“Most welcome stop after walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We passed the Cuckoo Inn on our way to a nearby car park for 6hrs of walking.

On our return we noticed the sign stated outside, muddy boots and wet dogs, do we popped in.

Lovely clean bar, double sided fire place roaring away and very friendly staff, even the Chef had a joke with us.

Food was prompt, hot and delicious, my wife stated she could eat the rhubarb and ginger crumble every day! Ales were good and staff friendly.

Would we visit again, yes tomorrow after another walk! This time the wife can drive so I can taste more ales!

Visit the place, ideally located after a walk or enroute.

The recently refurbished hotel has comfortable rooms with good facilities and is ideally placed for exploring the Lakes. A warm welcome, log fires, a friendly bar, good food and helpful staff enhanced my stay. Recommended.

“Not what it used to be . . .”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

This hotel has changed hands and is not what it used to be. Gone is the lovely friendly welcome that walkers used to get. Gone also is the lovely Claife Crier Bar, named after the local legend about a ghost who haunts the nearby Claife Heights. Where the bar once stood there is now a collection of manky old chairs and sofas that look like they came out of a skip. We were given a very good breakfast but staff attitudes were most unwelcoming : (

We do understand that it is shock to many guests that the Inn has been refurbished and that many people do have fond memories of the old place. But it was in desperate need of renovation, the building was quite literally falling apart, the old bar was rotting away and was very damp and a bit smelly. We have given it a fresh new face but one which is traditional and in keeping with the area – gone is the rotten carpet but replaced with Cumbrian Wool Carpet, gone are the cold metal baths but replaced with deep baths with power showers, gone is the damp bar and replaced a beautifully furnished bar with a better choice of ales and antique furniture. I am sorry that you found our staff unwelcoming, this is most unusual as friendly staff is something that we always get positive comments about. We hope that you will return and let us show you how welcoming we are.

“Couldn't even get as far as the front door”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Poor customer service! I purchased a KGB voucher on the 8th Jan., which offered me a two night Lake District break at the Cuckoo Brow Inn. As it states in the fine print I called the inn to make a reservation for the 24th and 25th Feb. I was told that there was no one available on reservations and they offered to call me back the following morning. The following morning came and went so I called again in the afternoon only to be told there was no one available again from reservations but they would get them to call me back in "5 mins". No one called back so I decided to email instead explaining politely the number of times I'd tried but been unsuccessful. I asked the question again regarding possible availability. Once again I didn't get a reply to my email. I called again almost 1 day later after sending the email and 2 days of attempting to speak with reservations. I asked to speak to the manager and he said I was speaking to him. He said his name was Chris (according to previous reviews his name is Dan - he may be new or is Dan using a pseudonym!). I asked if he'd received my email to which he replied he'd been off for 2 days and only in for the last few hours. I explained that I was trying to book a weekend. He said they had sold over 300 vouchers and there was no chance of a weekend up to the vouchers expiry date at the end of June but a Sun and Mon might be OK. His couldn't care less attitude was appalling and he showed no customer service skills what so ever. It came across as though they couldn't cope with the influx of requests due to the vast number of vouchers being sold. He said they didn't even have some one specific on reservations because they were so small so I wonder why I was fobbed off each time I asked to speak to them. I fully understand the fine print of KGB deals and a mid week break will have to suffice however this has left a bitter taste and I am left questioning do I really want to stay there now anyway? If I don't its a total waste of money and the money spent could have been given to a far more deserving hotel/B&B in the Lakes instead.

The KGB deal was a very popular and yes we were very busy taking bookings once the offer was released. The first few days were crazy to say the least, with the 4 telephone lines ringing off the hook all day. However, the service you received was extremely poor and your call should have been dealt with immediately to ensure that you secured the date that you wanted. Chris is our deputy manager and it is extremely unusual to have a complaint about his customer service, we will be discussing your report with him. I am sorry that it has left a bitter taste but I am confident that once you arrive you will find that we are great small hotel and you will enjoy your break away with us.
