“Excellent stay at the Lugger”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We got a late deal rate and it was so good we stayed an extra night. Hotel rooms very nice with soft beds and nice linen. Right on the harbour slipway, so as close to the sea as you can get. Nice log fire burning all day in the bar, great attentive staff and excellent meals made from top quality ingredients. The starters are around £8, the mains range around £20 and puds or cheesboard £7. If you like quantity over quality, you may not find all the restaurant food to your liking though. Great wine list also and hot chocolate drinks or a slice of home made cake left in the room for you every night along with the following days weather forecast. Well worth a stay here and we will be back.

We stayed at the Lugger last september, absolutely wonderful, a bit hairy driving down to the Lugger Hotel. We are going back this September for our friends special birthday and anniversary who are coming over from New Zealand.

For something special I can well recommend the Lugger

“Lovely unspoilt location”

Stayed at the Lugger Hotel end of December having had afternoon tea there on a couple of occasions previously. Very impressed - knew it was a lovely spot but the overall package exceeded expectations. Cream tea, very good dinner, pre meal nibbles and coffee all included and the icing on the cake was hot chocolate and marshmellow waiting in the room on our return from dinner.

“fantastic location”

Stayed here for a break in January (special offer) after friends recommended the hotel.Amazing location, like you hope Cornwall will be but often isn't due to overdevelopment.Hotel is well furnished,we were in the cheaper rooms but still had a glimpse of the sea.Great attention to detail, hot chocolate at bedtime, cakes in your room when you return in the afternoon.Great beds ,bedding and pillows (I am obviously ageing because this matters more and more!) Breakfast was good, with a good range and emphasis on local foods however they couldn't provide the vegetarian breakfast when we were there. The restaurant was a tale of two nights, the first night was excellent, speedy, effficient and the food was excellent, fantastic local oysters, excellent steak, a little skimpy eg 4 chips with the steak. The second night service was slower, my main course was missing a major component, I wondered if it was because the owner was off duty having probably worked all Christmas and New Year. All in all we would go back just to walk out the front door after breakfast and go up onto the cliffs.

“Lovely hotel let down by measly dinner portions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We stayed at The Lugger Hotel between Christmas and New Year 2011. We stayed in room 302 (double) and room 312 (twin); we moved from 302 after the first night as our bed was very soft and uncomfortable for two sharing (we met in the middle!). The hotel staff were very helpful in changing our room to a twin and I was very impressed with how friendly and helpful everyone working at the hotel was. I could not fault the hotel on service and liked the nice touches such as freshly baked cookies in the rooms and an evening turn down of the beds, the provision of a bedtime hot chocolate and water and sweets for the journey home. However, those who like a firmer bed will struggle with the beds at this hotel as they are on the soft side.

Our only real disappointment with the hotel was the restaurant. The starters were all around the £8-£10 mark and tiny followed by tiny mains averaging at least £20 (two veggie options of around £13-14). We opted for just a main each and when this arrived at the table we had to laugh as the mains we chose consisted of the following: (mine) melanzane parmigiana (circa £14): 3 shavings of aubergine rolled up on a plate with a pine nut-based filling drizzled with a sauce- more a starter than a main; (my husband's) pork tenderloin (circa £20): 3-4 thin morsels of pork meat no bigger than a couple of centimetres in length each sitting atop a dab of mash drizzled in a gravy. When the waitress asked me if she could get us anything else I was very tempted to say 'yes, the rest of our main courses!'. Instead I asked for some more bread.... There were no side dishes to order, nor had any of the staff warned us that really to feel well fed we would need to have at least all 3 courses and bread and even then we might go to bed with rumbling stomachs! My husband had to have the cheese plate (£12 for one) to try and supplement his meal. Judging from the desserts I saw being set down at adjacent tables, they were equally small. We retired for the evening feeling underfed and ripped off. Working in London, I am used to eating in nice restaurants and whilst the quality of what I ate at The Lugger was good, I was really disappointed with portion size. After the generous Cornish breakfast we had enjoyed at The Lugger, I was not prepared for the hotel's evening nouvelle cuisine offering; this seems at odds with the 'seaside inn' character of the hotel.

The Lugger is a great little seaside hotel with a generous breakfast and nice situation. My advice- stay during the low season (the high season room rate is not justified) and eat at the local pubs unless you like tiny meals- The Ship Inn at Portloe and the New Inn at Veryan are recommended.

Thank you for your comments following your recent stay.

We are sorry to read that you felt the portions for dinner were too small for you. If this was the case, if you had said something to us, we would have gladly served you with more. We recently changed our menus and style of dinner and have found them to be very well received and we do feel your comments “tiny meals” are unjustified.

On a more positive note, we are pleased you enjoyed the hotel itself, the breakfast, the “little extras” and found the team helpful, so do hope you will consider visiting us again in the future
