“An absolute gem ! Great location, fantastic room and wonderful hostess”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2010

We stayed for a week at Great Seaside in July and were given a warm welcome by Amanda. Great Seaside is genuinely just 5 mins from the beach - no tour operator hype ! For the week that we were there the beach was normally pretty empty. Although it is a pebble beach, there are rock pools and sand at low tide - plenty to keep children occupied. Branscombe is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and we would thoroughly recommend a short walk along the cliff paths either to the village or more further afield to Beer to really appreciate the Jurassic coast line. Lyme Regis, Sidmouth and Beer are just a stones throw away and are all worthy of a visit.

Great Seaside itself is 16th century farm house with lots of original features - the massive fireplace, the thick walls and (unsurprisingly) the smaller than 20th century door openings as mentioned in one of the other reviews.

The family room itself is huge and extremely comfortable with the shower room / bathroom just next door. Every thing was immaculate and, being a frequent business traveller, there are many hotels that could learn from Amanda and her small team on how to properly clean and service rooms. Breakfast was great - fresh bread, plenty of cereals, orange juice, yoghurts, a wonderful cooked breakfast and excellent coffee. It was impossible to leave the table feeling empty.

For an evening meal we would recommend the Masons Arms (book ahead !) which is an easy 10 minute walk away. They had a full menu, plus a childrens menu and a wide selection of beers and wines, at a very reasonable price.

At the end of our week, none of us wanted to come home. An incredibly relaxing holiday and we hope to go back soon.

“Excellent B & B in a Wonderful Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2010

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights at the begining of June. The B & B is a very pretty thatched cottage in a wonderful location, close to Branscombe beach and the coastal footpath, and surrounded by wonderful countryside. Very clean and attractive rooms with exposed stone walls. There is also a lovely lounge and dining area with an inglenook fireplace. The service was very good and you had the option of either a continental or english breakfast. Whilst the English breakfast was very nice I did feel the portions were rather small.

Whilst we had a very enjoyable stay, there is one thing I would like to comment on. The door to our room was very low and the moment we arrived I hit my head very hard on the top of the door. I am of average height, 5,10" and you would think that after hitting my head once I would of learnt my lesson and not done it again....not so. I must of hit my head at least half a dozen times. At first I couldn't work out why I kept hitting my head when I was ducking each time to go under the door. Then one day whilst standing outside the door looking down at the floor, the penny dropped...the bedroom floor is actually higher than the floor in the halway. There is very small step, maybe 1 and half to 2 inches high but as it is covered in carpet it is not obvious. Naturally the brain can only compensate for things it is aware of and therefore when I was ducking I was not ducking enough to allow for the small step. Guess what, once I realised this I never hit my head again. Now I'm not normally one for complaining, but this door is plain dangerous. After day 2 I head a very sore head. I did mention this to the owner Amanda, and suggested she put a 'mind your head sign' above the door and point out there is a small step to her customers. It will be very interesting to see if Amanda does anything about it. I do hope so because she runs a wonderful B & B but the door is clearly a hazard.

Sore head aside, we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend Great Seaside B & B.

“Excellent B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend. The hostess Amanda was very friendly and extremely helpful. The room was very lovely, very clean and tidy---a contrast to when we stayed at a 5 star hotel in Bournemouth. The breakfast was delicious and the service just right.
The village itself is very pretty and there were 2 very scenic coastal walks, very hilly all round but breathtaking views. Cash is required in some ot the National Trust porperties which nearly caught us out as the village is small and very rural without a cash point.
We found the Fountain Head Inn more suited to our culinary taste and the walk there and back made us feel better at the very large portions!

“Faultless B and B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2009

We stayed for 9 whole days in July and in spite of fairly miserable weather we had a lovely time ; having stayed in the area a few times and having relatives in Branscombe itself we know the area pretty well and can thoroughly recommend it for all ages and our visit coincided with the Branscombe airshow which was a really lovely day out. The Great Seaside is really well located even for those without cars as you can walk a few hundred yards to the beach and its excellent beach cafe/general store (although the opening hours are a little limiting) Branscombe has two really excellent dining pubs with great beers and cider, our favourite the Fountains head and the slightly less rustic and a little more pretentious Masons Arms as well as the National trust Tea rooms also run by the Bentleys. I can also recommend the bracing but beautiful walk over the cliffs to Beer which is only a couple of miles and where some more great pubs await you.
We took all the rooms in the house and found them, the housekeeping, breakfasts and in particular the hospitality of the owners to be absolutely outstanding in every way and we would be very happy to recommend Great Seaside to anyone

“Just right!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2009

Oct 2009. Had very pleasant, relaxing stay. Highlights:
1.The beach, near enough to get to with deckchairs, picnics, books etc or for the less energetic you can drive down, there is a public car park with WCs and also a cafe with quite a good menu. Beach is pebbly, so no castle-building, but still a very pleasant spot
2. The breakfasts, of which we never tired!
3. The stroll to the National Trust Tea Shop
4. The thatched cottages
5. Visiting the nearby Donkey Sanctuary
