“An average hotel with potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

On arrival the hotel exterior, lobby and bar areas looked very nice with Christmas decorations making it seem very seasonal and cosy. We were shown to our attic room but had to ask for info about breakfast times, late entry arrangements etc. There didn't seem to be any further info in our room about the hotel, restaurant or bar except for general info about the hotel chain's Christmas and New Year offers. Although the room was spacious and clean, there was paper peeling off the ceilings, signs of damp round the bathroom and some dated fixtures and fittings. The shower was particularly disappointing with very weak pressure. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable with nice bedding and the room was warm and well lit with a good number of ppts for charging phones etc. I personally felt the rooms were a little bit overpriced overall, given how visible some of the problems were.

Breakfast in the morning was good, and we were served by a friendly member of staff who also helped us check out. It was OK, but just lacked the attention to detail I would expect from the price.

“Friendly & comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Stayed for just one night in November - the main thing was that the heating was capable. We had two rooms, one double and one twin and we took 2 dogs though we ended up paying extra for these despite declaring these when we booked and thought we had paid in full up front. Still, I'm quibbling really.

Very comfortable bar with some decent malt whiskeys and wines - the menu looked good too but we had already eaten so didn't try it. There is also a restaurant.

Breakfast was very good, I tested them with poached eggs and they passed. Music was awful though - I love music but even I don't need it at breakfast. Actually I heard the music coming from the restaurant the previous evening - sounds as if they had borrowed a customer's MP3 player.

It's a good location and there are loads of pubs around too. We would go back (in fact my wife and daughter stayed there for a few nights in the summer)

“Very friendly and enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We stayed here for 3 nights in October with our two golden retrievers. On arrival we were given a very warm welcome, shown to our room which had recently been refurbished, was spacious and very clean. Kath really did make us all feel welcome, evidently a dog owner herself. We were given directions to the beach and told that the dogs were welcome in the hotel, including the bar/lounge. We were given the option of eating breakfast and dinner in either the bar (with dogs) or the restaurant, at no time were we made to feel that the dogs (and there were quite a few in residence this week) were unwelcome. We ate in the resataurant three times, the food was of a high standard; the chef is also to be commended for being so accommodating- we requested plain chicken for one meal and were given a choice of vegetables and potatoes. All of the staff were very friendly and hard working; the hotel was full and so staff were very busy, 'J and G', the owners perhaps could consider a budget increase to allow for more staff at busy times, the staff were constantly on the go. Kath with her husband/partner and all staff members have obviously worked very hard to ensure the hotel is of a high standard; yes there were a few minor hiccoughs, but they bent over backwards to rectify them. We really enjoyed our stay, we appreciated the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and hope to return soon.

“Ignore Trip Advisor anoraks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Having spent two enjoyable days at Warkworth House and having read previous reviews I have to say I am not sure where previous contributors had stayed. The room was comfortable, excellent breakfast and good location. Also having just watched a documentary on TV with an irritating, boring bunch of Trip Advisor "critics" I now realise that these reviews hardly present a balanced set of opinions.
