Don't go expecting a hotel because you'll be disappointed. However, if you go with the mindset that it is a viable alternative to camping you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The accommodation is basic but comfortable. The toilet & shower rooms are dated but functional. But you don't come here for the accommodation, you come here for the surroundings. The cabins are based in a small secluded wooded area that feels safe and secure. The fire pit & bbq make for a wonderful atmosphere!
Be prepared, purchase food & charcoal before you travel up the mountain. Also take extra bedding, even in September it is COLD!!!
Not to be missed - your first view of the crater SHOULD be at breakfast from Volcano House. The breakfast is ok, but worth every penny for the views!
Go for a night time drive to the Jagger Museum, to see the volcano glowing in the darkness.
Invest in a 4x4 hire car and drive to Mauna Kea summit for a breathtaking sunset view!
Also, if your budget can stretch to it we cannot recommend highly enough a helicopter flight over the volcanoes & Hilo.
