“It's Lonely At The Top of the South Ridge”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

This is the second time I've stayed at the Maswik Lodge. The first time was 2 years ago February. The lodge appears to be under new management and using fewer staff. I stayed with my wife in a south room. The rate quoted was $92. It was negotiable when paid in cash. Desk people were definitely NOT the friendliest I had ever come across.

The rooms are a bit frayed. I had a ground floor room which I assumed was a handicapped room as the doorways were especially wide and there was a myriad of safety handles in the bath. The heat worked wonderfully which was a plus as the night time temps fell precipitously. Beds were comfortable. Parking lot is full of deer at night. Canyon Rim is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Cable television. WI-FI available. No refrigerator.

As few guests as there were at the Maswik 2 years ago there are far fewer now. There is a cafeteria style restaurant adjacent to the check-in desk. There is also a pizza pub serving mediocre pizza. The bar there seems to be a big attraction for park employees getting off of work. I never saw anybody but my wife and myself in the pub as far as tourists were concerned.

The hotel is fine for what it is. You're paying for the location and not the amenities as there are few amenities to mention. We might have stayed longer if it were not for the lack of social atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ground floor room in winter is best as the steps are icy.

Dear N0ahsdad,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Maswik Lodge. We appreciate your continued patronage and would like to offer you our sincere apologies for not exceeding your expectations during your recent stay. We would also like to hopefully provide an explanation for the inconsistencies you noticed during your visit:

- Maswik Lodge is still under the same long-term management of Xanterra Parks & Resorts. Since your visit was during the winter months, when guest visitation is typically at its lowest of the year, we likely had fewer staff on duty to match the decrease in demand.

- The rack rate for rooms at Maswik Lodge is $92. The winter rate is $85. It may have been a miscommunication on our part, but you received a discount since you were visiting us at a time when our winter rates were valid. We do not offer additional discounts when a guest pays with cash; our rates are the same no matter the method of payment.

- All of our Maswik Lodge rooms have refrigerators, albeit mini refrigerators. Guests sometimes overlook the refrigerators as they tend to blend into the surrounding furniture and fixtures.

Again we appreciate your continued visitation to the Grand Canyon South Rim and Maswik Lodge. We hope your recent experience does not dissuade you from visiting our facilities in the future so that you may experience our usual high standards of operation.

Sincerely,

Mike Harding

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We decided to go there as there was nothing else available and we booked quite late.
The room we were given was not clean when we walked in which is a bit unusual given that the people before us clearly left it in a rather ugly state.
The other room was ok but not great and is a bit far of the rim. Clearly overpriced for what it offers and compared to other places in Grand Canyon.

Dear Aurelism,

Thank you for providing us with feedback on your recent visit to the Grand Canyon South Rim and Maswik Lodge. Feedback from our guests is critical in assisting us with maintaining high standards.

I am discouraged to read that you were dissatisfied with your room. When a guest checks into a room that doesn't meet their expectations, we encourage them to inform hotel management at the time of their visit so we have the best opportunity to find a solution. This ensures that every guest's experience at our South Rim lodges is exceptional.

We hope your recent visit to the Maswik Lodge doesn't discourage you from returning to the park and enjoying our usually high standards of operation.

Sincerely,

Mike Harding

“Decent enough, and it is in the Park itself”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Just being in the Park means prices are up, so you can't do a direct comparison with 'similar' hotels. Probably the best value inside the Park, because it's not on the rim which attracts a further premium.

Just seen other reviews which referred to it being 'a minutes drive away from the rim', and 'driving to the main lobby from the bedroom blocks'. Sorry, what's wrong with walking? About 5-10 mins walk through pleasant surroundings to the rim and the other hotels with 'proper' restaurants - Maswik Lodge itself has a large, multi-station cafe which would suit families. Food's OK, prices not too bad.

Room was a good size and very well appointed. Only grumble was the sheets don't fit. Had a king size bed and the sheets too small to tuck in properly, allowing the undersheet to ruck up. Spoke to a housekeeper, who said only one size of sheet throughout, too small for the kings but too big for the queens.

“Only real option besides camping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

A glorified, over-priced motel. Adequate room with leaky sink and weak toilet. Old tube TV (but why are watching TV anyway?) The worst thing here is the cafeteria. Overpriced, stale offerings, and a breakfast burrito that simply will not sit well in your stomach. But at the end of the day, if you're not camping, this is the only way to stay overnight at the Canyon. Without it, you won't be able to see a sunset, sunrise (amazing) or the Milky Way across the night sky. It's a 5 minute walk to the rim and the stop for the Arizona Shuttle that drops you off from Flagstaff. Bright Angel seemed to be teeming with buses so Maswik seemed like the more quiet option. But that cafeteria (shudder).

“Good location, although somewhat overpriced for what it is”

With Maswik Lodge, you're right in the heart of the the South Rim part of the GC national park. Just a minutes drive and you're right at the canyon.

Rooms are basic but just what you need, lets face it, you dont come to the Canyon to spend time in the room.

Personally, I'd rather stay in Tusayan where theres a bit more to do after dark. Absolutely nothing to do in the Canyon obviously.

Also, bit of a nightmare to try and find the various rooms, as they are all in separate blocks and in winter you pretty much need to drive to the main lobby as its that far away.
