“Seeing the bush through local indigenous eyes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Tess' day tour was special and unique - on my day, we had 4 women in the car, but she can take up to 6 people in the 4WD. I asked for lots of waterholes - we visited 3 different spots; Wangi falls was glorious. Tess grew up in the area, so has heaps of stories. She will also show you the bush through indigenous eyes - how to live and eat, experience and be at one with 'country'. ITiming is flexible; catering is good but not extravagent - but it's the insider knowledge and stories that she will share that is the most special part.
If you want a small personalised tour by a local who knows the area well- this is for you.

I rang NT Indigenous Tours, the week before I went to Darwin as her tours sounded like something a bit out of the norm. I was specifically interested in bush tucker as i worked in the food industry and was looking for something special which I could add to a new product i am introducing onto the market mid 2012. Tess told me she was excited at the prospect of having me for three days and likewise so was I. Tess told me she would send my itinerary through, I presumed the next day and as I heard nothing and didnt get a reply, I also sent me email so her itinerary didnt bounce back, still no reply. I send her a text and you guessed it, no reply. I tried to phone her and got her answering machine.
I arrived in Darwin early in the morning no sleep on the 24th Oct 2011 the girl I was staying with suggested I phone again, still the bloody answering machine. There was another number on the message so I tried it again and no I did get her, she said there had been a death in the family. OK but it would have helped to have known this before i left Melbourne, looking forward to something that didnt eventuate and at least telling your clients, Lyons Cottage you werent on tour, but Tess nobody knew and as a professional operator, you needed to tell everyone that displays your brochures you cant do the tours for whatever reason. I woudnt recommend you because you didnt communicate.

Never the less I had a great time with another company, suspect it was cheaper as well and met some great people in a small group.

I am devastated to read this ‘review’ from a person who didn’t even experience my tour. And I don’t think it’s fair that she should be allowed to take out her frustration and lack of forward planning by devaluing my tours on tripadvisor.

My tour company is a one-woman show—I am the tour guide, receptionist, everything, trying to earn an honest living in a competitive world. I spend 12 hours most days on tour, mostly out of mobile range, then return to clean my vehicle and prepare food for the next day. This is why my answering machine points people to my informative web-site and on-line booking system, and explains that when I am out of range I will try to reply that evening.

Despite your claims, I did return your calls. Several times I left messages and one night you answered and I spoke to you at length about the private charter itinerary you wanted. I asked you to call me back to clarify some things and when you didn’t I assumed you’d decided your budget didn’t stretch to what you wanted from me. Some people do. It’s OK. My tours are expensive, as they are very small and personalised. I don’t have the economies of scale that allow bigger companies to spread their year-round business overheads between a far greater number of clients. Most people, however, tell me my tours are great value for the unique experience they get.

I am planning for my tour business to grow next year so I can employ a full-time business manager and receptionist (as well as other guides) to improve pre-tour communication. I welcome people to my unique and highly personalised tours and I’m sure that most will have experiences they’ll never forget.

“Rather disappointed”

I booked this tour because it came highly praised in the reviews and seemed to offer more than just a commercial coach trip. However, it did not live up to expectations and we ended up rather disappointed. Perhaps Tess was having an off day but I can't believe it was the same tour other reviewers had raved about. It consisted of a stop to see some termite mounds, a breakfast we we were left to order, eat alone and pay for ourselves, a stop at a waterfall where swimming was possible, a visit to an old hut by disused mines, a poor lunch by a stream which was meant to be an old homestead but was just unattractive scrub, another stop to a busy waterfall and then back to the hotel far earlier than we expected and missing out some of the itinerary. I was expecting a fascinating insight into Aboriginal life but we were told and shown very little of interest and left on our own at most of the stops. We were the only two on the trip and I felt Tess was not really interested that day. Considering it cost more than twice the cost of other trips I think we did not get value for money. The larger tour groups would have been more fun, seeing crocodiles for example, or other Aboriginal guided tours (if one wanted to be less commercial) we subsequently discovered seemd to offer much better value for money.

I’m so disappointed to read this review (so long after the event) but I can understand your sentiment. Your tour was at the height of the tourist season when I was getting burnt out from so many long tours in a row, and a guide I’d employed to take this tour had let me down.

You were very quiet and despite trying hard I found it difficult to engage you. You may be right that a large tour would have suited you better. My tours are not for everybody. For those who like to be passively entertained, with a structured itinerary that ticks off all the pretty places, there are many tours available. My tours are not like that. They are interactive. They are about Aboriginal things and Aboriginal time. They are flexible, in the moment and dependent on people’s interests and what is around at the time. They are about bush foods and medicines, Aboriginal stories and sacred places. They sometimes include family, which is the Aboriginal way. They are about personal and political discussions. They depend on two-way communication.

For next tourist season I am planning to restructure the tours so I don’t get burnt out by continuous 12-14 hour days, ensuring visitors have an even better experience with me. They will really be something to look forward to.

I am truly sorry that you did not have a memorable experience.

“The most memorable, beautiful day, opens your mind and feeds the soul"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

Tess took myself and my two children on her tour last Saturday 27th August 2011 in Litchfield National Park near Darwin. Having travelled quite a bit and not being a fan of bus tours, I was sure this type of intimate small group tour would be something special. I was not disappointed. In fact the time we spent in Litchfield park and chatting with Tess and her daughter (who kept my daughter company) was life changing in a most subtle gentle way. Tess invites you in to her world with such passion and love for her people and her land. Every tour will be unique and personal and to a large degree what the traveller will get from the tour, I think will depend largely on what they put in. I feel richer as a person for the short time I spent with Tess and I am very glad that my young children were with me and we could share the experience together. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who thinks a little outside the square, I would rate this took as very special.

Thank you so much for your review of my tour. You and your kids were so delightful, and so much fun to take out to my country. You really hit the nail on the head with your comment about what you get out of something depending on what you put in. That is so true of life, not just my tours!

Thanks again for coming. I hope we meet again somewhere sometime.
