This is a traveller hotel...nothing fancy, but good value for money and in a very convenient location! It's a 10 minute stroll from the bus station, on the right down Thekkady Rd, before you get to Thekkady Junction (so there are plenty of shops and places to eat) and it's about a 20min rickshaw ride to Periyar Reserve. We had a deluxe non-AC room, which seemed pretty basic, but perfectly ok. There was hot water, a fan, a tv and a reasonably comfortable bed. We put up our own mosquito net, just incase. It was quite noisy during the day because of music being played through speakers on the street, but we were't around much during the day and it stopped at night, so we didn't have trouble sleeping. There's an internet cafe in the hotel, which is handy and a tourist office down the road at the Rolex Tourist Home. The guy on teh desk was incredibly helpful and even stepped in to translate for us when we were having trouble arranging our next hotel by phone.
Other recommendations in the area. We did the 3 hr walking tour in the Park and really recommend it. But get there for the first tour at 7, because it get's really hot later on. For good cheap food, try the vegetarian cafe at the Lake Queen Hotel at the Junction. Great lunch time Thali! We saw a martial arts display at the Kerala Kalari Centre, which was great and did a Spice Tour (booked through Rolex), which was very personal and quite an experience! Basically a rickshaw driver with very unusual english, bountiful enthusiasm and probably a degree in horticulture, took the 2 of us out for a couple of hours and told us everything we could ever want to know about the spices and crops of Kerala.
