“Too Resort-y for my taste”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

The Rio Mar Beach Resort is fine for people looking for the resort experience. The pool is great, it's right on the beach, and the rooms are fine. El Yunque National Forest is very close, which is the best hing about it. The spa is good. It just doesn't offer an authentic experience of the culture. I could have been in Miami or Ft. Myers.

“Great Golf, Pool & Beach destination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Went for a couple of days of great golf and was not disappointed. It was easy to find the hotel shuttle service at the airport and they did a very good job for the $75 round trip. The one van was nearly full so they rolled out another for me and a couple so as to not make us wait.

The hotel is about an hour ride from San Juan with light traffic. It has two really nice 18 hole golf courses adjacent to the hotel, the Ocean and River courses. The beach side pools provided a nice place to relax in the afternoon, I didn't use the beach so can’t comment on the quality of the sand and water, it looked very pretty. My daily routine was morning run around the property, golf, flop at the adult pool and read then a light dinner and drinks at the lobby lounge. Everyone was friendly and had no trouble making conversation even though I was alone. It being school season in the US there were not many children and no teens, so it was fairly sedate around the hotel. It was either young couples with no children or just infants & toddlers, or mature singles and couples with grown children, The hotel was only about half full so it seemed that most of the restaurants in the hotel were on limited schedules or not open at all at night. No dancing or music, (except Friday night they had a show, but I was not there on a Friday). I didn't really focus on the activities in the area and did not have a car. The hotel room was clean but it is not a brand new hotel and the rooms and bathrooms were starting to show some wear. I had a corner mini-suite with a great view of the ocean and a nice outside balcony. The bed was very comfortable. The two chairs and a table on the balcony were very basic and the balcony was very bare, no plants or flowers, but the view of the ocean was spectacular. The lobby bar and the small casino were about it for night life.
My goal was to just go and relax for a couple of days so a daily routine of going for a morning run around the property (the beach sand even at low tide is much too soft to run on, so that running option was out, but it would be a nice walk) , play golf and sat by the pool, I did not rent a cabana, always got a nice spot a chair poolside but I could see that at full capacity it would be more difficult to procure a spot. The poolside drinks run about $10.00.

All in all it was a quiet and relaxing experience with no problems experienced. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 6th or 7th floor with an ocean view.

“We're not "resort" people, but this was pretty good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We usually avoid these kinds of remote golf-tennis resorts like the plague. I was a little dismayed that we'd checked ourselves into this place that was pretty far from San Juan. And the check-in wasn't great. There was quibbling about "ocean view" vs "ocean front." We had "ocean view" which meant there was a slim view of the water, and a larger view of some other rooms. All rooms have balconies, but with "ocean front" you are pretty much looking at other people's balconies. We changed rooms twice. In the first room there was a bad odor of cigarettes (although it is a non-smoking hotel) and we found cigarette butts on the balcony. The 2nd room was a junior suite that was huge and the bedroom had no window, just doors to the living room. The third room was very nice. A warning for people with small kids: my husband set the inner lock to "privacy" when he was in the shower, because he thought it activated the "do not disturb" button for the maid. In fact, it meant that I could not get in with my key! the cleaning staff helped me pound on the door until he heard us. I told the concierge that it was very dangerous for people with kids and he agreed.
The valet parking service was very good. The hotel is so close you can see El Yunque, the rain forest, and I recommend getting the breakfast included, because it is very good. One oddity: they were reluctant to seat us outside since it meant that they could not manage whose breakfast was included and whose was extra. It was disappointing to eat indoors in air conditioning when it was a beautiful 80-degree day in January.

Room Tip: Be sure when you book that you select Ocean Front (more expensive) if that is important to you.

“Amazing trip!...Also pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

My overall experience of Puerto Rico was amazing! Even the resort was beautiful and I loved the friendly service, but when it came to dining at the Japanese restaurant I ended up paying around $87 for three plates, two miso soups, plus drinks and tip. Another expense is taking a taxi; those were the most expensive so I would advise you to rent a car instead. Oh plus, there are hardly any stores or restaurants around the resort so the best way to get around is by car. The best car rental is The World Car Rental in Fajardo and the prices are decent, better than the prices at the rental place in the resort. Oh yeah, remember, if you drive at night, from 12:00am-5:00am you do not have to stop at red lights, you can treat it as a Stop sign.

Make sure to book your tours at the resort with Butterfly Tours. They are the best! There is a casino so if you are 18 yrs. old make sure to bring your ID! I played the 25 cent slots and I won $430! I had remembered that I loved this flowered print dress at one of the boutique stores in the resort and went to purchase it with my winnings. =) Plus, the resort has fun activities for all ages during the day like bingo, feeding iguanas, volleyball, jogging, and much more. Also, make sure to enjoy a fresh cold coconut by the beach or the pool when you stay at the resort because it sure relaxed me! =D

Room Tip: If you are not a smoker, ask for a non-smoking floor right away. When we got there we asked for a su...
