We stayed one night recently on a spur-of-the-moment trip having not booked ahead. The hotel could be lovely, it's in a great position, right opposite the castle, and it seemed quite busy, with a birthday party in the restaurant in the evening (we didn't eat in there, so can't comment on the food). The floors up to our room were the creakiest I've ever walked on, but at least being on the second floor meant we had a good view of the castle and it was quiet. The room was poorly lit, only one bedside lamp which is really annoying, and the mattress too soft - just bearable for one night. At least there was a tea/coffee tray and the tv worked, but the bathroom was badly in need of updating, lots of discoloured grouting and I could not get the shower to work at a pleasant temperature.
The breakfast room was nice, and the cooked breakfasts tasty and well cooked, but overall we felt we'd overpaid at £85.
