“Great view, but this place is not for everyone”

Just had one night here, and my advice would be, if you are staying in the Pinhao area and have transport, don't stay here, stay at the Casa de Visconde in Chanceleiros which is just much better in terms of food, wine, rooms, pool, garden and ambience. The room was quite cramped and had superfluous "antique" furniture without much use. Service was supposed to be old style country house, but was a bit irritating. For example, I wasn't going to unpack because only there literally overnight, but left some bits and pieces on the bed before dinner and it was only by chance that I opened the wardrobe in the morning and found they'd been put away when the maid turned down the bed, so could easily have left them behind. The company at dinner, as it happened, was great: interesting and pleasant travellers with plenty to say. The food was served in old fashioned style which some may like, but the cooking was not better than average. Good wine, though limited list. The manager was very attentive and eager, but not very good at picking up on non verbal cues, and ended up being quite intrusive. The grading given to service is to reflect this and not the service from the other staff, who were very good.

“Getting spoiled in the Douro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

I would agree heartily with the last poster, great view amazing service. Richard, the major domo, was phenomenally attentive. The setting is really incomparable, and it's a good location if you are trying to organize a variety of visits to the quintas. Richard will take care of everything, speaks perfect English, and maintains a wonderful wine cellar from which to choose an afternoon's bottle to relax with on the terrace. The morning light makes for the best pictures, but this is a view to overwhelm your senses and take you out of yourself.

We spent two nights here, and could have stayed longer. Rooms are simple and serviceable, good light in the bathroom, and we were never cold. Breakfasts and dinners are straightforward and tasty without being showy. We enjoyed the family style dining, meeting very interesting and charming other travelers.

The inn is is a little tricky to find at the moment - there is construction going on in the little village and the signs are down. It is 4.6km from the time you take the sharp turn up the hill. If you see the school/basketball court or the raised cemetary you have gone just a tiny bit too far. If you run out of pavement you've definitely gone too far.

“Stunning view, amazing service”

This six-bedroom hotel reputedly has one of the six best views in the world, according to the BBC, and it certainly lives up to its billing. The view from the terrace, where you can swim in the afternoon and sip port in the evening, is simply spectacular. The rooms in the 17th century manor house are nothing special, pretty simple really, and even a bit stuffy on hot days (there is no a/c and so you need to leave the door to the terrace open). But the view and the five-star service certainly make up for that. The dinners and breakfasts are all served family-style, with the guests gathered around a large table, which makes for interesting conversations. The meals are simple, nothing fancy, but the Casa's own wine is really excellent.

Ricardo, the major domo who runs the Casa day by day, is a great host, always at your beck and call. Our oldest son wasn't feeling well when we arrived, and by midnight he had nealy a 104 degree fever. Ricardo drove our car down the twisting mountain roads to the nearest ER, an hour's drive away, and then stayed until past 3 am, so he could drive me back once we discovered what was wrong (our son had a bacterial infection). By 7:30 am, he was back on the job.

One thing you should know: The hotel is all cash, though Ricardo suggested they might soon get a credit card machine.

“Superb!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2010

We drive up from Pinhao and stopped in early in the evening and were lucky enough to get the last room available. We absolutedly loved everything about this place and can't wait to return. Our room was very large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing, even fresh squeezed orange juice. The guest house dates back hundered of years and has always been in the same family. It is filled with antiques. The service is outstanding. Great value, euros 100/night.

“views breathtaking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2010

It has been awhile but how can one forget this! We stayed in the private room above the garage so I can only comment on this. Climbing up to the entry one has a fantastic view. This room is quite large with wonderful windows overlooking the valley. The bath was good size and very clean. It would have been nice to have some afternoon snack/coffee available. Luckily I brought fruit with me on the trip.

The pool is fabulous, very clean and well kept.
Walk down through the vineyards and to the olive groves, nice little trek.
Walk around the area outside the Inn.

Service is wonderful but I cannot remember if they took credit cards...check before you pay as I remember we luckily had the cash we needed.
Dinner was a chuckle as my partner is a vegetarian so they made him duck...really sweet..but not vegetarian; therefore I ended eating it!

We walked around Pinhao and found it very friendly. There is an absolutely scrumptious/excellent restaurant across from the train station. Great place to stay in passing, we were there two nights.
