“¿ a donde vas, Casa Granda?”

I've been here before and liked the ambient and hotel. Last month I stayed here again for a couple of days. The rooftop terrace and lobby bar at the first level are places worth visiting.

The hotel itself was disappointing considering the price to be paid. The elevator was (once again) the whole week out of order. With our room on the fourth floor this was rather a disappointment. But technology can suddenly let you down. The breakfast however was a disenchantment: one slice of toast, one slice of cheese and bacon and an egg. With a cup of coffee. That's it.

Regarding the price: 112 CUC/night/room, including breakfast, you'll find better and cheaper in the neighborhood. Look at the other hotels listed on tripadvisor. You can also book in advance on the internet and get cheaper prices. So I have paid only 52 €/room the first few days. At his price the hotel in fact becomes a bargain. But on site I have paid 140 CUC for the same 2 adults and one child for a (standard) room with two standard beds (for the three of us). From being rather enthousiastic on this hotel two years ago, I feel now rather dissilusioned.

If you like the noises of the city, take a front room at the fourth level. You need more quiescence? Consider the romantic room 415. Or one of the others that give out at the center court. But to my overall opinion the rooms are in need for renovation and the breakfast has te be upgraded.

“Great views”

As our other reservation was at a non-existent hotel, we turned up here and stayed several nights in a junior suite. We were on the third floor and had a corner room with a lovely view over Santiago. Cost at 115 pesos is not too bad and the room is a good size but the hotel is definitely not four star. When it rains the roof in some areas (not in the rooms) leaks profusely. The rooms are quite ok, good size bathroom although a bit "used" looking. Don't expect western standards but generally nothing to complain about. Most importantly, the air conditioning works! The restaurant/bar area is a lovely place to sit and look over the town square.

Room Tip: Junior suites have a great view and are a good size.

“Great Location and pleasant surroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

I chose to stay here after an unusually poor experience at a grim Casa Particular in Santiago. Suddenly I wanted luxury and prime location. The bathrooms in the rooms that I looked at and the one that I stayed at could use a really good scrubbing in the grout, but otherwise they were clean and comfortable, and the service very good. I loved that my room overlooked the Parque Cespedes and I could hear live music day and evening, and the view was gorgeous. I thought it was well priced. However, I thought that the breakfast was very poor being included in the price of the room. There were no eggs and no bread and the servings were small. However, the Cuban espresso was excellent as usual. The service in all areas was pleasant and good. I really think that this hotel should have a restaurant, the lower and upper terraces could really benefit from more than just a sandwich menu. All in all I enjoyed my stay here and would stay again.

“A very good place to be”

Reading the latest reviews about this hotel just before heading of to Cuba our expectations were rather low, but this turned out to be wrong. The staff was very friendly and helpful, our room was comfortable and clean. One night we had a simple meal downstairs on the terrace, which was much cheaper and better than the one at a paladar we had the day before. Only with regards to the breakfast we had the same experience as other visitors: it is not good indeed, but this is compensated by the location on the roof top terrace.

“Wrong choice - avoid it!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2011

We were sooooo disappointed with this hotel, I don't know where to begin from! The only good thing is the location, BUT it is not worth it.
The hotel from the outside is beautiful and if it was maintained properly it would be worthwhile.
However, it is dirty, the corridors were uncleaned in the corners for ages, gum remains were stuck in the floors - in our room too.
In the room, in the bathtub we also found hair. The room was noisy - even while it was one of the inside ones.
The elevator was out of function for the three days we stayed there and we had a room in the 4th floor. The famous roof top restaurant was closed - probably because the elevator didn't work.
We arrived at about 20.30 and after visiting our room we tried to find somewhere to eat - nothing! The hotel said the restaurant was closed - before 22.00 and were not able to prepare even a sandwich or a toast for us! And around the neighbourhood we couldn't find anything, just some people telling us to go to their houses to eat...
In the next morning, the breakfasta was served in the bar-cafeteria at the plaza level - good place to drink a coffee watching people go by - and although there was variety, we were SO DISGUSTED because the food was not covered and there were lots of flies everywhere, touching the food. I was so hungry because we hadn't managed to eat the previous night and so I tried to pick from the baskets the food that was not so exposed and had been missed by the flies.
Terrible....
The only good thing I can mention is the prices - we had a snack for lunch and the band playing then, and also the girl working in the bar-cafeteria in the mornings and the barman at night which were both friendly and helpful. The other staff was not friendly, they seem really bored and lazy.
I would NEVER go back there, and for that matter, I would not go to Santiago De Cuba again too, maybe only for a night stop-over for Baracoa...
