“Old coaching inn offering comfortable if not fancy accomodation - lots of character, good food and friendly welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

We stayed here when in the area for a family celebration. Howwood Inn is (we were told) the oldest pub in the area, and has lots of character. Although they didn't seem to be expecting us (we had booked by phone in advance) we were made very welcome. The accomodation certainly isn't 5 star, but comfortable and spacious; and very well priced. Only criticism would be that our room could have done with a wee vacuum - but as they weren't expecting us.....The freshly cooked breakfast (and there was no pressure to check out early) was fantastic. The dining room/restaurant was really interesting - great tables and chairs! The menu for evening meals looked great and very tempting - we wouldn't hesitate to sample the restaurant another day!
This is a nice wee family pub (although it's quite busy with locals until late at night) , which doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. The owners are very friendly and accomodating. If you are looking for a comfortable room, without frills and a fancy price tag, and good fresh food, then I'd recommend the Howwood Inn.

“Good value, Good Food and Good atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2009

We stayed here last week before catching a flight from Glasgow. We thought it was good value. The room was comfortable and clean. Our evening meal was served in the restaurant. The surf & turf from the specials menu was great and we finished it off with a bottle of wine in front of the fire in the lounge / bar. In the morning our full cooked breakfast was served prompt at 7am as requested and the staff had our taxi waiting outside for us. All in all we thought this was a great place to stay and is within easy reach of the airport.

My husband and I had a meal here on a Saturday evening in November. We were shown to a table in front of the window, which we immediatly recognised had a very cold draft coming from the window.I asked if the window could be closed and was told that there was an extractor in the window causing the draft. There was a radiator right under the window but was off and also an electric fan heater but that was also turned off.Wewere moved to the next table but it was equally cold. The steak my husband ordered was so ordinary not what you would expect from a specials menu. The 'hand cut 'chips were straight from a frozen bag.My salmon was very good however. I ordered banofee pie only to be told after 15 mins that it was finished. There were only 4 other diners at this stage and I failed to understand why it could take so long to look in a fridge and realise the banofee pie was finished. The deserts took a total of 25 mins to reach our table.
I found the range of toileteries in the ladies very strange. There are lipsticks, nail polish, tampons, deodrants, cotton wool etc on top of the baby changing mat. There is a collection tin obviously for some local cause.I fail to understand what female would use such items. How unhygenic ,I wondered what the environmental health inspector would say.
The whole experience was dissapointing and very cold.Take a cardigan!

“What you see is what you don't get”

The Howwood In in its hey day (aka the 2 reviews) was a great place atmosphere and amiable 'mine hosts'. My wife and I stayed there recently for 3 nights visiting our oldest friends in the village, they could not take us as they had no room.and this is our experience of the Inn
1) arrived on the Tue evening to be told no evening meals being served and no Continental breakfast the next morning
2) Asked if we minded dogs as the owner above our bedroom kept them (were not told this whene we booked)
2) Back stair out of the Lounge Bar to the room, smell from the (Public) Gents toilet below the room present during our stay...whew!!
3) Key code for the door to get you to your bedroom door
4)Exit in the morning was out a door at the back of the Inn where the rubbish was kept
5)The website has never been updated since the previous owners

Could go on but thank goodness we had friends in the village and thanks to the Village store for the brekkies and the laughs
Apart from this particular experience Howwood is a great place surrounded by wonderful countryside

The Howwood Inn is a fantastic place to stay, eat & drink. The meals are fabulous, and the friendly staff could not be any more helpful. Highly recommended.
