I'll just start by saying I went to this hotel in June 2010 so this review might be slightly outdated...
However I'll give my honest feedback nonetheless...
The hotel:
When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with cocktails whilst we waited for our buggy which took us and our suitcases to the hotel. We tipped the porter boy who was excellent. We had a view of the green hotel grounds from our balcony which was pretty enough. The room we stayed in was in a sort of apartment block, which was nice because the little apartments were spread out over the hotel so it was quiet and peaceful. The grounds are beautiful, very green and so clean! The staff are extremely friendly! There were 3 pools, one which was in a much more quiet location and had a wave pool and then a big slide for the kids (which we all enjoyed using too haha) Each pool had its own pool bar where the staff were lovely, and the cocktails were AMAZING. There was a 24 hour pool bar upstairs which was very handy indeed. and they served sandwichs for us when we came back from nights out lol. This hotel is PERFECT for families, even though we were a group of friends, the hotel is packed with families and the kids club was so good, the staff knew all the kids names by heart and really worked hard to make sure the kids were looked after always. The entertainment was good, something every night!
The room:
It was airy and spacious and the maid came everyday ...I don't think she changed our sheets everyday though...and we did have a problem with ants, but that didn't bother us much as we didn't spend much time in our room. There was enough storage space for the three of us,,,bearing in mind we were young females with loads of shoes and clothes LOL. Our safe worked perfectly fine and we used it throughout our stay.
Food:
There was a lot of options, I remember there being three restaurants, the main restaurant which was buffet style and then the other 2 which were a la carte and you had to book to go to them, which I think was restricted to about twice a week for each. It was nice going to the caribbean restaurant which is right on the private beach. The main restaurant was average, with a fair mix of food, something to suit everyone. There was also a restaurant by the main swimming pool which seemed to be open 24 hours a day or at least until very late say about 3-4am serving chips, pizza etc
The beach:
The hotel was right on the beach and had a little pathway from the pool which led straight onto the beach. Sun loungers were free. Restaurant and bar on the beach. Was beautiful. They also throw beach parties now and then.
The area/Things to do:
Puerto plata is a small resort with not much there apart from a hard rock cafe, a nightclub and a few shops. Its best to do the excursions and get out, explore DR! We went horseriding through the mountains which was amazing, we got to make our own cigars and they had a little bbq of their native food at the top of the mountains. It was great to see how the natives lived on the mountains, their little houses were beautiful. This was a trip that will stay with me for life. You also get to buy the tradtional DR rum.
You should also try to do the white water rafting, and any other trips if possible! We went out to Caberete one night which is buzzing! The beach is BEAUTIFUL and at night they have awesome parties.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!!
