We booked 1 night at Culgower House purely as a stopover point after arriving on the evening ferry from Orkney and wanting to get a few kilometers under our belt to reduce the long drive to Aberdeen the next day. We were therefore extremely pleasantly surprised at what a superb property this turned out to be. It was very easy to find as access is directly off the mainroad, but set far enough back not to suffer from any road noise. As the road is very close to the coast we had lovely views out to the water as the sun set. Culgower House is set in extensive grounds with beautifully maintained gardens. It has been extensively refurbished throughout, maintaining the historic feel to the house with clean uncluttered decor.
We stayed in "Garty", a large king bedded room with huge modern ensuite. Black out curtains allowed us to sleep despite the never ending twilight. Fresh flowers and home made shortbread along with a selection of teas/coffees were welcoming. There is plenty of room for suitcases, a wardrobe if you need to hang clothes, a large flat screen TV and writing desk.
The ensuite has a full size bath and separate shower so no having to climb into the bath to have a shower. Beautiful toiletries including local hand made soap and large fluffy towels were available.
As we were arriving late from the ferry we prebooked supper for our arrival. This is where Catriona's cullinary skills first came to our attention. She produced hearty flavoursome soup made with their homegrown vegetables, rolls with fresh ham cheese and homemade relish and a cheese platter featuring a range of local cheeses. The food was all delicious and plentiful. We couldn't eat it all. The meal was served in the beautifully decorated dining room complete with candles. Tea and coffee were later served in the lounge room while we chatted with John and Catriona.
Breakfast the next morning was superb, with a wide selection of fresh and cooked options to choose from (fill out the request sheet the evening before). I had porridge which was smooth and silky with fresh fruits atop it. There were other cereals, yoghurts and fresh fruits available on the sideboard. I also had the smoked haddock and poached egg, something I'd never tried before - it was wonderful. My husband had the full Scottish breakfast including black pudding, something I had no desire to try, which he declared outstanding. We were joined for breakfast by an American couple and ended up leaving much later than we planned as we were enjoying our lingering breakfast and conversation so much.
Culgower House definitely deserves it's four star rating. We would happily stay there again and would recommend it to anyone either visiting the area or just passing through as we were.
