“The best place where we have ever stayed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

We spent 2 weeks in this nice place. The hotel is quite small with small houses with ground and 1st floor around a tropical jungle with animals and spa where you can take unforgettable massage. The rooms are spacious, with airconditioner and small fridge and a safe. The rooms are cleaned twice a day, and in the evening, a guy is coming to treat the room against insects. There are a lot of mosquitos, so I recommend you to take strong repelents for going outside (repelent with at least 50% of deet). The employees are so kind and helpfull that it could not be better. They are still smiling, never ask for any money even they would deserve. Because we could not decide whom to give some tip to express our big thanks, so we used a small box placed in the exchange office which is also the part of the hotel and is for everybody. The language is not a problem, they speak English very well. The hotel is guarded at all please where you can enter. It is not directly on the beach, I guess about 150m, you pass the garden of another hotel which is in the same area. The beach is cleaned every day, the sea is clean and because of Bentota river, not so strong, we were there every day. In the hotel, we took the demostration of preparation of Sri Lanka´s food organized by the chef, we enjoyed it a lot. What is sad that the hotel, together with other two – Riverina and Palm Beach, will be closed from May 2011 until December 2012 for reconstruction.
Close to hotel, there is a post where you can buy the stamps for postcards.
What to see near hotel – Beruwela village, abt 200 rupees with tuk tuk, a very small with few shops (we bought a good quality sarong there), Aluthgama, abt 100 rupees, also a small village with shops, supermarket and shop where to buy arak; the temple with the biggest sitting Budha in south Asia, really nice place. The price for tuk tuk, be sure that the first price when you ask will be 300 rupees at least, you have to negotiate before your trip and if you are still not satisfied with the price, go on foot and in few seconds, some tuk tuk will stop on the way and will give you the required price, and if not this one, the other one yes. If you have never been in Asia, donot worry to negotiate hardly, but nice of course, you will always succeed.
For the trips, we used a services of Luba Tour. Luba is a beach boy with net of cooperators. Even we did not know what we should have expected, finally, we made all our trips with Luba – boat trip in Bentota river, trip to the temple, to Galle for one day and two day´s trip to Kandy. The cars were always airconditioned and clean, Luba speaks English very well, the accomodation was comfortable. If you want to contact him, you can send en e-mail before your trip to lubatours@gmail.com or to ask anyone on the beach, Luba is wellknown or to call 0094 777 405152. About the price, they are in general less expensive like with the travel agency but negotiate, like everywhere in Sri Lanka.

“Excellent value and peaceful”

Enjoyed my stay here, even though the weather was pretty terrible. Food good, staff friendly and efficient, hotel peaceful. My only grumble would be the bathrooms; rather down-at-heel, and often only a trickle of water in the shower.

“Small and Friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2011

Just arrived back from a week at T.V. in Beruwala. Brilliant.
We spent a lot of time searching for a small quiet hotel in Sri Lanka, trawlled many websites and then checked out the independant reiews here on TA, finally deciding on the un-classified T.V.
The Hotel staff could not have been more friendly, helpfull and accomodating.
The Manager made a point of speaking to most geusts every day, the Food and Beverages Manager was always on duty in the restruant to answer any queries or advise on food or dishes.
The food itself was really good, huge variety and well presented. The Chef's ommlettes at breakfast were to die for.
The rooms are large and very well serviced by the room attendants, mosquito nets and a new plug in anti mossi repellant every day.
The Hotel grounds were immaculatly kept.
The pool and garden area's were all very tranquil and peaceful. No loud thumping music/games etc which allowed for a very peaceful holiday.
Just a short stroll through a neighbouring hotel brought you to a very 'natural' beach. No rows of sunbeds here.
On a sad note the Hotel is closing end of April for 20 months along with 2 adjacent Hotels (all owned by the now same group)
There is a saying in UK....'if it ain't broke...don't fix it', which is very applicable here.

To sum up..............very enjoyable, quiet, friendly hotel.

“An unexpected gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

I have to admit to initial trepidation when we arrived at tropical villas - its position on a busy road was alarming, but after a restful night's sleep the hotel's charm revealed itself.
The staff were, without exception, friendly, warm and welcoming. The hotel manager, Cyril, was highly approachable throughout our stay and made a point of getting to know his visitors.
After a busy week visiting the sites we were looking forward to relaxing at this hotel - which were able to do. It was a very short walk to the beach - which was glorious, edged with coconut palms. We had been advised not to swim in the sea, but the rolling waves proved too difficult to resist - it was hugely enjoyed by my teenage children!

Hotel excellent – staff friendly and helpful – Cyril the perfectly host
The stay at the Tropical Villas was the perfect relaxing break in an oasis of calm
The hotel is small and set in own grounds with an excellent pool and five minute walk from the beach where you can expect to be pestered by the beach boys
Cyril the manager is the perfect host leading his team to ensure that you enjoy your stay with them
Talking to the staff they have all be there for some time and go the extra mile to ensure you enjoy the stay for example flowers on the pillow when they have set the Mosie net in the evening
Food is always freshly prepared and good with a wide variety all of which are available in generous portions
To escape the hotel I would recommend Darma for a taxi – Darma may be found at the gates of the Palm Hotel or on 034 227 4578 // M 077 519 60 63 – a full day tour to Galle and Weligama (the stick Fishermen) ---8000 Rupee – Darma also recommended a lunch stop an Coffee stop at very reasonable prices
Alternately by Tut Tut (Percy located at the front of the hotel ) will take you to Alutgama (200 Rupee) , Beruwala (300 Rupee) or the Brief Gardens (1000 Rupee) – entrance 1000 Rupee each – but well worth a visit
You can also walk to the Big Buddha (20 minutes) turn right out of the hotel then left once over the river – inside is the tsunami memorial – moving
The Cargills (Food City) supermarket in either Alutgama or Beruwala is set price (no haggle) for the tea and spices essential as gifts for home
There is talk of re development of the hotel which is now part of a group that includes both the Palm and the Riveria hotel – watch for what may happen – I hope that they don’t spoil paradise
WiFi available 60 mins 200 rupee – we used a Skype video link to show our daughter round the hotel and ground s – the staff were either delighted to be able to say hello to London or thought us to be mad
