It was our second trip to Barbados, and I can honestly say, the island is still one of our favorite among other Caribbean islands we have been to. We stayed at the Butterfly Beach hotel for 7 days, first week of November 2011. The location was good, it’s approximately 15 min from/to the airport (US $30), 10 min taxi ride to St. Lawrence Gap where shopping and dining area is located (US $5 by taxi). The hotel itself is very clean, but needs some renovation, hotel staff is very polite and do their best to keep their guests happy. Can’t say the same about the only restaurant on the premises, the waiters and barmen had “don’t care attitude”, the food was bad and pricey, their menu was very limited, and that was a reason why we had to go out for lunch and dinner every day. Check-in was fast, we got a room on the 3rd floor overlooking the island with some partial sea view, but were very surprised to find out that the window had no glass, it had build- in blinds, needless to say, even though AC worked well, there was no difference in temperature between outside and inside. Moreover, next morning we were awakened around 5 am by noisy birds, chirping on the nearby trees. We had to go down stairs and ask to change our room. The hotel manager was very attentive to our needs and gave us 1 bedroom suite on a top floor! She also welcomed and congratulated us on behalf of the Butterfly Beach hotel with a bottle of champagne (we celebrated our wedding anniversary that day). It was very nice. We liked the room, since there were 2 rooms, including living room, kitchenette and a big balcony, our bedroom where the AC unit located, was always cool and quiet. Wi-Fi only worked in the lobby and restaurant area.
Pool: was nice and clean, although we didn’t spend any time there, but there were many people with kids, who seemed to be happy.
Beach: we both prefer to stay at the beach when we go to the islands. Besides, Barbados is famous with its beautiful pristine white sandy beaches and warm turquoise waters! Unfortunately, I was very disappointed this time. There were two beaches on both sides of the hotel: one on the left doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned (it can barely fit 2 people, no kidding). The other beach on a right hand side was a bit bigger; there were exactly 8 sun beds for those who get to the beach first. The beach was wonderful though, but there was another nearby hotel “Sea breeze” and we were not allowed to cross the line and stay at their territory. So, basically, we spent time on that tiny beach.
Entertainment and food: the hotel was very quiet, there was nothing going on during the day or night. If you want to have a good time, take a taxi to St. Lawrence Gap, where you can have a nice dinner, walk around, also during the day there were small craft shops open. We would recommend “Champers”, had a great dinner there, food was excellent, service was outstanding, a very upscale restaurant. Besides, there is Southern Palms beach hotel restaurant (located directly on the beautiful beach) has a lot to offer for lunch (we had fly fish twice there!). There is a nice cafe called “Surfer’s” in Oistins , they serve great lunch too . One big event you wouldn’t want to miss while in Barbados is Oistins’ Fish Fry on Friday night. The whole island talks about that event during the week, so we decided to check it out and were impressed by fresh cooked seafood, dancing and local crafts. Great times!
Sightseeing: We booked 3 tours while in Barbados. Deborah (excursion organizer, also gift shop sale assistant) was very nice, funny and knowledgeable. The first tour we booked was “Cool Running’s” catamaran sailing cruise, where we had the best time ever! The crew was great and funny, they entertained us the whole trip by playing music, serving drinks, lunch and cake. We swam with the turtles, did some snorkeling and had a stop for lunch in a quiet lagoon on a west coast. Everybody on board had a good time! The second tour was “Harbor Lights”, can’t say we were impressed, nothing special, the show was so-so, food and drinks were ok. We went there just to keep ourselves busy, since there was nothing else to do. Deborah told us that we wouldn’t like it much, since we already went to see a show “Roots and Rhythms” during our first visit to Barbados. She said that the “Roots and Rhythms” was the best on the island and the “Harbor Lights” was not that great. Anyway, it was ok (my personal advice: ladies, don’t wear high heels to the show, you’ll be stack in sand). The third excursion we booked was a private island tour; we had a driver who took us to the south-east coast, told us stories, showed great historical places, he even was kind enough to take pictures of us. Loved the tour! Since it was our second trip to Barbados we went to the south part, because during our first visit we covered west, north and east part of the island (which was fantastic, the north point and cherry hill are must see!). Don’t forget to visit Bridgetown. We had a lovely afternoon wondering around, walking along the streets.
Overall, Barbados is beautiful, safe and lively. Don’t stay at the hotel, explore the island and have a good time! I’m sure, we will be back one day, but next time, I know exactly where we will be staying- St. Lawrence Gap!:)
Room Tip: Top floor rooms are the best.
