“Quiet Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

Very well furnished, good breakfast, and quiet. The owners are very wellcoming and make you feel at home. Ample parking in courtyard, and no need to use car as walks are nearby, and local bus service is 5 mins away. Good food available at the Mason Arms, and try the Branscombe Bitter!
This is not a working farm, but a NT property close to the pebble beach and walkways.
Will definately visit again soon.

“Great B&B, Great Seaside”

We had a lovely short break in this 16C stone thatched cottage close to the beach. Our accommodation was ideal for a family. We had two rooms cosily tucked into the eaves of this historic building with a generously proportioned bathroom off the landing in between. The decor was tasteful and fresh, an eclectic mix of antiques and shaker-style furniture.

Our hostess, Amanda, was friendly and helpful, assisting us by making bookings at the two pubs in Branscombe, The Masons Arms and the Fountain Head. We enjoyed the English Breakfast in the cosy guest Dining/Living Room which must be lovely in winter when the fire is lit in the inglenook fireplace.

The B&B is a short walk down the hill to the shingled beach, which has a pleasant thatched cafe and shop called the Sea Shanty. There is a small works site dedicated to the final clear up of the Napoli container ship which foundered off the coast, but we did not find this particularly intrusive. In fact the whole Napoli
incident has moved into local lore and we found it quite intriguing and entertaining to hear stories of the booty/salvage haul - almost like a return to the Devon Coast smuggling roots. The beach itself has been cleared and is spotless.

There is a lovely tea house in the Old Bakery, a fifteen minute walk away along a country path with an inviting menu and the admonishment not too feed the dog, a laid-back red setter who had apparently read the rules too, as he did not try his luck.

The B&B is situated very near the South West Coastal Path, part of the World Heritage Coast and the walk to Beer is recommended.

“Really good bed and breakfast in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2008

This B & B has just opened (I think) and is located in a National Trust owned Farmhouse. It is in a great location really close to Branscombe beach and within walking distance of some good pubs. The building itself is hundreds of years old, but has been refurbed to provide a really good, spotless, b & b.

The gardens around were full of beautiful plants and a magnificent walnut tree.

For couples, there are two good bedrooms and private bathrooms, but for families there is a room specifically for children - across from one of the adult bedrooms, and sharing the bathroom. All are furnished to a high standard - using Laura Ashley fabrics I think. Ours had Freeview and flat screen tv

There is a large comfortable lounge available for guests - with huge fireplace.

Breakfast was very relaxed - quite straight forward, well prepared and served in the lounge

The atmosphere was very relaxed and informal (with a well mannered big hairy dog!).

I recommend this place - its a bit dear but its really worth it. I can't think of a better environment for families - privacy for the grown ups and a safe fun space for the kids. And it would be equally good for couples seeking a quiet bolt hole!
