My boyfriend and I chose to visit Auchen Castle as it is the sister hotel of Castle Venlaw, in Peebles, the location of our first ever break away together. Unfortunately, Auchen is not of the same standard of Venlaw, but it has a charm of its own. Like Venlaw, Auchen is more stately home than castle. It has an air of neglect, in a romantic sense; the long winding approach is quite overgrown, the walls are mossy, and the gates tilted and rusted, while the building itself is well lived in.
Our room was spacious and cosy but not luxurious, although the view across the hills was nice and the en-suite bathroom was large and clean. A major criticism has to be the bed; although it was very big and comfortable, we were kept awake all night by an inexplicable heat that seemed to come from the mattress; it felt like lying on hot sand, odd as it sounds!
The food was very nice, (although Venlaw was outstanding) but the atmosphere was poor- partly because there were so few guests, but also because the dining rooms were pretty bare and the staff weren't very enthusiastic particularly the bar man, or boy rather, who clearly doesn't enjoy his work.
Breakfast was markedly better, with beautiful china, a good selection of food on offer- continental self service and table service for cooked breakfast, and beautiful views.

Thanks for your review, however the castle has not been open as a hotel since we took over so I think you must have stayed a while ago, when it was in administration. The castle has since undergone a massive refurbishment of the interior, bedrooms, gardens and lake and is quite different to the way it was then! It is now exclusively used for weddings, and we've had some fantastic new reviews from some of our wedding parties since we took over. I'm sorry you experienced the castle during that period but hope you'll be glad to hear that when we took over the points you mentioned were all addressed immediately and the castle is a very different place today.
Kind regards,
Mark Lynn
