“The most overrated hotel reviewed on tripadvisor”

I chose to stay at the Malliouhana based on the glowing reviews on this website. I've usually had a good experience, however, something is completely off with respect to reviews concerning this resort. We stayed just over a year ago, so this review is long overdue.

Traveling with young children, it was essential that we find a place that 1) had all the comforts of the exceptional neighboring resorts on the island, and 2) was family-friendly. The playground was a huge draw for us.

Unfortunately, the resort disappointed us so much that we cancelled our reservation after 24 hours and switched hotels. Here is why:

1) The resort is outdated and is in desperate need of a renovation. The rooms are cold and characterless, with creaking doors. The common areas are not well-kept. The resort is unremarkable in every way, especially in comparison to the others on the island.

2) The restaurant at the hotel has an early seating for families. We had to dine before 7:30, which is usually more than okay with us (we normally dine at 6:00 at most places). Unfortunately, for adults who actually choose to dine with their families - we were only able to order from the room service menu at the restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The menu given to our family at the early "family seating" was the room service menu. This was completely absurd and insulting, and has never happened to our family anywhere, EVER. The service was also completely underwhelming - mostly rude and spotty.

3) The playground was old, not well-kept (dirty leaves floating in the water), and is located off the main premises of the hotel. Honestly, even though we loved the idea of having our children play in something fun, it was pretty disgusting, for lack of a better word.

4) The price to stay at this hotel is equivalent (if not more than) some of the other neighboring resorts, that are truly luxurious.

5) We had a waterbug issue in our bathroom our first night. Unacceptable for a resort charging this much money. Also unacceptable for people travel with young children.

After arriving and checking into the hotel with our family, we were absolutely heartbroken. Even the landscaping on the property is completely unimpressive. We've stayed at various Four Seasons, One&Only and Rosewood Resorts around the world, and this resort paled in comparison. Even though we had already unpacked our belongings, we spent our first evening calling AMEX and made arrangements to leave the following morning. We were lucky to find a room at the nearby CuisinArt, where we paid much less for an oceanfront room. The service was top-notch, the resort was lovely, and the staff was really warm and welcoming of our children, despite not having a playground. We enjoy carefree evenings playing bocce ball and dining at their evening barbecues. We were also fortunate to check out Cap Juluca during our stay for dinner one evening. And Cap Juluca was simply spectacular, from what we could see.

In sum, I have no idea why the Malliouhana Hotel comes so highly recommended. There are plenty of other resorts we have stayed at in the Caribbean and Central America that are family-friendly and spectacular in every way (Jumby Bay, Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo). In many ways, this place felt like a third-rate motel. We even spoke with taxi drivers on the island over the course of our stay, and asked them what they thought of the Malliouhana. All of them mentioned that it's simply not what it used to be...

I would strongly advise anyone against staying at this resort. When we called AMEX to change our trip, the travel specialist we spoke with actually mentioned that there was a reason why they have not partnered with the Malliouhana (and they did with Cap Juluca and CuisinArt). Although we also hear that the new Viceroy is wonderful. Simply put, for the same price, you can stay somewhere else and have a truly magnificent experience.

“Wanna go back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2011

During our travel to St. Martin from Dec 30 to January 12, 2011 we decided to take two days and visit the beautiful island of Anguilla. We stayed in the luxurious resort of Malliouhana Resort and Spa. It was my first time visiting Anguilla and my husband’s second (as he is in the travel business) and his description of Anguilla did not do any justice. The island of Anguilla is stunning, with it’s beautiful azure waters - simply breathtaking. We did not rent a car so our travels within Anguilla were very limited. The taxi service is very, very expensive but very accommodating (they will give you there number and when you’re done simply call them and they will come back and pick you up – and you pay then).
For our dinner experiences, one night we went to the famous Veya Restaurant in Sandy Ground. A 10 minute drive I believe and it cost us $50.00 to get there and back. The food was excellent; our waitress was between excellent and okay, the reason why I say this was she seemed uninterested and I felt pressured to ordered or know what I wanted as soon as she asked. The owner of the restaurant went to everyone’s table which was a nice touch, but forgot to come by to ours.
Our second night we went to Blanchard’s. It is about a 10 minute walk from Malliouhana. If you do decide to walk, make sure you bring the small light keychain provided by the hotel in room, as it was a bit dark and make sure you spray the “off” which is also complementary in your room so the mosquitoes don’t bite. The staff was friendly, food was good but not worth the money that we spent.
Our stay in Malliouhana was excellent, I could have not asked for anything better. The hotel was not very busy and very quiet with more of a distinguished list of guests staying there. The staff where friendly, polite and courteous. The property has a rustic, European, British flair to it which gives this resort it’s own style. The property is very well maintained considering it’s long history. The rooms were spacious, clean and not to mention the gorgeous view of the ocean we had. I loved having my morning coffee and delicious breakfast on the balcony. They offered free internet service downstairs in the library which was very accommodating….again watch those mosquitoes 
The one thing I was shocked about, which I guess if I did my research or if my husband told me there are no TV’s or clocks in the room. This provided me with a bit of an uneasy feeling for the first 10 minutes but afterwards I realized vacationing is about leaving the fast world behind you and relaxing (versus just saying you’re going to relax).
In our room we were greeted with a hand written, signed thank you note from the owner with a complementary bottle of wine and a few appetizers – a nice touch.
The beach at Malliouhana, was absolutely full of beauty. Crystal Clear, clean, clam and warm, I am still at awe about the waters there. The sand was white, and you can walk for miles….
There beach service was excellent and now doubt, because Dupie, the gentleman who looks after the guests on the beach did an outstanding job.

“Best setting, food and staff for exceptional dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2011

Our family reserved the Malliouhana Resort for a very special event.........our son's Rehearsal Dinner. Most of the evening was planned through emails with the catering manager, who really took care everything. We had one meeting with other staff and florist and that was it. The venue for the dinner was magnificent, outside and overlooking the sea. The food was unbelievably good and the presentation not to be outdone by any five star restaurant. The management and staff were so personable and caring about every detail, making sure they had everything just perfect. It was indeed a memorable evening in every way and the Resort is to be commended on their professionalism and quality.
My only regret is that we did not stay there.......but next time......WE WILL !

“Elegant and Understated luxury with Impeccable Servie”

Our recent week at the Malliouhana was everything we hoped it would be. Incredible water views, a magnificent beach, beautifully appointed rooms with spacious verandas, a worldclass spa and the friendliest most attentive service you could ever hope for. In addition to being incredibly friendly, the staff is attentive without being intrusive. Even the beach service is amazing. Dupie and Griffin take great care of you and makes sure your drink doesn't go empy and that your silver ice bucket stays full. We were made to feel immediately at home and will look forward to returning again!

“Wedding memories that last”

My friends and family stayed for a week to celebrate our wedding. Malliouhana creates an amazing 1 of a kind experience for you and your guests. We were all treated with the upmost respect and priorty the entire vacation. They made our stay fun, relaxing and memorable. With beautiful views, spectualer beaches, water skiing, snorkeling, as well a childrens area to keep everyone entertained.
As expereinced travelers my husband and I never travel to the same place wanting to explore and see new places we vowed to ourselves as well as all of our guests that we would go back for a reunion. This is one place that is worth going back to.
