“Great experience”

This was my first time to dominican, i've been to varadero 3x, cancun 1x , this was my first time in the Dominican republic. I've been to Barcelo Solymar before in varadero so was hoping i would have a decent time here too...

It was 5 guys 5 girls on this trip, all between 24-27 years of age. We went February 2 - 9, and i was thinking the resort might be empty because it was a random time to go, however it was pretty friggen packed (which i like)

The resort itself is pretty beautiful, i love that it is lit up at night so you can actually see where you are going (lot of nature and tress everywhere)
We were club prestige, so we got the rooms right by the beach, and infront of the pool, which was very worth it.
We had a couple of problems with the rooms, one of our friends locks was screwed up so they could not get in their room at all, they had to be switched to a far room for the night. And 2 other rooms which were supposed to be triple occupancy, had only 2 beds in it.. So we slept a night with just 2 beds (and 3 people).. but a full bed was delivered next day.

Food was decent, didn't get around to trying the a la carte's. Buffet always had something you would like. We mostly loved the pizzeria up the stairs, with the calezones and pizzas (they made them so fast!)
I wasnt too happy with the burgers at the resort, they put some seeds in it (kim?) seemed like a lot of people didn't enjoy that.

Was disappointed that there was no 24/hour snack bar...everything pretty much shuts off at 2.. Then we usually carried the party over to coco bongo

Every night there was lot of young people partying at the outside disco we had, which was good.

We did two excursion through martin on the beach, hes a great guy. Paradise island, and dune buggys.. Both were great, and dune buggys had its ups and downs, but overall really fun experience (make sure you get the goggles if you go, i didn't and drove with my contacts in, when i got back to the resort had to empty my eyes out full of dirt!)

Beach was PACKED, so many chairs yet all are taken... Beach itself and water are not near as beautiful as varadero though...

I would recommend the resort, its not perfect but it was a decent resort, and i had a ton of fun still

Room Tip: By the beach, get the prestige for a bit extra.

“Nice vacation”

Choosingto fly Can Jet-select was the best decision. Service was excellent.
This was our second stay at Bacelo resort. Not much have changed from the first stay; rooms are clean but dated. Beach is very nice, we were in the water every day, although afternoon gets very windy but water stays warm. Pool is old and clean but small for the size of resort /over 580 rooms/.There are never enough lawn chairs and not enough room to put more. People start reserving them as early as six's a clock in the morning and leter even at eleven at the evening /after the show/. Entertaining crew work very hard all day. Some evening shows are very good as is live band and two great singers.
Food is good in the bufett restaurant; a lot of fresh vegetables, fruit , meat...my only concern is beef- always dry andhard to chew. Dining room is beautiful, serving staff is very efficient and friendly, deserved every dollar tipped.
Overall great and grand place to spend your vacation. We are certainly planning to go back!

“Great Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed at the Barcelo the week of January 29/12. The staff, especially entertainment, were great. They were always there to help you and made the trip very enjoyable.

We upgraded to the premium club the first day we were there. If you have the chance well worth the money..No line ups for food, they go above and beyond to get you what you ask for.
The pool was great and the travellers were very friendly. On the weekend, some Dominicans came to the resort, but they were pleasant and very friendly and did not "take" over the resort as some has stated. We enjoyed the Mexican a la carte restaurant the best and the pizza is fabulous. We did do one trip 1/2 day to Puerto Plata - other than going up the mountain in the cable car, not worth the money. Great trip and we will go back.

“Shake-It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

My boyfriend and I went to Barcelo Puerto Plata at the end of January 2012. The first night we checked in we had to stay in a room with two beds, we had asked for one king and the second night they gave us an amazing suite for the rest of the week. We talked to a lot of people that still loved their room, they pushed the two beds together which works. Breakfast is early its from 7-10 everyday, which actually works because you need to be by the pool by 7am at the latest to save a chair.
Next, we headed to the beach. We had read a lot about booking with "Felix" so right about we looked for him. The reviews we had read were right. He hooked us up with a great price. We did the Super Buggies and the Jeep Safari, I would highly recommend both of them if you really want to see what Puerto Plata is like. So do not forget his name, Felix. Make sure you book with him.
The A La Carte Restaurants were all fantastic. Try to make as many reservations as you can, you are aloud to make them up to two days in advance but they are difficult to get so do so as soon as possible.
We had a late departure flight, and we were unable to get a late check out time (1:00 latest) so they keep your luggage for you in a safe spot, locked up so you can still have a day in the sun.
Overall, Barcelo was a great resort. The workers were hilarious, you should be prepared to shake everything not at your own will. The vendors at the beach are kind of a pain, but you just have to tell them "no" or pretend you're sleeping. Unless of course you are interested in what they have to offer, you can get anything for a good price.
Bon Voyage!

Room Tip: Try to get the King Bed room with the separate living room, dining table, bathroom and walk in close...

“Goce mucho con los locales...pero el hotel no fue el mejor”

My boyfriend and I went to Barcelo the beginning of December 2011 for four days. I expected the entertainment to be more lively once we got into the hotel, but it was extremely quiet. The food at the buffets didn't have much flavor, but the Brazilian and Mexican restaurants had the best food.

On the weekends, the locals come to the resort which makes more entertaining. Since my boyfriend is Dominican he automatically bonded with the staff and locals. We probably spent most of time with the entertainment crew watching them rehearse...or dancing with them. They made our trip memorable.

Overall, we made the best of our trip because of outing personalities. Have we been to better resorts before? Of course! I wouldn't recommend this hotel, but we enjoyed ourselves.
