“Great location, great welcome, HOT HOT HOT.”

We stayed for 2 nights in September. The staff were very welcoming and well organised. The food was good, especially when you consider where this place is. However, the tented hut was not as well set up as other ones we stayed in, and very hot. The sand dune drive was N$850 each. There were only 4 of us on the trip, but the guide was young and lacking in confidence and english, so this didn't seem good value for money. we didn't take the afternoon trip to the canyon (N$450 each) but our friends, who did, said they enjoyed it.
Top tip: Although the water is 'safe' we both had (mildish) stomach upsets which we put down to the water. later on in the trip I met a local guide, who had actually worked there, and she stuck to bottled water.

“Great service, beautiful location, but HOT!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

The staff, food, service, guides and location were all great. Roomy tented accomodations with mosquito nets and attached baths built from stone. When we flew in on our charter and passed over Kulala Wilderness Camp, I was amazed at the beautiful, isolated location of the camp at the base of a hill in the desert.

But do not underestimate the heat in this area. In mid-September it was always a sweaty 95-98 degrees inside the tents in the afternoon, and the fan only made me feel like I was in a convection oven. Because the tents face west, the afternoon sun/heat prevented us from using our balcony or from uncovering the front windows. Couldn't take a cool shower because even the cold water was quite warm.

I'd recommend visiting Kulala Wilderness Camp during the Namibian winter in June or July to avoid the extreme heat.

“fantastic location, professional management, good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

We stayed in this place in summer 2010 for 4 nights with two teenager in the age of 12 and 15. What makes this place really special is the location. It sits just by itself on the side of a small hill with great views to the west on a desert valley. It's a good location for visiting Sossusvlei as this lodge uses a private entrance to the park - although we had no chance to enter before sunrise like the visitors using the main entrance. The pool was too cold to enjoy but the food was great and the bungalows are as well, spacious enough, clean and with a nice terrace for sitting outside looking towards the sunset. A disadvantage we see is that you cannot book this location directly in the internet but only through the authorized travel-agents, what makes this more complicate and unnecessarily expensive. All in all - some truly expensive lodge but compared to other places nearby a good location for seeing the dunes at Sossusvlei.

“Not worth the money unfortunately”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2010

The staff at the camp were exceptional and very friendly. They really made up for the bad service and administration at the Cape Town office where out trip was booked through. Really thoughtful they arranged a sundown drive for my husband and I as we were on our honeymoon. But that was sadly that was it for honeymooners. Not recommended for honeymoon couples. Nothing else specially was arranged unlike some of the other lodges we stayed at where they went out of their way. Nice location but cant see the dunes from there. Quite a long drive to the dunes. Food was average at that price I thought. they did make an attempt to accomodate for food intolerances though. No mattress outside to sleep on. No aircon in that heat at that price. we didnt think it was worth the price sadly. lovely accommodation and loevly staff nice views. sadly for us the mess up happened before we arrived at the camp.

“No A/C in 42C does not a happy camper make”

It's a great location, the staff are lovely and the rooms are very nice. It's great being in the middle of the desert. But it was so unbelieveably hot when we were there (late November) that we couldn't sleep. The rooms aren't air-conditioned, so with day-time temperatures in the low 40s (celsius), it was stifling. The nights were not much cooler and a the fan didn't help, it just made it more like a convection oven! If visiting in Nov or Dec I'd recommend paying the extra to stay at Little Kulala which is a bit fancier and has A/C. If at other times of the year, then I'm sure you'll love it. There are three properties with "Kulala" in the name (1) Kulala Wilderness Camp (i.e. the one the subject of this review), (2) Little Kulala (the fanciest one with A/C - N.B. it has a different entrance about 60kms away from Kulala Wilderness Camp and (3) Kulala Desert Camp (which is close to Little Kulala, has no A/C, is larger and has smaller rooms that Kulala Wilderness Camp. There is also Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp near Kulala Wilderness Camp (currently being remodeled) and all four are owned by the same company, Wilderness Safaris.

Sossusvlei/Deadvlei is not to missed though. Just amazing.
