Choosing a hotel involves trade-offs between price, location, amenities and destination. Discovery Bay hit the sweet spot of all four, delivering a great beachfront base to explore Barbados in one of the island's most upscale towns at a reasonable price.
Sure, as other reviewers have noted, you can get more updated rooms at other places. You can always pay more and stay at, say, Mango Bay next door . . . but why trade a more modern building for a much smaller beach and higher cost?
DB has one of the better beaches in Holetown (which although relatively small is certainly larger than it's neighbors'), together with one of the larger and more attractive gardens.
Staff are great . . .there when you want them, friendly and professional.
Room: No complaints . . .great garden view, nice balcony for morning coffee/sunset cocktails.
Small refrigerator (We don't do AI's so this was good to keep fruit, sandwich makings, snacks and mixers for our drinks). Limited TV channels, but we never really watched it. Big shower head in the bathroom. Very thorough housekeeper kept up with our sand. To be honest, for us a vacation is about spending as much time outside of the room as possible, so minor cosmetics don't bother us at all . . .in many ways they are part of the charm of an older hotel.
(Now if we were staying at Sandy Lane or Crane's, then yes, I would expect more . . .but we weren't and our bank account is grateful!)
Location: When you decide to visit Barbados you have to chose between the busy, active South Coast and the quieter , more upscale West Coast. We can get big well maintained AI resorts much closer to home . . .we came to extra distance to see Barbados, so for us Holetown was an attractive option. Lots of restaurants and shops, plus if you walk up the road a little you'll discover the Golden Anchor where you can hang with the locals at one of the island's best rum shacks.
The beach itself is great for swimming, and if you walk/wade 10 minute up the shore you'll find yourself at Folkestone marine reserve . . . great snorkelling!
As with all beaches in Barbados, it's a public beach, but still has a private feel. There are beach vendors, but most of them have stuff you might actually be interested in.
Food: We didn't go the AI route, so other than the manger's reception don't have much to say.Menu looked to have plenty of variety. We actually found Barbados to be the least expensive island for rum . . .$10 can get you a good bottle that should last you and save paying a modest $3.50 (US) at most bars. The rum shacks are great value, where
if you are with a group and buy a small bottle you'll be amazed at the small bar tab. Local trucks also have good sandwiches at very good prices, and there is a good supermarket within walking distance. There are plenty of options ranging from Tides ($$$) to Surfside ($) that you can walk to down the beach, as well as many choices between 1st and 2nd streets.
Most of the guests seemed to prefer the AI option. We found the mainly UK crowd to be friendly, with many people having come here for decades.(We wouldn't have been surprised to see John Cleese ;)
Can't wait to come back!
