“safety in cuba”

Having been to Cuba 5 times, the latest from Nov. 16th to Nov. 30th 2011, i am always asked how safe is Cuba. I have only been to Havana once, and that was the first time i was there, and it was on a bus tour, and it was very safe on the tour. So i really can't say how safe Havana is, But the resorts are very safe. I always stay at the same resort, and that being the Sol Serinas Coral Resort. There i found it to be very safe, and the 5 times that i have been there, i encourted nothing that wasn't unsafe. Also went to Varadero to do some souvenier shopping, and not once was i felt unsafe. I took a bus from the Resort, and for 5 convertable pesos they give you a pice of paper, and you can get off and on, and ride all day, and they will tell you where to get off, for all the souveniers. On the second week i misplaced my camera, and i wasn't sure where i left it. The last being the gift shop in the resort. I went there and it was closed, so i just waited til it opened in the morning. They know me pretty well having been there 5 times, and sure enough they had my camera. I gave her a tip for her honesty, and it was a lot of money to her, but not compared to what my camera cost. They know a lot of tourists by their first name, and mine being Paul, they call me Pablo. I was treated there like family, from the waiters and waitresses, bellhops, desk staff, maids who did my room, the service was awsome. So go to Cuba, have fun, and respect the Cuban people, and i guarantee you will have a wonderfull time, and the drinks are great, and you will be safe, and have nothing to worry about. I will be going back again for the 6th time again soon.

Room Tip: Stayed on the Sirennas side, and the room was excellent, and that side is more quiet, and going solo...

“Sol Sirenis Coral Resort - TRULY ALL AROUND AMAZING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I must say that this is one of the nicest resorts I have ever been to. We arrived early in the morning, and had to wait until check in at 4pm. Our itinerary stated that we could check in at 3, but that was not the case. There were bellmans there at the door ready and waiting to help us with our luggage as well as Customer Service Staff ready to answer any questions we had. The customer service ladies were truly amazing, polite and helpful. We were able to change in the beautiful front lobby washrooms, and start enjoying our day immediately. The resort is absolutely beautiful. Very, very clean and well kept. There are ashtray stands everywhere which makes it really nice for people that dont like looking at them on the grounds. It also makes it easier for people who have been drinking too much to find a place to put their butts..lol. The pools are absolutely astonishing!!!!! there are really nice pool bars and great scenery throughout.
Our room was absolutely gorgeous! We were so impressed. Our sheets and towels were very clean as well. Everyday, our maid exchanged our towels, and gave us extra when we needed. We left her gifts and a note each morning. There are two parts to the resort per say, 1 side is the Coral and 1 side is the Sirenis. We stayed on the Coral side, and is definitely the better side to be on if you want to have a truly amazing experience.
The entertainment was just wonderful. The shows were amazing!!!!! The costumes, the danicng, the music and the choreography was extremely impressive. The so called professional dancers, were actually less entertaining than the resort staff dancers. However, their shows were still entertaining. We got the luxury of meeting these wonderful people. All cubans seem to be wonderful people, all the resort staff, servers, maids, gardeners, were all very nice - BUT - the entertainment staff is who really made our experience extra special. We wanted to take the staff memebers we clicked with to dinner with us, but had to ask the entertainment manager for permission. Personally, I know why these rules are in place but i dont agree with it. I think we as guests, should be able to invite those special people to dine with us. Obviously we are on vacation and forming long lasting friendships and it is very unfair that we cant eat with them. This would actually be a good time for us to ask them about their families and lives, etc. While they are working when we see them, we dont have enough time to get too personal. This trip particularly, we were able to take 1 lady out 3 times, which she truly appreciated. However, we would have loved to take others with us. :( ... nonetheless, it didnt put a damper on our trip. They work so hard and are always smiling. They will bend over backwards for you, or in most case give you the shirt off their back. They deserve much more, so a great way to thank them is by taking them to dinner at least!
I will be downloading some videos and pictures I took of their shows to validate my claims.
The beachfront is extremely clean, and their are fun activities going on everyday. Once again, it is THE ENTERTAINMENT STAFF who are making this possible. 1 of the nicest things about them is they really do remember your names. Im personally terrible with names, but it is so nice when people remember.
There were a few hiccups with the resort, but nothing that took away from our trip. Antyime there was a problem it was resolved right away. In our case, we were given extra things, just to make it better for us. That was even better. It was a very very very safe place to walk around at night, there were always many staff memebers around looking out for you. There was alot of moquitoes at night, so i wouldnt suggest wearing perfume when you go out to dinner..lol.. (my bad).
The food in the restaurants was good, well for cuba anyway. Everything is very very bland! So when i go next time, im going to bring my own salt, pepper and spices. Their pepper is almost white, and their salt is very hard to shake out. I forgot to mention to the managers to put rice in their shakers to absorb the humidity like we do at home. 1 tip I want to fill everyone in on is that on the Coral side, by the big deep swimming pool is a path to the beach. There is a bbq restaurant there that is included but not a la carte. It is definitely the best place to eat lunch, however it took us 3 days to find out we could eat there!
The positives definitely outweighed the very few negatives, and we had an amazing time! I will always go back there to vacation as it is just awesome. i will tell all my friends and bring my families.
I should note that I have been to Mexico many times, Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua, St Maarten, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Florida and have taken cruises. THIS WAS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE PLACE SO FAR.
it is very family friendly resort while having the young adults hopping all day as well. The older crowds are always having a blast and if they are not into that, they head on over to the Sirenis side where it seems to be more solitude.
Again, definitely well worth the money.
Feel free to contact me with any questions, as I am a traveller and have alot more information to share on this resort. cjello69@hotmail.com.

“Good Time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This was our second stay at this resort . The first time was nine years ago and things haven't changed too much . The beach is perfect and the grounds are well kept . We stayed at the Coral side on the third floor (2108) . The room was dated with a few imperfections but the AC worked and the plumbing functioned fine . It was clean but showed some age . We don't go to Cuba to hang out in the room , so no real problems .

If you go I suggest taking some time and wandering around both sides . There are lots of quiet places to enjoy a drink or lively spots to join a party
.
The food was quite good at the buffets , but the real gem was the Cuban grill at supper every night. It is somewhere between a buffet and an a la carte . You don't need to make a reservation - just show up . It is located in the spot where the lunch beach buffet is . Look for the pig roasting on a spit .

The staff were all friendly and helpful with or without tipping . It is a nice solid 3.5 star resort . If you need new and shiny this might not be the right fit for you . I would go back without hesitation.

“Awesome vacation for a tight budget!”

My boyfriend and I went to Sol Sirenas Coral resort knowing it was a 3.5 star but we loved it!

Room - cleaned every day by a very friendly maid, plenty of bottled water and toiletries, water pressure in the shower was good and water was very hot! We were in the coral section right above the pool, room 1114. It was not loud at all, perfect location for us - although note we weren't there in the peak season!

Food - we liked it but we aren't too picky! Not a whole lot of fruits and vegetables but some good choices. We went out for dinner in Varadero one night to Barbacoa and it was amazing! (steak and lobster). Drinks were delicious, special thanks to Enrique at the coral lobby bar who made us some amazing cocktails (ask for a paradise or a swimming pool)

Beach - absolutely gorgeous! Cleaned every morning, gorgeous sunsets and clear blue water! Lots of beach chairs for everyone and not too crowded.

Excursions - we booked two excursions through Sunwing. The one day trip to Havana and the Jeep Safari Yumuri. Both were fantastic and highly recommended. Havana was very interesting and a beautiful city to visit. Our tour group was small (about 8 of us) and we stopped on the way for fresh pina coladas. Tour of the Havana Club museum, Ernest Hemingway's favourite places and so much more. The included lunch was good and very scenic, overlooking the water. Lots of free time to shop in the market. The Jeep Safari was my favourite. The snorkeling was the best part of the trip in my opinion! So many beautiful fish in a gorgeous coral reef. The ride to the ranch was a bit intense (it's a drive yourself-manual transmission Jimney) so make sure at least one person in your party of four can drive! But it was absolutely gorgeous, and we ended the tour with a boat ride in Matanzas. So much fun!

Location - Sol Sirenas Coral is in a great location, we walked to downtown Varadero about four times and it does not take long at all. We both felt totally safe as everyone was so nice. There was horseback riding across the street which we also did and that was a lot of fun. Overall it was a wonderful vacation seeing a beautiful country and meeting some amazing people!

Any questions do not hesitate to ask me!!! :)

My wife was here in September with girl friends and enjoyed it so much that we came back for this trip. My first time in Cuba. Our room was quite old and could use an upgrade but it was very clean and everything worked. We had heard negative comments about the food. We both enjoyed all our meals and in particular the BBQ buffet. The beach and ocean are beautiful. We found ALL staff that we dealt with to be very friendly, accommodating and many went well out of their way to please us. We will be back

Room Tip: Higher room was nice but not all buildings have elevators.
