“Keeping an eye on HH”

We spent 5 days at Chonor House this January. It is a lovely Guest House with friendly Tibetan staff.
It has a very 'chilled' feel, beautifully decorated, Tibetan rugs, lovely garden. We loved warming ourselves in the sun with a cup of honey, lemon, ginger tea.
It was definitely off season with many other hotels seemingly empty but Chonor House was still operating although there was some maintenance happening.
The management was very keen to make sure everything was comfortable and to our liking. They organised taxis and found out about Tibetan doctors that I wanted to visit.
The best bit - we could look out our window across at the home of HH the Dalai Lama. We didn't catch a glimpse but it was nice to know he was tucked up in bed just across the way!!

“The perfect end to a pilgimage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I spent 6 nights at Chonor House after a 6 month trip by myself through India. I loved the paintings and took a photo of the couple on the stairwell because it had some universal feeling about it. I had it enlarged and I wake to it every morning .
The food was delicious...my favourite was the vegetarian dumpling soup. Even though I travel alone, I ate with people every meal and had a wonderful conection with one of the children of the cooks who I shared my coloring pencils with.
I have never been to Tibet, but the paintings in the rooms transport you there on some level.
Being so close to the Dalai lamas residence is just a wonderful bonus and I did my walk 3 times around each morning and night and met so many people on those walks.
Did anybody mention that it is one of the Dalai Lamas sisters who opened this hotel. It is truly uinique.

“Best place to stay in Mcllo ... if you are not on budget”

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at Chonor house. Each room in the hotel is different and is beautifully decorated. This gives that extra 'wow' to your stay..besides the usual comforts.. clean ,airy rooms, nice bathrooms and good location. If you, like my wife, have a thing for paintings and artefacts you will not want to step out of the place. We were two couples with two children each and we had a great time.. especially the really long breakfasts. The bircher muesli is a must try. The lunch was also good though a tad pricey. There are plenty of eating out options outside so that's not a worry. The staff were very helpful and courteous. One of our most memorable hotel stays.
On a side note - a one day stay at the Norbulingka institute (in Dharamsala) would also be a great thing to do. So 2 nights at Chonor and 1 at Norbu..is a great combo.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms on first floor if you want more privacy.

“Beautiful hotel, excellent staff”

We really enjoyed our 3 nights at the Chonor House. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated with painted murals of Tibetan scenes. The staff was very friendly and accomodated all our requests. The mattress was a tad too hard for our taste so they quickly added a top mattress, no issue. Perfect location near the main Tibetan complex, temple and museum.

“Really dissapointed !!!!!!”

After reading positive reviews , I was really looking forward to staying at this hotel. I have spoken to the hotel reception as well as the manager . There is availability but I got a feeling they werent to pleased that I was only staying for one night . I would love to stay more but have to get back to work !
I have called them 3 times and emailed 6 times over past couple of weeks with NO REPLY.
I asked a local travel agent to assist me and was told that they will not take bookings from indians as only like white western guests are welcome. I am western but am not staying long enough I guess. The hotel should make it clear if they will only accept western guests and have a minimum night stay rule. Atleast then we can not waste time trying to make a reservation. !!!!!!
