“Simply the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

This really is simply the very best place to eat in South Lakes. It doesn't matter whether you are a small group or a big party the food is always first class and the staff friendly and helpful. I have eaten here many times with my group of fitness friends and the food is top quality with a great daily specials board and locally sourced produce. Relax by the blazing log fires in the winter after a walk in the Lakes. You will not be disappointed.

“great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

stayed here for 2 nights in the October half term with our 2 young children ages 11 & 9. was a little disappointed upon our arrival as we had been told on our booking that we would be in the larger family room (not the hotels fault though as we booked through laterooms).
however the staff showed us to our room and gave us the choice to decide if it was OK or if we fancied looking at the other hotel they run. after being shown the room we had no hesitation in staying here as it was more than big enough the only downside to this being that the fourth bed would be a z bed. whilst this was arranged we had a complimentary drink and snack provided.

now for the more positive stuff, the location is excellent for getting about to the south lakes towns and tourist places. the food here is very very nice and plentiful would say more homely than a le carte but that's not a bad thing as this isn't a hotel in that sense. the beer is lovely especially the black sheep and the breakfast went down a treat with all of us. plenty of options for breakfast from cereals to full English and as many cups of coffee or tea to wake you up as required.

the room we stayed in was room 2 and at the front of the hotel, lovely little touches from the little Kendal mint cake with the bottled water (replenished each day). also the tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits & fresh towels each day, nice clean soft beds. warm log fire in the dining area and good service in a busy bar

some of the more niggling facts about the hotel are the toilet is a saniflow and makes quite a noise either when its flushed or the water from the sink or shower goes through it. little bits of mould around the edge of the bath but that's being a little picky. and the noise from the springs from the z bed when our son was turning over in the night.

to sum it up generally a clean friendly hotel with true country character lovely staff and great home style food.

“Can't praise it enough”

Myself, my husband and daughter stayed at the Royal Oak the August bank holiday weekend. What a fantastic choice. On arrival we were impessed by the quaintness of the bar and dining areas and we were greeted by friendly staff, who showed us to our room.
The hotel on has 3 guest bedrooms, we were in the Ullswater room and facing the gardens at the rear. The room was unbelievably spacious with 1 double bed and 2 singles and room for another bed if needed. There was plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, an iron and ironing board,a tv, hairdryer, kettle, an adequate bathroom with a very powerfull shower and chairs to sit on whilst watching tv. Each day the hot chocolate, tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, bottled water and kendal mintcakes were replaced.
The breakfasts were very good and you could have a lot or a little, it was all in with the price. We had an evening meal there one night along with our friends and we could not believe the amount we got and the quality of the food for the price, around £10- £11.00 per person. No wonder we were advised to book as it fills up quick!!
The staff are so friendly and helpfuland the hotel is a bit of a hidden gem. We would definately return and have recommended it to several friends.

Room Tip: all the rooms are of a high standard

“fantastic service & great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

Stopped at the Royal Oak for a bite to eat one evening whilst staying the area, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous. A pie for my husband which was packed full of meat and lamb for myself cooked exactly as I had requested. Plenty of vegtables which were beautifully cooked. I would definatley recommend and will definatley be calling again when in the area.
