“Excellent Choice for bicyclists and great views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

This hotel is in a beautiful old building with ground floor marble terrasse that overlooks the central plaza (Parque Cespedes). Depending on the day, you may get breakfast buffet or 'to order' and both were excellent for ever hungry bicyclists like us. We stayed two nights thinking this place may be noisy all night long but were pleasantly surprized at the relatively quiet nights (even with a room on the second floor facing the plaza - new double pane windows do the trick). Music and entertainment are during most afternoons and earlier evenings ('til ~9 pm or so) on and around the plaza. The views from the roof terrace are fantastic and lunch and drinks are also available here. I fully agree with "rarereviewerEssexUK", don't go overboard with your expectations - this is a very nice Cuban hotel with minor flaws that are easily made up by friendly staff, ambiente and location. We were allowed to carry our bikes up the stairs into our room, and the room was large and comfy, even with bikes. We couldn't care less about a non working elevator.

Room Tip: Bicycles are allowed in the room - and they accommodated us by giving us a room on the second floor...

“Best place to stay in Santiago”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

The hotel is by Santiago's main square, Cespedes. A ground floor terrace overlooks the square and makes a lovely place to have breakfast, or listen to the daily excellent live music in the afternoon. Roof Terrace has 360 degree views - good for a sunset drink. The rooms we had all varied. 404/405 and the same on 2nd and 3rd floors also overlook the square. OK the lift didn't work (they are building a new one), some of the showers were a bit dribbly, and the toilet seat fell off. But this is a Cuban hotel, run by the government and just don't apply unrealistic expectations. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable. This is a poor country with brilliant people, music and weather. Nest door is Casa de la Trova. The best music in Cuba. 4-7pm its 1 CUC (1.5 CUC = £1). 10pm to 1am its about 5CUC. Yes the tourists go there, but so to do the local Salsa dancers. Round the corner are some quirky museums- try the Carnival Museum. Food at the hotel - breakfast well sort of OK - ask for coffee from the espresso machine. Eat out at the nearby Paladar (private restaurants). The hotel people will walk you round. Lobster is very cheap and very good.

Room Tip: ask for a view over the square. top rooms look further towards the port

“Okay hotel”

We spent a night here in August as part of a trip, found it to be clean and felt safe. Rooms were okay, a bit dark and hot. Breakfast was acceptable, as was the evening meal and staff were freindly. Overall an okay stay.

“¿ a donde vas, Casa Granda?”

I've been here before and liked the ambient and hotel. Last month I stayed here again for a couple of days. The rooftop terrace and lobby bar at the first level are places worth visiting.

The hotel itself was disappointing considering the price to be paid. The elevator was (once again) the whole week out of order. With our room on the fourth floor this was rather a disappointment. But technology can suddenly let you down. The breakfast however was a disenchantment: one slice of toast, one slice of cheese and bacon and an egg. With a cup of coffee. That's it.

Regarding the price: 112 CUC/night/room, including breakfast, you'll find better and cheaper in the neighborhood. Look at the other hotels listed on tripadvisor. You can also book in advance on the internet and get cheaper prices. So I have paid only 52 €/room the first few days. At his price the hotel in fact becomes a bargain. But on site I have paid 140 CUC for the same 2 adults and one child for a (standard) room with two standard beds (for the three of us). From being rather enthousiastic on this hotel two years ago, I feel now rather dissilusioned.

If you like the noises of the city, take a front room at the fourth level. You need more quiescence? Consider the romantic room 415. Or one of the others that give out at the center court. But to my overall opinion the rooms are in need for renovation and the breakfast has te be upgraded.

“Great views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

As our other reservation was at a non-existent hotel, we turned up here and stayed several nights in a junior suite. We were on the third floor and had a corner room with a lovely view over Santiago. Cost at 115 pesos is not too bad and the room is a good size but the hotel is definitely not four star. When it rains the roof in some areas (not in the rooms) leaks profusely. The rooms are quite ok, good size bathroom although a bit "used" looking. Don't expect western standards but generally nothing to complain about. Most importantly, the air conditioning works! The restaurant/bar area is a lovely place to sit and look over the town square.

Room Tip: Junior suites have a great view and are a good size.
