My wife and our two teenagers (19 & 17} spent two nights at the Arctic Getaway. One night on the way to Prudhoe Bay and another on the way back. We stayed in the wonderful Koyokuk cabin. Plenty of room for all with private rooms for the kids. We had a small kitchen and had brought food from Fairbanks as suggested by Uta. Worked out perfectly. Breakfeast is served in Igloo #8s dinning room. Eggs and sourdough pancakes..Very good. If you can get Berni to tell you the story of the bear hide in the corner it's a thriller you'll be repeating to all your friends when you get home!
We walked around the small town and met half the people who reside there. Bob showed us the cemetery and had a number of great stories too! Some were pretty sad but it was a great insight into the life of people who call the Alaskan wilderness home.
On the return trip our Tahoe was sooooo dirty from the Dalton Highway it was difficult to see out the windows. Leo {Uta and Bernis' son} offered to wash it for us but the family was heading out to pan for gold {wow} so Berni gave us a bucket and brush and we headed to the "carwash"...the Koyokuk river. Best carwash ever!
If you're driving the Dalton and need a place to stay..this is the place. Take the time to explore and meet the residents. It'll be a memory you'll cherish.
