We stayed at Cocobay for five days before getting married on their beach on June 14, and like many previous reviewers we found our experience there fantastic. I've been to Crete, Boracay, Negril, Grand Bahama, and a number of U.S. beaches and Cocobay's beach is absolutely the most gorgeous I ever seen. The air and water temperatures were comfortably warm, the breeze relaxing, the sand was soft, the waves were gentle, and the view of the bay was out of this world.
We stayed in the Tamarind Cay Cottage and visited our 18 wedding guests' various cottages - all of them were clean, beautiful, and simple. Our little pool was perfect for a romantic night swim. Honestly, even walking up a winding walkway past flowers, palm trees, mango trees, and other cottages to get to ours was pretty romantic! Every day we would lose electricity for a few minutes to an hour, which was strange but really quite minor of a point.
The food and drinks exceeded our expectations. Yes, it's best to arrive earlier for (buffet-style) breakfast and lunch, but even when we arrived half an hour before they stopped serving lunch there was still plenty to choose from. The curried beef was incredible! Dinner, a four-course sit-down affair except on Thursdays and Sundays, was also very tasty. I ordered a fish dish, a meat dish, a vegetarian phyllo dish, and the pasta of the day on different nights and nothing disappointed. The pasta portion was more generous than the others. The appetizers were quite inventive and beautifully plated. And save room for dessert! My drinks of choice were the bloody marys and Wadadli (beer), but the rum cocktails were not bad either.
Before I get to the best part of Cocobay, I just want to make my only complaint: the sand fleas. The pain and itching from their bites still wakes me up at night three days after I left Antigua, even though I practically bathe in hydrocortisone and calamine lotion. Definitely 100x worse than mosquitos (I didn't really see too many of those). I don't think the staff of Cocobay can do much about the sand fleas because I'm not sure they own the pond near the beach where the sand fleas probably procreate, but honestly it would've been nice to get some sort of warning from them, such as "don't go out on the beach in the early morning or early evening when they're most active" or "you should bring insect repellent to the beach so that you can reapply it after getting out of the water." That's all.
So, the best part of Cocobay is by far their staff. I have no idea why anybody would say that they are unfriendly or unhelpful, that was simply not the case. EVERYBODY, from the receptionists to the manager to the wedding coordinators to the bartenders to the cleaning lady to the towel attendants at the beach, was bending over backwards to make our stay perfect. I can only say that maybe some reviewers expected in-your-face grovelling for tips in the style of the waitstaff of Applebee's. No, people didn't grovel - they actually went about their jobs with self-respect and professionalism.
We are planning on returning to Cocobay for our one-year anniversary and anniversaries to come. I really cannot say enough great things about this resort, you need to see it to believe it!
