“Cut our stay short after one night.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2011

We booked in here for our anniversary and intended to stay for 3 nights, however, after one night decided to leave and find another B&B.

We were welcomed into the property by Gail's Husband. As soon as the front door was opened it became apparent that the property was not a no smoking property as advertised in the brochure. Peter was very welcoming and made us a cup of tea after showing us to our room. The room was spotless and very clean, the lack of tea making facilities was a draw back but we would have coped with that, what we could not deal with was the smell of smoke which filtered into our room everytime Gail had a cigarrette. Gail sat in the kitchen for her cigarettes and our room was above the kitchen. we mentioned this to Gail and was informed that she had "not had that complaint before", she did not offer to move us or curb her habit, in fact made no attempt to alleviate this situation.
The room was lovely but very cold when we came back in the evening, the radiators did not appear to work at a convenient time. The thermostats on the radiators were turned up high but the radiators failed to come on until about 2 in the morning by which time we had an extra blanket on our bed and was unable to sleep. In the morning Gail did bring us a cup of tea up to our room and then proceeded to have a cigarette in the kitchen so we got the smoke in our room again!

The breakfast was nice if you are happy with having no choice. There was not any cereal available. Gail did bring us a lovely dish of melon to start with, unfortunately she did not ask our preferences. I love melon but my husband has never liked melon. Unfortunately I could not eat the melon because Gail had sprinkled sugar on it which I could not eat, if Gail had asked us if we want sugar on our fruit or put sugar on the table for us to add to the food if we wanted, food would not have been wasted. The cooked breakfast was ok.

After much deliberation we decided that with the room smelling of smoke, no tea making facilities and lack of choice we cut our stay short and left. We found a lovely B&B with no smoking, tea making facilities and lots of choice for breakfast at half the cost.

“BLISS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2010

What a gem of a place ! Gail was most welcoming bringing us tea in her beautiful garden. The room was first class, spacious, light and tastefully decorated with very comfy beds! bathroom excellent also ,although a shower would be a great addition.
Breakfast was undoubtedly the best we have EVER had, good quality, well cooked and
wonderfully presented and served by Gail and Trudy. The sea was just a few paces away as was a very good inn and restaurant.Appledore is a very pretty and quaint little plaice with VERY narrow streets and winding alleys. WILL CERTAINLY RETURN!

“Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2009

I have just come back from a three-night stay at West Farm, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. It's in a lovely location, just steps from the sea and from a very welcoming pub, and only a few minutes walk from the centre of this delightful small fishing town. My room - not en suite but with my own private bathroom just opposite - was beautifully clean and comfortable, and nothing was too much trouble for Gail and her assistant Trudy. The breakfast had to be the best I have ever had at a b&b - though for two of the three mornings I reluctantly turned down the full English part of it. A fantastic fruit starter was followed by a cooked meal for those who wanted it, with vegetarian sausages and bacon if required, and then toast and home-made marmalade. On my third morning I decided to treat myself to the cooked meal in lieu of lunch on my way home, and it was superb. I shall definitely go back there again when I am in the area - and I speak as someone who has had a great deal of experience of b&bs all over the country in the last several years and there are, to be honest, not that many I would return to with such alacrity. Moreover, it's excellently good value.

“Wonderful Hidden Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2009

I booked a two night stay for myself and my husband at West Farm for the nights of 17th and 18th September, I had read the other Trip Advisor reviews prior to booking and must say, we were not disappointed.
West Farm was easy to find but it became apparent very quickly that parking at the front of the property was a problem, I dashed in through the gate whilst my husband remained in the car in a gap in front of the pub, the road is very narrow and leaving the car would have been impossible. I was greeted by Peter and very quickly and efficiently we were guided to the rear of the property where we parked the car in a very roomy secure garage.
To cut a long story short we were offered the choice of two rooms, a beautiful spacious double room, sumptuously furnished with a four poster bed and other lovely fittings. The other room was a very spacious Twin room with sofa, flat screen TV, large bathroom, and with the added extra of a door directly out into the garden. We chose the latter. The room was spotlessly clean, there was not a mark on the carpet and the bathroom was gleaming. There were toiletries available, not the usual things typical 'hotel' miniatures, but full size good quality products. The towels were plentiful and brilliant white.
We discovered the true gem of West Farm very quickly - the garden. It can only be described as stunning, a wind free sun trap filled with fruit trees, a pond and lovely flowers, a delight on several different levels. We had a wooden bench and table right outside the door and Peter was more than happy for us to collect some of his many apples.
Sadly Gail and Peter had to leave due to a family matter, and we were left in the more than capable hands of Trudy who provided us with a fantastic breakfast in a homely atmosphere on the two mornings we were there. The whole experience was warm, welcoming, friendly and relaxed, and I would highly recommend West Farm to anyone.

“Not to be missed!”

We stayed here for one night at this B&B whilst walking the South West Coast Path and it was one of the best decision we made on the whole trip. Gail and Peter Sparkes live in this manor house (it was a farm some 400 years ago) opposite the sea-front in the small village of Appledore. Gail and Peter are a delightful couple who gave us a warm welcome in their lovely garden. You must spend some time looking around the garden, by the way; it's almost worth paying to see it. Our room was large, comfortable and very clean (our bags, which we had sent on ahead by taxi, had already been taken to our room when we arrived). Dinner in the evening was in a local pub (which was fine) on the sea-front just a few yards away. Breakfast at West Farm, which was outside in the courtyard, was excellent: fresh fruit, wonderful scrambled eggs, home-made marmalade, perfect coffee.

This is a great place to stay with very kind hosts and is recommended without hesitation.
