A room with flea and the host is rude
My first night at Casa Lily, I thought I was bitten by mosquitoes. The second night I was quite badly bitten and I requested for a thorough spray of the room. The third night I was eaten alive. I turned on the light and discovered flea in the bed! I waited till the morning to tell the host. Instead of apologizing, the guy was very rude and said, “This has never happened here. You should go see a doctor and find out why this has happened to you!”. I felt really insulted. I believe the problem was the blanket, which according to the lady, hadn’t been used since last winter. It wasn’t cold but the windows in the room didn’t close properly and the traffic was very noisy. So I turned on the air con and asked for an extra blanket. Somehow aircon noise is better than traffic noise!
I moved down the road to the President Hotel (asked for corner room facing the pool) and had a great sleep that night. My venture to a casa has obviously failed. Casa Lily has a great view, but there isn’t much hospitality to speak of. It sounds exotic to stay with a Cuban family, but it was actually very cold and commercial. Another US couple confirmed with the host they would arrive at 1am. The host just overslept and missed the door bell. The poor couple had to look for a hotel room with their luggage in the middle of the night. I am sure there are much nice hosts in Havana. I am just unlucky and the flea bites were painful and itchy for weeks!
Before my stay in Casa Lily, I stayed at Parc Central Hotel. It was a spacious, beautiful junior suite and the service is excellent. In Trinidad, I stayed at Iberostar Hotel, which is gorgeous and the junior suite is also spacious and beautiful (nice bar in the lobby). I found that in Cuban hotels, it’s worth upgrading to a suite as the rate isn’t much higher.
