“Great Holiday, thanks!”

Just returned from a great two week break at Bluebay feeling relaxed and ready to return to normality! The size of the hotel is a real plus, small and friendly is how i would describe it and the lack of children made it even better! Entertainment staff were unbeatable, you could involve yourself or simply relax ... No pressure, your choice, all were made to feel welcome. Special note to 'James Bond', what a star... However I have to add, i am sure that if you lived in the UK mental health services would probably enjoy working with you! Only criticism for us was the pressure to sell the 'vacation club' ... After being led by 'let me show you a VIP room' to 'I will speak to my manager to see if I can release you' when we said we weren't interested in the vacation club still annoys me a tad, yes we were stupid to enter in the first place but are nosy and wanted to see what else the hotel had to offer. Suggestion from us is place more information about the 'vacation club' in the rooms and then ask the question ' have you read the information in the rooms, do you have any questions and then ask are you interested in finding out more' not grab people and try the hard sell!. To end on a real positive the staff across the hotel made our visit perfect, from the housekeeping staff, to the hard working buffet staff (special praise to Rafael) and to the security guy on the beach providing us with sun lounges as soon as we arrived on the beach, everyone we met could not do enough for us. We will be recommending the resort to our friends and family, thank you!

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Stayed here as a couple but only for a week in December. We couldnt fault the food in either the buffet or the a la carte restaurants, the caesar salad was yummy. Staff and service too were very good. The weather wasnt what we'd expected and it rained for 75% of the week but thats not the hotel's fault. The beach sellers were a bit persistant but I felt sorry for them trying to make a living all the same. The only fault I found was not enough seating for the nightime entertainment. Some of the guests were a little 'loud', one (Mrs Nesbitt we called her) you could hear from one end of the restaurant to the other. I would recommend this hotel and revisit as the adults only aspect is a huge bonus.

There was never a dull moment at Bluebay! George, Mayo, and Comando from the activities crew were friendly, high spirited, and oooh boy can they dance!!! The quaint atmosphere allows you to trully feel like family; from the breakfast buffet to the midnight bar everyone is eager to visit for a few minutes and still provide top noch service. This was absolutely a vacation to remember.

“Sometime memories should not be revisited.”

This used to be my wife and my favorite resort, now its' just a nice resort.
The food is very good, the bars staff are always friendly and the animation teams keep an active program going almost all the time, but don't harass you if you just want to relax by the pool.
We made it to the steak and the seafood restaurants and were impressed by the food, however there is an extra cost for most of the premium dishes.
We found the beds very very hard one of our pillows had a foul aroma, we only had one stool for seating in our room and no where for luggage.
The last time we were there internet was free now $9 an hour for poor connection, but a short walk down the street has internet cafe where it is free.
We were able to avoid the yellow shirts(blue bays time share salesmen) which can be very annoying.
We also used the offsite taxis as they were half the cost of the ones on site providing the same service.
When looking over the new and old pictures we have taken the hotel does look more tired now.
This was our second time there and we saw some old familiar faces and had a great time, but sometimes old memories are better.

Room Tip: Depending on what you like ... above 4000 quieter and below more party like for room numbers.

“hard to seriously criticise - but hard to praise too”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

To be fair, my wife and I struggled to identify what was lacking at BlueBay. It's probably that it is so average in almost everything that makes it hard to review.

Our biggest dislike was receiving drinks in floppy white plastic cups, like those from vending machines. This is at all times and at all bars. We understand safety issues around the pools, but they also have some clear plastic 'glasses' that are preferable but rarely available. The policy is not even consistent because on very rare occasions we were served with 'proper' glasses even next to the pools.

Our next dislike was being persued by the hotel's own timeshare sales staff. The management really need to understand people don't want to be propositioned and badgered on holiday. We actually had to alter our routes to avoid being pestered.

The food was good - plenty of choice and good quality- with omlette, pasta, and smoothie stations to get custom-made treats. BUT you generally have to queue to get into the buffet restaurant! The a la carte restaurants were good in our experience, although the Chinese restaurant got a lot of criticism from other guests.

Cleanliness in the rooms, public areas and loos was also good. The rooms were adequate. Water pressure was poor to non-existent at times, meaning showers were fairly hopeless, and there are no baths. TV reception was poor on old, small sets.

The main pool areas were 'lively' or 'noisy' depending on your point of view - we tended to avoid them in preference to the beach which was good. There are parasols that are reserved early on (we were told it was like the M6 in a morning with folk grabbing the best spots) but if you are happy to be unshaded we always got loungers and plenty of space. The beach is reasonably clean given the numbers using it, although the sea is rather cloudy and occasionally dirty with floating litter. The beach vendors are numerous but they do not pester you if you politely decline. They also lend a bit of local colour and interest.

There is also a pleasant Spa pool area which is quieter, but limited to about 25 people and, again, 'reserved' from the early hours.

Some staff were helpful, friendly and cheerful - mainly restaurant and domestic staff - whilst others were glum but dutiful - bars and reception. Tipping is expected, despite what the tour reps may say. $2 is regarded as a decent tip apparently. If you don't tip, expect to be at the back of the queue!

A lot of the clientelle are from Canada with quite a few Brits and a small number of Germans. It's an all adult resort which we liked, but some guests get out of line with drink and can be quite loud and offensive.

It was our first time in the DR. We liked the green landscape and beaches and the warm sunny weather (we had a fair amount of heavy rain though). We are not sure whether we would go again - if so we'd look for a better standard of hotel.

Room Tip: Blocks 7 and 8 are quieter
