at the Guest Information Desk were phenomenal...very helpful in booking reservations for the al a cartes and with booking excursions. They also assisted in making arrangements to have a birthday cake available during one of our al a carte nights. Staff at the restaurants were great too. We had one guy that really made a lasting impression (Omar). We met him the first or second day and he was fabulous. It just so happened that we ended up sitting in his section most times (by coincidence). He was always so happy and friendly, chatting with everyone, smiling from ear to ear, joking around with the kids. He would say hi or give a wave to us if we were walking through the resort, just really made us feel welcome. All in all we had no issues with any staff as everyone was great.

Check-Out
Painless. No issues. Staff even called our hotel rooms prior to check out to let us know who to call if we wanted the bell hop to come and get our bags. As check out was at 11 and our shuttle wasn't until 2:30, we were able to leave our bags in the lobby, keep out bracelets until we boarded our shuttle so were still able to use the hotel facilities, eat, drink, swim, etc. We were even able to keep our towel keys until we left so that was a bonus.

Sunset Beach is a great family friendly resort at a great price. I would recommend this resort for anyone looking for a reasonably priced resort. I have been a guest both with a family and with single friends...and had an exceptional time both times :)

This was our 20th anniversary (February 1) the time which we spent at your resort was so comforting and reassuring that life outside of the home is more than comforting.
your Italian(la Bella Vita) was so exquisite. from the service to the food to the entertainment crew especially Renee Dewar, Sasha Benjamin & Yanique Hyman......... they were so fun to be around and also our poolside bartender Alva.
Best time we've had in years......

“Nothing Special Here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This was our first time at an all inclusive resort. I beleive this one is a good place if all you want to do is get away and get some sun in the winter. The room we had was on the second floor with an ocean view and balcony. It was on the rustic side kind of worn with a tube TV
no mini bar or mini refrigerator. The food left a lot to be desired. They have three restaurants which you need to make reservations for. Also have a large buffet dining area, and small walk up snack bar to order a burger, pizza, ect. The dinners in the restaurants are very simalar they just add different spices and call it another name. No variety, and very small portions. One night thay had a BBQ at the buffet which was the worst meal we had. They also closed the restaurants one night and you were forced to go to the buffet which they tried to make like the restaurants by putting table cloths and candles on the tables. They also offer a romantic dinner on the beach for two for an extra $120!!!. The only meal they did fairly well was the breakfast buffet. The entertainment was not that great if you saw one show you saw them all. Not much night life. This resort has a lot for famlies to do.The one bright spot is the staff, they were most accomidating. Always had a plesant smile and a kind word.

“You will be pleasantly surprised by this "3" star resort!”

Great things about this resort:
*The food is great! As as picky eater I will tell you that you will not be disappointed by the selection at the buffet and the restaurants are really good.
*Near to the airport, only a 15 minute drive or so.
*A good size beach with good snorkeling
*Clean rooms
*LOTS of activities/entertainment at all hours of the day
*Overall, VERY friendly staff, and obvious that they have good staff retention as after 3 years of visiting, we consistently see the same faces when we come, which is really nice.
*Great pools for adults and kids
*Great entertainment in the evenings

Not so great things:
*If you get stuck with the wrong room, you won't be happy. The first night my room was over the night club, and I was unable to sleep until after 1am - not fun after travelling all day. Another visit, my room faced the lobby. They are accommodating to move you WHEN there is space. This trip it took 2 days, which means you can't unpack or really get settled. HOWEVER once we were moved, the rooms were great.
*Front desk staff aren't as friendly as the rest of the staff, I can say this from experience as I have been there on 3 different occasions - unfortunate as this is your first point of contact. But don't let this fool you, the rest of the staff are great.
*Common areas need some refreshing, like the pool/beach loungers are in serious need of replacement but they are workable
*The pools could use a little more consistent cleaning
*May want to consider relocating the once a week entertainment on the beach to another area - although nice for those enjoying it, not so nice for those in their rooms trying to sleep, especially when they have children!

Other suggestions for the hotel:
*Play more Caribbean/reggae/soca music at the pools/beach, sets the atmosphere!
*Encourage front desk staff to be a little friendlier, even if they can't accommodate everyone's needs
*Consider the needs/wants of your guests at their arrival to help determine the location of their room. We made it TOTALLY clear on our reservations where we wanted to be at the hotel, and that we needed adjoining rooms. Being repeat visitors, and bringing three families with us on this trip, not one of our requests were accommodated when we arrived. PLEASE NOTE, after the 3rd day, we were put in a perfect room for us, and are very thankful for that.

OVERALL A GREAT RESORT. It's always easier to outline your complaints, but I will tell you that our visit has been great, the atmosphere is friendly, the food is fresh and nicely prepared, and the pools and beach are really good. You won't be disappointed here and we will be coming back.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less noise, and beach wing rooms typically have less noise. Beach wing rooms have...

“A Wonderful Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012
5
people found this review helpful

Let me start by saying i am a bit confused about some of the reviews on this site. This is honestly a 3 to 3.5 star resort. I could tell from the get go that they have higher aspirations, kinda like the old avis commercials: #2 and trying harder. That in mind, i thought this resort met all the needs of its travelers with a few minor exceptions. We just returned from a 7 night stay, 2/4 to 2/11. I will break this review into parts;

The Excellent: MARLENE at the front desk! She truly cares about her guests and it shows. People who have issues with the staff being "cold" or the like do not understand Jamaican culture. You can easily mistake signs of respect as "coldness" if you do not know the culture that you are in. She was accomodating, sweet, and efficient. Everything you waqnt in a front desk person. She even did something special for my wife and i when she found out it was our anniversary. Thank youo so much Marlene. Also a shout out to MICO from the pool bar and of course CLINTON whose fresh omelettes were the highlight of Breakfast every day. Check in on a saturday was a breeze.

The Good: Never a problem getting a drink and the hotel was full when we were there. They serve them in small plastic cups which is the only reason i cant give this peice an excellent rating. Alot of running back and forth to the bar.

Also in the GOOD category was the rooms. The rooms are dated but clean and never once in 7 days saw a bug of any kind. We stayed in tower B oceanfront room, so I cannot comment of the multiple other types of rooms available that are not in the towers. Nothing special. A king size bed, bathroom with tub/shower and a TV. Basic but clean. the doors are a bit troublesome as they slam but bearable. the locks were a little loose on our room as well. The one suggestion I would make is to move something around so the bed is not right under the air conditioner. I beleive that is what caused me to catch a "Jamaican Cold". The lobby area was very inviting. As for the wi-fi I suggest the 7-day unlimited wi-fi for 30 bucks. The pool areas were nice, the lazy river relaxing and the water park was great for kids. I will say the pools in front of tower B were extremely cold, suprising as both pools are in the hot jamaican sun most of the day. I surmised that there must be leaks in the pool and they keep getting fresh new water everyday cause I couold not honestly explain why they were so cold. i live in upstate new york, have a pool, no heater and my pool is never that cold. Also in the GOOD category was the buffet Breakfast, lunches and dinner. They seemd to mix it up a bit on a daily basis and it fit our needs. they grow their own vegetables so they are always fresh and good.

The Average: The beach. not as big as i'm used to like in Myrtle Beach however the water is georgeaous and the scenery better. Not really a swimmers beach unless you like to snorkel which we do not. You get About 15 yards out into the water for swimming then after that there is seaweed growth or other plant life that is not pleasurable to walk on. You get waist height and thats it. Good enough for our needs but nothing like the beaches in negril if you want to take the 90 minute ride there after a long flight.

The not-so-good - The lounge chairs by the pool and beach are simply uncomfortable and are due for upgrading. I suggest pads for the chairs or at least re-do them all with the current liners on them. The italian reservations only resteraunt. Portions are tiny and the food was not good. Steak had no seasoning whatsoever and was cooked barely enough to eat. raw comes to mind. Because of that experience we did not book any other of the reservation only eateries. In fact after the italian resteraunt we went to the buffet as we were starving. Also there are some, few, but some bad rooms to get in both towers. The towers were built with 10 floors each. Later they added the enclosed lobby area which includes the 1st floor of each tower essentially giving at least 4 rooms on the first floor balcony views of the lobby which gets quite noisy and nothing to look at. Trust me you dont want those rooms.

The Bad: I cannot say anthing was truly bad, however this is a family resort and as such some things were lacking. ICE CREAM!?!?!? They had a soft serve station that always had chocolate but never seemed to have vanilla. It was only open from noon to 4pm and even then not much care to make sure it was working was given by the staff. Ice Cream and cookies is a staple for young ones and they were very very short on both. I would say it was a refrigeration issue however they had a large stock of ice cream products in their store for 2 bucks a pop so i am at a loss as to why ice cream was not offered at lunch or dinner buffets. Nothing more satisfying than a nice soft serve on a hot day, especially for the kids.

Overall this was a wonderful place to stay as 3 to 3.5 star locations go this was great. And i think with a little care and upgrading they could get ot 4 star status. I truly reccommend the sunset for a reasonably priced beautiful place to stay. And only 15 minutes to the airport in montego bay. We will be back.

Chris & Teshia

Room Tip: Tower B anyhting above 1st floor. Ocean front is best but Ocean view is nice too.
