We stumbled on this B&B as we headed to Wexford after our near disasterous visit to Wicklow, we were hoping for a better reception from the previous evening and our friends wanted to enjoy an Irish Family, and on this occasion we were not disappointed Iris welcomed us with open arms. Tea & home made cake was offered and we were delighted to accept, the house was warm & welcoming obviously great pride is taken by this family and the service they offer is excellent, breakfast next morning was a selection of all kinds of everything and we were so pleased we sugggested to the american friends that we stay another night and tour the remember of Wexford & Waterford from there, the rooms were serviced and fresh towels & additional tea & coffee were put into our rooms. Our faith in the Irish B&B was restored and our american friends got to experience at first hand an irish fmaily B&B.
My wife and I stayed with Iris at Birchwood House, Wexford for two nights B&B In August. We decided to explore the Southeast and stay in Ireland this year. We were overwhelmed with Iris's cheerfulness, efficiency, and amazing house on our arrival. An offer of tea or coffee and homemade cake straight away set us at ease, and was most welcome. Our room was bright, airy, spotless and had everything we needed. The beautiful garden with an amazing feature was just wonderful. Her advice on local restaurants and places to see were spot on. Later we had a restfull night's sleep with no noise from traffic as the house is 500 metres from the main road. For breakfast, we were truly spoilt for choice. We had a choice of 6 breakfast options. She's a fabulous cook. She was a most considerate and an excellent host. In fact, my wife and I have decided, when we're back in Wexford, to stay with Iris at Birchwood House to be treated in a very special way again.
This is a nice B&B however there was a feeling of being very regimented beneath the surface. This was the only B&B on our trip (7 B&Bs in total) where you had to register. You also have to pick a timeslot for breakfast. If your preferred slot has already been taken then you need to select another time. On the registration form it does request payment the night before departure - although we did pay the morning we left.
The B&B is situated on a quiet road which is in easy walking distance to Castlebridge. The food at the Fordes Bar/Restaurant was lovely.
The room was clean and quiet. The electric shower proved challenging in the morning as it was unable to maintain a constant temperature - either being scalding hot or cold. Seemingly selecting a cooler setting of 3 instead of 5 works better.
Breakfast was nice. With Iris preparing and cooking the breakfasts on her own, the timeslots are there to make it easier for her.
Iris certainly provided a great recommendation for a walk - Ravenswood Loop. Without her directions we wouldn't have found it and it was certainly worth the trip!
Although nice, I wouldn't stay at this B&B again.
We knew immediately that we had made the right choice. Birchwood is lovely, peaceful and ideally situated just minutes from restaurants and bars in Castlebridge. On arrival Iris made us feel so welcome and served us tea and delicious homemade fruitcake in her delightful lounge. Our room on the ground floor was large, comfortable, well equipped and tastefully decorated with a spacious en suite shower room. Iris's aristic skills and her attention to detail make Birchwood exceptional.
Breakfast was tasty, beautifully cooked and presented, and with all Iris's homemade produce including preserves, prepared fruits, and delicious granary/seeded bread, we were offered a great and varied choice each day. There was plenty of tourist information at Birchwood and also Iris was extremely generous with her time in passing on her local knowledge amd recommendations, which proved so helpful when planning our holiday. On leaving Birchwood after a memorable four days, we felt we were saying goodbye to an old friend. We look forward to returning next year and have no hesitation in recommending this out standing B & B
