We'd been away from Treasure Beach for 29 years when we returned in December for two weeks -- with some trepidation, as we'd loved the hotel and the beach, and all else Barbados has to offer -- when we made our first trip from our then base in Moscow in the early '80s. We knew the Wards, who made such terrific hosts, had passed the hotel to other hands, and that new rooms had been added with the addition of a third floor. We worried that the changes might have deprived the hotel of some of the quiet, almost private atmosphere we'd liked so much on our first visit, and that there might be nobody left on the staff who we'd recognise.
We needn't have worried. The beach seemed a little narrower than we remembered, though whether that was a nostalgic illusion or the result of a great storm some years ago, we couldn't tell. There was, to be sure, quite lot of scattered debris from the reef at the water's edge that made for careful treading on the first few steps into the sea, but in all other respects it was the lovely white beach, and warm aquamarine sea, that we'd loved when our children were still knee-high.
And the hotel -- the uncrowded feel of it, with only 35 rooms; the immediate access to the pool, the restaurant, the beach, and the lush lawn with its loungers that overlook it, none of them more than 50 paces away from our "ocean view" suite; the old familiar faces (and greying hair!) among the staff; the excellent meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner; swift access by the gloriously cacophonous buses that run past the hotel every few minutes to Holetown and its boutiques and restaurants; and the warm welcome and good stewardship of Jason, the GM (along with his good-humoured tolerance of shopworn Pommy jibes about the Aussies!): all made for a terrific two weeks.
John Burns
From Jane Scott-Long: We made a very last minute booking, had to change our plans late, Debbie in reservations did a fabulous job accommodating us. Helen on arrival was very welcoming. Richard in the Bar makes a mean whiskey sour and Big John is one of the most charming men on the planet. Kirk and his team in the kitchen with their great meals kept us in every night -- even though we had booked B + B thinking we'd go out and try other well reviewed restaurants. In the end we only went off site once -- the tuna was the best we've ever had and Kirk's team lured us back again and again. Fabulous break all around, and we'll be back very soon.
