“A Destination in Itself”

Quite a nice place tucked up in the Ligurian mountains next to the tiny mountaintop village of Triora. Clean, up-to-date rooms, and a big, comfortable lobby with overstuffed chairs for lounging around. Lots of outdoor terrace space to enjoy the marvelous views over the valley.

Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Not everyone speaks English, but everything worked out just fine. Food emphasizes hearty and traditional rather than haute cuisine. Breakfast included the local Triora bread. No dinner menu, dinner was served by the full staff from a buffet line. Individual name cards for guests at dinner were a nice touch. A few of us who were out on the terrace just before dinner were greeted by staff who offered us a sip of local sparkling wine as an apéro before eating, very nice indeed.

Town is an easy walk up the hill. Triora is not large, you can see the whole thing in an afternoon. The views on the other side are great as well. Town is maybe an hour or more up winding roads from the coast, not difficult to get to from San Remo.

On checking out, I got a friendly suggestion from staff that if I liked my stay, I could consider posting a review to TripAdvisor. Well, here you go. Not a problem, I would have anyway.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, not all have the spectacular views, possibly worth asking ahead if that's im...

“Tango heaven in paradise Triora!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

We loved staying here for an Argentine Tango weekend (they have one every last-weekend in May, and 2012 is already lined-up with Buenos Aires tango dancer, tango film-maker & author of tango books, Chan Park, so we shall be back then) and it was perhaps the best holiday we have had in over 25 years! A local organizes English-Italian "Tango Argentino" long weekends and all activity happens at this medieval monastery, now a 'bella' mountain hotel. Great food! Lots of space, free WiFi and views to die for. It is located at the entrance to a mysterious medieval village, once a middle ages citadel of great repute, where you will be lost in time. Only 35 minutes to the sea too! 100 stars out of 100.

Room Tip: Fitness Centre not needed as Triora is a fitness centre! A 10 minute walk around those hilly streets...

“Lots of character, and a beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

This was an interesting and unexpected place -- a nice hotel right where we needed it! We really liked it’s position in the valley, up and away from the busy Mediterranean seaside, and had fun walking through all of Triora’s narrow passages. This medieval village has such fascinating history, with the witch trials and world war and various uses of the hotel. I have to give the family a LOT of credit for continuing to run Colomba D’Oro, it’s a huge old building and must be incredibly costly to operate/maintain (yet rooms are still quite reasonably priced). Everyone was really friendly, the family were gracious hosts, and the staff seemed to be on hand all the time.

The rooms are unique: it felt more like being in a mountain chalet than in a hotel. Kind of Spartan, but plenty comfortable and with a lot of character (and a fantastic view!)

The food options in Triora are virtually non-existent, so dinner in the hotel is really your only choice. It was about $35 per adult, not including wine. There was a LOT of food (all you can eat - mostly a buffet). We’d heard that years ago Colomba D’Oro served a 25-30 course dinner, but I think it’s down to just 15-20 now. Glad we only stayed one night or we would have felt like the money was a lot (and would probably have gained a couple pounds too!)

The rooms on the top floor are not as quiet as you would expect. The view is great though!

“Will help to sustain our souls for years to come.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

Our hosts Simona and Pier were friendly, warm and inviting. We took the full board option with two of our midday meals in the form of a hamper which we enjoyed while walking through the breathtaking mountains. The meals were superb largely of local produce, enjoyed with local wine while we watched the mood of the town change as the day faded into night. The view from our balcony was nothing short of spectacular.
We were train travellers arriving from Sanremo by local bus. Only 3 euro for the two of us!
Our stay at Colomba D'oro will help to sustain our souls for many years to come.
