Stayed one night on spec travelling north. Great village with wonderful riverside walks, superb castle and friendly folk. A very friendly welcome from young lady doubling as bar person and receptionist showed us to a clean unpretentious double room with en suite shower etc. Nothing amazing about it but nothing wrong although it may be a bit unintentionally retro for picky guests. Cost for the room including full English breakfast (good it was too) was £80 which is possibly a bit high for mid November and the standard of the room.
We were informed that there was 'live music' later in the bar and although most tables were booked we could reserve in the restaurant. The unintentional 70's retro theme was carried through to the menu, yet despite our forebodings we were treated to some of the best seared king scallops for our starter that we have ever tasted, although the incongruous salad garnish was an irrelevance. Then having decided to get into the spirit of things food wise we ordered steaks rare. Perfectly cooked, tender to the point of butteryness and huge, they were simply superb. Forgettable accompaniments apart from decent handcut chips we ate the lot. Going the whole hog literally we even had puddings - the only real mistake. Friendly service too. Repairing to the bar we found the barman very amenable, efficient and organised and apart from an alarmingly soft collapsed bench seat just to the right of the entrance door, enjoyed the rest of the evening including the singer with a selection of Jennings ales, all well kept but none really a wow. The atmosphere was very comfortable, the locals well-behaved and out to enjoy the evening without the usual loutish drunken behaviour that characterises most towns on a Friday night. In short we had a great night, met some agreeable friendly people and would like to stay again as a stopover. The landlord himself is rather taciturn and short of charm, but the staff compensate well.
