My husband, a couple of friends and I stayed at the smaller of the cottages two weeks ago. We had traveled to England by the Queen Mary 2 and I wanted to show my husband the beauties of rural England as he had never been. We couldn't have chosen a more beautiful location than Devon and a nicer cottage than Yapham. We especially appreciated Jane's delicious scones with the pots of jam and clotted cream the evening we arrived as we had been traveling since 6 a.m. Although the weather was stormy, the cottage with its thick stone walls and good central heating was cozy. The kitchen was very well equipped, the bedrooms comfortable; our friends were especially happy to see that they had an en suite. We were pleased to have Scrabble and a Junior Trivial Pursuit to while away the evenings. During the day we put waterproof outdoor gear on and tramped around the coastline, visited Tintagel and Clovelly. It was wonderful; the weather didn't bother us a bit and it was lovely not having to fight crowds at Tintagel.
One word of caution: restaurants are difficult to find open at this time of year and we would advise you to go farther afield than Hartland if you are looking for an evening meal. Our takeway fish and chips were terrible (my husband actually got ill on them) although Jane assured us that something must have been wrong that night because the takeaway shop is usually very good.
