“Want to stick up for this hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

I work for a well known travel agency in the uk and have never written a report before but felt this hotel needed to be stuck up for. I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Yes it is up a steep hill but if you had read the brochure before you had booked it then you will know that!! Transport is cheap and easy to get about. we used the hotel bus to puerto mogan on the friday(markey Day, which has to be booked in advance), which is a lovely place.

We booked a suite, which was huge, it had 2 rooms with interconnectiong doors, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. It was very clean. The pool area is fine my only complaint about it, is it is very slippy, make sure you wear your flipflops!. The food was good. I am a very fussy eater but always managed to find something to eat. Breakfast had everything you could possible think of for eating. The entertainment was the usual you get when abroad, my kids loved the mini disco at night!!. The hotel shop is a bit expensive there is a cheaper one in the hotel down the road from it .

I would Definately go back to this hotel, the weather is February was fantastic.

“Spectacular views for climbers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

I decided to write a review because Mogan Princess gets such mixed reviews. The Mogan Princess is a very tired princess and I suspect will be subject to a major renovation in the near future. It caters for a specific kind of tourist and is not ideal for everyone; hence the range of previous reviews from the very good to the very bad.

The good
Spectacular views
Tidy clean rooms
Bar terrace to watch sun going down
Good and cheap public transport (single €1.30) to Puerto Mogan
The weather

The OK
Food and bar for all inclusive

The bad
Lifts and steps
No shower in room
Room needed maintenance
Road (potholes) and poor path up to hotel (not the hotels fault but it is how you get to the hotel). Street lighting broken.
Treacherous slippery tiles in all public areas
WIFI cost (€9 one day, €18 three days and €29 a week). WIFI is limited to around reception area.

Tip
Room numbers are Block/Floor/Room therefore 4401 is fourth block, fourth floor, room 01. Try to avoid fourth block (the highest of the six blocks) and the first floor as your view will be partially obscured with the block in front. The exception is the first floor on block one which is the block at the large pool.
Car hire – much cheaper from UK than from the hotel and if you collect at airport, the car will be much quicker to the resort than a bus transfer as Mogan Princess is the last stop by the transfer bus.
If self catering or half Board – do your sums to compare cost with all inclusive. Few bars and restaurants in Taurito – much better in Puerto Mogan.

I was transferred to Mogan Princess by my tour operator as they overbooked my original accommodation. An option to cancel was not realistic as my leave was booked and three days notice of change does not leave many options to rebook an alternative. However I checked out Mogan Princess on Tripadviser and decided to take the transfer; I suppose I made an informed decision. Firstly the views from the apartments are spectacular as other reviews have stated. My room was studio type and had a double, not twin beds. I found the bed very comfortable. The bathroom was marble (or marble effect) tiles which looked good. The bath had a shower attachment but was only for rinsing hair – hence there was effectively no shower. I am a shower person so this was disappointing and was also the first accommodation I have stayed in without a shower.
Unfortunately my first impression of the hotel was poor. I knew from other reviews that getting to the rooms is equivalent to climbing the south face of Everest. If you have any mobility problems this will be a major consideration if you are considering this accommodation. I was staying in block 4 which is the highest block. Each block has four floors and lifts on either side. It’s just as well there are lifts on both sides of the block as the lift on one side of block 3 was permanently out of order. I could see from my room the lift panel on block 3 had evidently burnt out. I did feel sorry for one elderly man who was directed up the stairs after he had checked in. The going was tough without carrying suitcases as well - do not expect any help.
To qualify my first impression, when I checked in I was given the key to my room. After climbing up to the fourth floor I discovered the key wouldn’t open the door (it was one of those magnetic credit card sized cards). I climbed back down to reception (a combination of stairs (for the out of order lift) and lift. I queued as other people were checking in, and got the key recharged. Back up to the room and, of course, the key still didn’t work. Back down again, queued, and reception said they would send the maintenance man.
The maintenance man was at the room with the door open before I climbed back up to the room. Not a good start for me as I wanted to get into the sun and not waste time getting into the apartment. But at least we were in the room. A quick change and off for the pool. Closed the door and decided to check the key. Of course it didn’t work. Went to reception who charged the key and called maintenance. The maintenance man was called Manuel and it was beginning to feel like Fawltey Towers. We went to the pool.
On return from the pool; we were again locked out of the room. Descended back to reception who despatched Manuel from maintenance again. By time I climbed up to room, door was open and Manuel was descending down the stairs. Didn’t need back into the room until around midnight when the door wouldn’t open again. Another descent back down to reception to tell them this was the fifth time we had been down to reception (or sixth time if you include checking in). Manuel came back up to the room and was very apologetic. I felt sorry for Manuel who was only doing his best and if we made a fuss – he might be looking for a new job. He said he would replace the lock tomorrow and we agreed a nine o'clock start. Next day, lock was promptly fixed and the trauma of day one was over.
Day two went without much fuss but I was bothered. There were a number of faults with the room. Firstly the television didn’t work. The sliderobes kept falling off the rails and the shower, which wasn't really a shower, was permanently on when the tap was on. This was good for soaking the floor when the bath taps were running. To be fair, all items were promptly repaired.
This brought me to two realisations. Firstly my room must have been out of commission (for the winter season) to have had so many unreported or outstanding faults (key/lock, sliderobes, taps and television). Secondly the penny dropped about the shower. The apartment was one of a few with a ramp leading up to it. In addition the bathroom had large handles for getting up from the toilet and getting out of the bath. This was a room for disabled people, hence the bath and showerhead but no attachment (or shower curtain). Only in Spain would you find a disability adapted room in the highest block in the building.
Welcome meeting: I will leave my tour operator anonymous, but avoid the welcome meeting. They tell you the welcome meeting is 15 minutes – it isn’t. I felt an awful sense of déjà vu when the representative extolled the virtues of Sioux City. I didn’t think it was worthwhile twenty years ago and I have not mellowed with age. However the tour operator tries to bribe you with a resort guide which promises a £50 discount off your next holiday. After 45 minutes which includes a free incursion to ANFI with €45 tour operator excursion voucher (which I believe is a front for timeshare selling) I had enough and left without the guide. A total waste of time and I had heard it all before.
Resort: The Mogan Princess is not actually in Mogan (or Puerto Mogan) but Taurito. Taurito is a small resort made up of a few hotels and nearly out of resort shopping centre. The beach has black sand and small. The place to go is the nearby Puerto Mogan which has a nice marina, bars and restaurants and white sand beach. The bus costs €1.60 one way single and there are plenty of buses. The Mogan Princes has a courtesy bus but it leaves at 9:00 am which is too early. Maybe it was the time of the year (February) but snorkelling was poor and the sea was cold (although sea temperature registered 21C on my dive watch).
In summary, if you want to simply lie by the pool, get a tan and do not have mobility problem; this accommodation will be satisfactory. I had a bad experience with maintenance, but I do not think that is the norm.

“Cliff-side!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

Just got back from a weeks stay at the Mogan Princess with my fiance.
Having been booked in here after our initial hotel (Dunas Mirador in Maspalomas) was "Over-booked" we did read on here that people who were going to Egypt were moved there. I have to say I'm glad we were moved, heard from someone who lives near the Dunas that it's not a great place to stay.
Anyway, the Mogan Princess. This hotel is set high on the cliffs, overlooking Puerto Taurito. And when I say high I mean HIGH! In a straight line to the beach it's probably only 800 yards max. But the only way to get there is down a long, cliffside road, which takes you to the rear of the valley, then a stroll thru the middle of Taurito. The actual beach isn't up to much, dark volcanic sand, pretty rocky and small. behind the beach is the Oasis Taurito(?) with waterslides and plenty of sunbeds. Which, from the hotel, looks great! €14 just to get in. €2 for a sunbed €2 for a sunbed mattress. None of which are worth paying! The water is FREEZING, the tiles around the pool are disgusting! Missing or loose, considering there are people walking around barefoot, it's not best. Tiles in the pool looked just as bad, with black mould growing between the tiles. Needless to say, we're glad we didn't pay to get in, as we only spent 5 minutes there.
Back to the hotel.
Having broken my toe before leaving, I wasn't happy when I saw the layout of the hotel. Stuck to the side of the cliff in 6 blocks. Each reachable by a series of lifts. At reception we were given a map showing us how to get to our room in block 6. Lift to floor 4, block 2, walk along top of block 2, lift to floor 3 block 5, walk thru block 5, lift to floor 4 block 6. A lot further than it sounds!
After getting to the room we decided it was just to far for me to walk with a broken toe. So back to reception, they were happy to move us to block 3! Gave us another map and sent us on our way. What they didn't tell us was BOTH lifts on block 3 were out of order! 180 steps later with all luggage in tow, we arrived at our room. The room was a nice size, decent bathroom with a bath and separate shower. Two queensize beds pushed together. Beds were a good size, but like sleeping on the floor they were SO hard. Ask at reception for another pillow (you WILL need it). TV with about 30 channels, only 2 of which are English. I know people will say "Why is telly an issue? You're on holiday" Well, for some people it just is.
The view from our room (3410B) was pretty good, down over the beach and over to the Taurito Princess. Room was nice and clean and cleaned very well during our stay.
Staff on reception are helpful and all speak english pretty well, which is surprising as most of the guests are German.
Food: We were AI, so got to experience all 3 meals.
Breakfast was good, a selection of meats, cereals, bacon, eggs, pastries, juices all the usuals you would expect for breakfast. Bacon is very streaky and not the best. Eggs are ok, but if you like your eggs better cooked, just ask the chef nicely and they will turn the egg for you. The toasters work, after a fashion, you'll need to run your bread thru at least 7 times for it to get a mild tan!
Lunch sometimes seemed like left overs form dinner the night before. Still a good choice tho, the usual suspects are all there Mystery fish, Pork, Salad, sliced meats and so on. It's V quiet at lunch time as most people seem to eat elsewhere.
Dinner was better, all the foods as above plus Veal (possibly just Beef) Lamb once, a large selection of desserts, all the usual light cakes you normally get on AI. Self serve soft drinks and beer (careful with the beer tap, unless you like a pint of head!)
Dinner time can get quite busy with a certain nationality not knowing what queues are (we all know who I mean)
The bar above the dining room is a nice size, plenty of seats fro everyone and nice balcony with a good view over Taurito and the pool for the smokers. Can comment to much on the entertainment as we didn't watch any, Kids entertainment seemed to lack a little enthusiasm.
I can't advise enough to take a trip or two to Mogan €10 including tip by taxi. a lovely little fishing town around the coast. Go on Friday, Market day. DO haggle! We heard from our rep that people who haggle get given a different coloured carrier bag than those who don't, so other traders know. You WILL get a good deal when haggling. My Fiance get a lovely cardigan, haggled down from €60 to €35. The beach in Mogan is great, sand imported from Caribbean somewhere. You pay for the sunbeds, but only €3 each. Water was fairly cold (but this is just due to time of year)
We went on the Yellow Submarine. €22 each (down from €28, think they were having a quiet day) A good price as not every day do you get to go on a sub and see wrecks and a lot of marine life.
There is a duty free shop in Mogan (WELL worth a visit) if you'rea smoker do NOT buy fags on plane if you plan on visiting Mogan. they are much cheaper here, we bought a local brand CK. only €5.95 for 200!!! Bargin of the century! They are very similar to B&H Silver.
We went to the Rep meeting on the second day. Francis the rep was informative and friendly enough. We booked a trip on the Supercat. do NOT be fooled by the picture of the boat you'll be shown it is NOT the same boat. It's described as "Romantic" and having Sunbeds and Hammocks. On the boat there was NO hammocks and only about 6 Sunbeds (all taken by the time we got on board as our coach was late) Plenty of wooden chairs tho, but not enough cushions to go around. We spent most of the trip on the lower deck at the back of the boat near the Jacuzzi (COLD water!) But we got the sun nicely there. The boat stops at Anfi (More about this later) for you to have a swim or ride the banana boat or hire a Jetski @€25. I did this and it was good fun.
The food on the Supercat wasn't great and was served in a lower deck with not enough seating for everyone.
We also went on a trip to Anfi Del Mar. BE WARNED this IS a Timeshare hardsell! However, if you are tough enough to say NO and mean it, by all means go, as you get paid €45 for going! (which we put towards the Supercat) You do get to spend the whole day there if you wish as the taxi home is paid for, so go, enjoy the beach and say NO! lol!

All in all, a great holiday for the price we paid. we will return to Gran Canaria, but NOT to this hotel, only due to the location.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone with kids in buggies or anyone with mobility issues.
Hiring a car might be a good move for people wanting to see more of the island and aren't scared by cliffside roads.
There is no free wi-fi in the lobby, like a lot of hotels. €9 for a day if you want it. But you won't get it in your room.

“Nice hotel but in the middle of nowhere!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

My partner and I got moved to this hotel at very short notice due to over booking at the Dunas Mirador, and to be fair, I think we got a good deal. We paid £640, but then got £80 back from Thomas cook because of the mix up, Lots of people had been over booked and moved as it turned out.
We arrived after a long flight shoe horned into a Thomas Cook flight, i would not use Thomas Cook again, the flight was torture.
The hotel is very isolated, and up a very steep hill, yes it is walkable, but I would not try and take a buggy up it, the road is in really bad repair, and the footpath is not wide enough to get a buggy, not a problem for us, as no children, but i did feel sorry for folk with little ones.
We were given a room in Block 6...which is as far away from reception and pools as you could get, with a pretty grim view of the roof tops, It was 4 lift journeys and a good bit of walking to find the room, my partner had a broken toe, and reception quickly changed us to block 3, still a bit of a hike but not so bad, so we packed up, lugged the cases up the first 2 lifts, only to discover that the lift to our floor was out of order, one side broken, the other had caught on fire! so up 70 very steep steps to our floor.
The lift was out of order for 3 and a half days, this really spoilt the holiday, you have to be prepared to take everything you need with you when you leave your room, no popping back.
Apart from the lifts being out of order, and these things happen, the room was very pleasant, the bathroom was lovely, with a separate shower, bath, loo, and sink, the rooms were very clean and the sleeping area is large, the beds maybe a bit hard, but not a problem. The balcony looks out over the bay and on to Mogan, which is beautiful. There is no drawers in the room, but plenty of storage none the less.
We went All inclusive, but our room did have the self catering facilities in it, which i think you would struggle to cook and serve up in, very small 2 rings and a sink, no space to dish up, and no kettle, but a pan so you can boil water etc.
The pools are also very clean, infact the hotel is clean and very pleasant, because it was Feb the pools where cold, but that is to be expected too, although we did venture into the family pool. The adult pool looks lovely, and it is quiet up there if you want to chill.
The food was alot better than i had expected, i dont have high expectations for AI food, it is always the same and repeated, but i always found something to eat, and it was tasty, there is a lot of veal and liver served, i dont eat either, so struggled for a main course 1 night, but i still didnt leave hungry.
The pool bar serve lovely burgers if you do struggle at lunch time.
The staff are very friendly.
I am pleased we were AI as the drinks alone would have worked out costly, a coke was 2.10 euros. SO if you are travelling with a family i would suggest you would def save on the AI deal.
We went to the reps meeting, and it was informative, we took a couple of trips, they will offer a free trip to Amfi...be aware this is a time share place, and you will get the hard sell. We wasted a morning here :(
The catamarang trip was ok, but dont be fooled by the picture the rep shows you, and the promise of a romantic trip with sun beds and hammocks, there was about 12 sunbeds, no hammocks, and then lots of wooden garden chairs nailed to the deck, with not enough padded seat covers to go around. We went downstairs and sat on the back of the boat near the jaccuzzi and caught some sun, the food on this trip is not the best, But you do get to see some stunning scenery. You can hire a jet ski for 25 euros, my partner did and really enjoyed it. The cat moors up so you can have a swim too. It was a nice trip but not what was sold to us.
Due to the hassle of the lifts not working, and the remote location, we chose to go into Mogan a few days, you will be told the taxi is 5 euros, it is not, it is about 8 each way, so with tip you are looking at 20 euros to get there and back, but it is beautiful and lots to do down there.
We went on the yellow submarine, it was really good, cost 22 euros each, but not every day you get the chance to go on a sub and see the sea bed and ship wrecks.
The beach at mogan is lovely, you pay for sunbeds 3 euros each, but well worth it.
There is a duty free shop in Mogan, and we got 200 CK cigarettes for 6 euros, they are like benson and hedges silver, a real bargain!
This hotel does not get sunshine until about mid day, which was a real downer, as you can see the taurito princess across the bay baking in the morning sunshine.
All in all the holiday was good, and the hotel was lovely, but not suitable if you have any health problems, it is on the side of a cliff, and i cant stress enough about all the stairs and crazy lift lay out. The weather was lovely, we have come back tanned, we only had one gloomy day, and it cleared the skies for a lovely sunny hot day.
There is internet there, and wi fi but its not free, also there is only CNN on the tv in english, admittedly we dont go on holiday to watch tv, but if you want to watch some in the evening, you would struggle.
Best advice is try and request a room in block 1 or 2 to save all the hassles of the mad lay out. The hotel shop is expensive, go down to the Cala Blanca just about 50 yards down the hill, their shop is much cheaper :)
Overall you will have a nice time, and you could do a lot worse than this hotel.

“Wonderful view, beautiful rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

I stayed one week in january at the Mogan Princess aparthotel with my fiancé. The room was very clean and very nice, though not the most comfortable. The worst problem was the lack of equipment in the kitchenette, we actually ended up buying our own pot in the supermarket as the one provided was far too small even to cook some pasta. Staff is friendly but not terribly helpful: once the reception staff failed to notify us that a taxi was waiting, and thus brought us into a quite unneccessary argument with the taxi driver. The animation staff was very young and quite unenthusiastic. The area of Taurito is beautiful but little exploited and there is not much to do. We rented a car and that was probably this holiday's best decision! We managed to move around a lot and saw places were the tour operators will certainly not take you. However, don't risk Playa de la Veneguera if you are not very well acquinted with the local tow truck man, Antonio...:) The road is very bad (and it doesn't help letting the car keys take a bath). All together, I recommend the hotel for anyone who wants a very relaxing stay: the view is as beautiful as it seems on the fotos.
