On our recent visit to Hakuba, we were able to book in a 10 night stay at Side Hill.
We opted for the tatami room and used the communal toilets, basin area and ofuros (which are close, clean and convenient; the toilets are state of the art!). This worked perfectly for us.
Our room heater was toasty and our towels were changed regularly.
We ate dinner on 6 evenings. Some of the other evenings, we could smell the food and regretted our decision to eat out. Kikuo makes inventive, delicious and beautifully presented food. We didn't have the same meal during our stay! But would have been happy to have had some courses again: chocolate bread, green tea French toast, mini croissants; and for dinner, fois gras, Hakuba pork, chicken confit, pan fried fish, soup, toasty baguette, beef tataki, fruit compote, brownies. We felt very spoilt. He also has an extensive wine selection and mixes delicious cocktails from his bar.
There is wireless through the lodge. I loved the lounge area which was an awesome place to chill out, read, watch movies or the sumo tournament when not skiing. Tea and coffee are complimentary.
The location is perfect, close to restaurants and bars but quiet. Bus stop to a number of resorts is two mins walk.
It was so wonderful to return each day to a roaring fire and hot baths. Kikuo, his family and staff are exemplary hosts.
We can't wait to go back to Side Hill.
