We have just returned from 12 days half-board at the Colony Club - our first time to Barbados. Overall we had a very nice time at the hotel with good weather. We enjoyed the beach and sea (despite the best efforts of the beach vendors to spoil it for us) and the complimentary water sports are great.
We liked the Colony Club but I can understand why other reviewers say it is need of refurbishment. This is true of some areas and I think that the Laguna restaurant could do with an upgrade and a deep clean. However, in a way, a major refurb would take the character away from it.
Our room, which was an upgrade, was very spacious and the bed large and comfy. Our only complaint was the lack of water pressure for the shower and generally we prefer a walk-in shower to over the bath, but this is a very minor issue. There was also a noise issue, some sort of machinery during the night, which was a little disturbing. It's just about the only hotel that I've ever been to that has provided a teapot in the room - a major plus point for any avid tea drinker. Some Earl Grey tea bags would have been nice though. Also, Coffee Mate is utterly foul in tea but we had fresh milk from room service at no charge.
The staff were extremely helpful, pleasant and efficient, a little too efficient at times by being to speedy to clear away plates when one of us was still eating.
We found Barbados to be very expensive everywhere and I think the Bajans need to be careful not to 'kill the goose laying the golden eggs'. It certainly puts me off returning. I was very glad we did the half-board option. The three 'specials' night helped to alleviate the boredom of the same menu but the food was of a good standard always. We did find the portion sizes on the large side and perhaps they cater more for the US market. One club sandwich between us at lunchtime was enough. We also enjoyed half-price cocktails at happy hour.I can't undertand why some reviewers have complained about a lack of choice for breakfast - hard to see what else anyone could want.
A quick note about the Lime Grove shopping centre which is nearby in Holetown - don't bother. They advertised being open on a Sunday and this was true. However, the majority of the shops were closed - completely pointless. In any event, they all looked very expensive and the whole place looks unfinished.
In summary, Colony Club clearly gets a lot of repeat customers and we did at times feel like we were intruding on a private party. Overall we enjoyed it and certainly came home feeling very relaxed. If we do venture back to Barbados I would certainly consider staying here again.
