“Not what the website depicts!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

This resort is literally beautiful from the second you get there, however the pics on the web do not show true depictions of what it is like. First my husband and I traveled for over 10 hours of flights to get there right at 10pm local time and we were told there was no way to keep the kitchen open for us and they had prepared a club sandwich for us to share! Next the bar had no one but us at it and every liquor was horrible. If your hungry at anytime, you better suck it up and eat when they offer the meals cause there is nothing else they will make for you and the food was tasteless. Not only was our first day ruined by our experience with food and beverage, we were told they had overbooked the specific room we had reserved months in advance and the only thing they could do for us was giving us a 200dollar spa credit. The beach has a very harassing couple of people that wont let you sit in peace and want you to buy their jet ski rides or jewelry. I would never consider going back even if we won it as a free trip. Go to Sandals if you want real service!

“It gets better every year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

This is my 2nd review after returning from my 4th visit. What can i say, every time we go we love it even more and it gets harder to leave, we just get looked after so well. During our stay it was our 27th wedding anniversary and when we went for breakfast we were given a beautiful flower arrangement by Kerry, Jermaiine and Vincia who are among the most wonderful staff in the world, The welcome and attentiveness to all the guests not just repeaters is a big part of the cocobay experience. The Virgin Holidays rep actually told us that no other hotel in Antigua has as many guests who return so that in itself tells you alot. I understand that they are doing a few cosmetic updates soon which to be fair is needed. I am already planning my 5th visit next year

“Peaceful, relaxing and beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2010

We stayed at Cocobay for 7 nights in early June and were not disappointed. From the moment we checked in, we were greeted with cold towels and rum punch - we knew we were in for a good time. I had followed a number of the reviews and have to say that most people have the right perception of cocobay.
The service was some of the best i have received in the Caribbean, and I must make a special mention for Sonia who serves on the egg bar for breakfast as well as Oriel our fantastic, but cheeky bar tender for the evening.
The Cottages were as expected, rustic in style but just as we wanted. Although our cottage had air con it was $8 a day to use and so we used just the ceiling fan and this was just fine. We had a great view of the sea and beach and I loved taking an afternoon nap in the hammock. We didnt have a plunge pool, but again the cottage was still great. the bathrooms are a little tired, but taking a shower with the doors open both in the morning and at night was lovely.
The food, was also some of the best I have ever had in the Caribbean , with a good selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner was usually 4 courses with a great selection. I am a fussy eater and the restaurant were happy to make me slight variations on the meals being served.
The pool area was gorgeous and there were always beds available. The only downside was that there was very little shade and the pool could really do with some umbrellas. The decking area is a little tired too, however i understand that the owners are going to be doing this in the coming months.
The resort, is for couples, honeymooners and people looking for a relaxing time. It is quiet and peaceful, but just wonderful. There are 2 evenings a week with entertainment, but this ends by 10pm. Other than that, there is not even music by the pool or bar. This is exactly what we wanted and so I would warn you. If this is not what you want then Cocobay is not for you.
The sandflies and mozzies were annoying, and I was bitten a few times. Take plenty of insect repellant, as well as cream if you do get bitten. My partner was not bitten at all though.
We loved Cocobay and would not hesitate in going back at all.

“Like heaven, if heaven served all-you-can-drink alcohol”

We stayed at Cocobay for five days before getting married on their beach on June 14, and like many previous reviewers we found our experience there fantastic. I've been to Crete, Boracay, Negril, Grand Bahama, and a number of U.S. beaches and Cocobay's beach is absolutely the most gorgeous I ever seen. The air and water temperatures were comfortably warm, the breeze relaxing, the sand was soft, the waves were gentle, and the view of the bay was out of this world.

We stayed in the Tamarind Cay Cottage and visited our 18 wedding guests' various cottages - all of them were clean, beautiful, and simple. Our little pool was perfect for a romantic night swim. Honestly, even walking up a winding walkway past flowers, palm trees, mango trees, and other cottages to get to ours was pretty romantic! Every day we would lose electricity for a few minutes to an hour, which was strange but really quite minor of a point.

The food and drinks exceeded our expectations. Yes, it's best to arrive earlier for (buffet-style) breakfast and lunch, but even when we arrived half an hour before they stopped serving lunch there was still plenty to choose from. The curried beef was incredible! Dinner, a four-course sit-down affair except on Thursdays and Sundays, was also very tasty. I ordered a fish dish, a meat dish, a vegetarian phyllo dish, and the pasta of the day on different nights and nothing disappointed. The pasta portion was more generous than the others. The appetizers were quite inventive and beautifully plated. And save room for dessert! My drinks of choice were the bloody marys and Wadadli (beer), but the rum cocktails were not bad either.

Before I get to the best part of Cocobay, I just want to make my only complaint: the sand fleas. The pain and itching from their bites still wakes me up at night three days after I left Antigua, even though I practically bathe in hydrocortisone and calamine lotion. Definitely 100x worse than mosquitos (I didn't really see too many of those). I don't think the staff of Cocobay can do much about the sand fleas because I'm not sure they own the pond near the beach where the sand fleas probably procreate, but honestly it would've been nice to get some sort of warning from them, such as "don't go out on the beach in the early morning or early evening when they're most active" or "you should bring insect repellent to the beach so that you can reapply it after getting out of the water." That's all.

So, the best part of Cocobay is by far their staff. I have no idea why anybody would say that they are unfriendly or unhelpful, that was simply not the case. EVERYBODY, from the receptionists to the manager to the wedding coordinators to the bartenders to the cleaning lady to the towel attendants at the beach, was bending over backwards to make our stay perfect. I can only say that maybe some reviewers expected in-your-face grovelling for tips in the style of the waitstaff of Applebee's. No, people didn't grovel - they actually went about their jobs with self-respect and professionalism.

We are planning on returning to Cocobay for our one-year anniversary and anniversaries to come. I really cannot say enough great things about this resort, you need to see it to believe it!

“Beautiful Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2010

Stay at this resort for at least 3-4 days. The infinity pool is amazing and the views are a photographer's dream. I loved the wooden decking around the pool and for all the beautiful walkways on the cliffside. If you upgrade to an oceanfront suite you get your own little infinity pool on the verandah! Highly recommend.
