I stayed for 2 nights as part of a 2-week independent tour of Cuba. First I didn't even want to go to Varadero as it is an artificial and little authentic tourist resort but then followed a friend to stay only a short while.
We chose this budget hotel which was fit for purpose but very basic amenities. The room was reasonably clean, the bathroom and the airconditioner were working. The staff were helpful. We arrived at low season so I suspect the hotel wasn't full - at least I never saw crowds sitting at the outside bar. At breakfast we ate the fruit but the toast was practically inedible so on the second morning we didn't even ask for it. The location is great, the beach is a 5-minute walk, and around the hotel there are plenty of restaurants both state-run and also private (paladars).
For the low season price of 30 CUC per night it was fit for our purpose. Not sure how it might compare to other locations in Varadero however as I never stayed in the resort hotels.
