“would I recommend this hotel to a friend.......”

We have just come back from a two week stay at Discovery Bay. We booked this hotel as we wanted a low-rise all inclusive hotel with buffet meals on the west (caribbean) coast, with a garden and direct access to the beach (not fussy eh!) This was by far the most competitively priced hotel, although having read trip advisor comments after the refurb. we were very apprehensive. We need not have worried. This is a typical Rex hotel and the Rex package suits us. Yes, the refurb has been scruffily finished. Yes, there were a few niggles, but then isn't there always. The bathroom's vanity unit and grouting clearly had seen better days and were in need of replacement. But the bedrooms were of a good size (ours overlooked the garden and swimming pool), with much more storage and wardrobe space than we often find in hotels. The rooms were kept immaculately clean. We enjoyed our meals. There was a good choice and the food was of a good standard. The beach area in front of the hotel was relatively small (although good for the west coast which has suffered from significant erosion). Though we found that with the number of sun loungers packed into the area, it could feel a bit hemmed in. However, there were also sun loungers around the pool and in the gardens, so there was plenty of space away from the beach. It was possible to walk along the whole stretch of the beach, walking around and over the boulders which had been placed to stop further erosion. The staff were brilliant. I understand many of them were new, but they were always polite, willing and cheerful. Many of the hotel guests had been to the hotel on numerous previous occasions, and were unhappy with the changes to the hotel, in particular the relative inexperience of some of the staff and the fact they missed the staff who they had known for many, many years. There was almost a club atmosphere among the returning guests, who liked to talk about the "good old days". We enjoyed our holiday.and thought it was tremendous value. I have given it 4 stars as I do not think you can expect 5 star luxury from a 3 star hotel. Will we return - yes. Would we recommend it to a friend - well .........

“Nice but!”

Lovely setting. Hotel right on the beach. Shame that the recent refurb has not been finished to a better standard. Paint splashed over the floors and also on the curtains? did they not think to remove them before they started? Only small observation i know but it's the little details that matter and so unnecessary. The bathroom door was in a bad state, looked like there had been some water damage at some time.
Otherwise very relaxed setting and food OK, a bit like being in a school canteen and some times certain foods ran out if you did not get in to the dining room early.
The staff were great and very friendly.Rooms cleaned every day.
The gardens were nice and were worked on every day by a dedicated staff.
Small gripes but after all it was far cheaper than other other places were the setting not so good. Would i go back? yes.

Room Tip: garden rooms quite pleasant. If you are lucky you might get a free upgrade to the beach rooms, which...

“food still bad after all these years!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

we have just got back from a week at DB,well sad to say apart from a lot of blue paint it aint changed!!! we went because we were meeting friends who had booked this hotel,we had stayed here 4 years ago and the price was alot cheaper then so we went with the flo....you get what you paid for,we booked a sea front room this time which is fine clean patio doors are so past it it took 2 of us to pull it open they dont lock they just have a bar thing to click in place!! lovely sea view only when standing,as we were on the ground floor, when sitting on rickety old chairs you look at a wall with rusty chicken wire below its holding the bricks together, the path along the front only needs to have some shingle or grass and it would look ten times better.
well what can i say about the food!!!!! breakfast is probably the best i think we ate 2 times for dinner!!! and lunch was terrible fish same pasta same meat well what ever it was same again if you like burgers then your ok but you expect alittle bit more for your dollar!!.we ate out most nights with our friends as they couldnt eat any thing apart from breakfast, what amazes me is the restaurant was full???? its like well iv paid for it i will eat it,we ate at the sandpiper next door a few times as the food is top notch.
what i think and i did those 4 years back the hotel could be quite wonderfull if the management got there act together,ok new paint very blue in the lobby they even had new white paint on the bricks in the bar!!!! new decking was nice but step down from the decking your on old tiles that are smashed and even dug up!! that could have been done in a day!!! not enough staff hardly saw any maintinence people at all go next door staff all over the place.they have got this new pergola thing near the beach which would make a great beach bar day and night, but nothing in it just a few random chairs!!!!!this would make a great place at night,a few flame torches like they have at the other hotels each side of discovery bay,but no the only where to drink is in the lobby bar, with one bar staff.oh and if you dont get up at 6.30 am you dont get a sunbed on the beach!!! yes this is no word of a lie,my husband did it in the end put he towels on the beds then went back to bed like every one else!!!
we stayed in sunswept the last few years but it was full!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so we thought DB would be much better as the price is much higher than before, but we were wrong.[check the web you can always get a room at DB!!!!
the staff as few as they are are lovely and helpful,we tipped them, we feel its a shame as not many people do.
we travel all over the world and have stayed in 5* to pensions so i think we know a bit about hotels, believe me this place could be wonderful so please Rex owners get it sorted.

Room Tip: beach front on a higher level not ground floor

“Still a 3 star, cheap & cheerful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

I stayed at this hotel for a week with a friend & had been expecting great improvements following the recent refurbishment -Not quite what I'd expected! This is still definitely a 3 star hotel which could easily be a four star with a few improvements - the rooms are spotlessly clean with a great service from our cleaner but the hotel itself lacks any sort of atmosphere, there was only live music twice while we were there & every night the bar closed around 11.30pm! Far too early when you're on holiday & in the mood to relax & chat with fellow guests. We were disappointed with the food for lunch & dinner & thought it all resembled school dinners, fruit was lacking for all meals unless you ate watermelon or bananas which we got quite bored of very quickly & it would have been good to see more light lunches with greater choice of salads & cold meats rather than the stodgy spaghetti bolognese, macaroni pie, beef & yorkshire pudd's-I found it quite strange that in a hot country so much stodgy food was served with most of the vegetables being overcooked. However, saying this there are lots of good restaurants within easy walking distance which we took advantage of . The location of the hotel is fantastic & fronts onto one of the best beaches I've ever seen - sundbeds were always available & its such a pity that the hotel haven't turned the empty lean to near the beach into an evening bar as with a few twinkly lights & some cushions it would make a brilliant bar venue. I loved Barbados & will definitely be going back but not sure if I would go back to this hotel but if you want to experience the Caribbean on a budget & don't mind the limited food on offer then I would definitely say give this a go. The people are really friendly & we met some great people.

Room Tip: we had a garden room on the 1st floor which was fine for our week but the higher floors have better...
