Transportation and guide from Vientiane to Pakse, Laos

Can anyone recommend a good way and guide to take us from Vientiane to Pakse over a 2 day 1 night period on 2nd and 3rd February 2012 (this week). Unfortunately there are no flights available and we have to find an alternative way to get there. We are not too keen on an overnight bus particularly the bed bus.

Any suggestions and recommendations would be welcomed.

No flights? there are daily flights from Vientiane to Pakse. Are they booked out?

If there are no flights and you don't want to go by bus then it'll be expensive. There is an english speaking taxi driver who likes taking people on longer trips but you'll have to book him in advance. It'll probably cost you $150 per day. His number is 020 5528 1300.

You could stop in Thakhek for the night after day 1 and then stop in Savannakhet for lunch on day 2.

Thanks for information.. Good news is that we went to a travel agents this morning and they managed to secure us two seats on the early morning flight after making a phone call to someone. We have the tickets so will be in Pakse early Thursday morning.

We now have to find a guide who could take us on a 2 day trip up to the Bolaven plateau.

Has anyone any names of recommended guides or travel agents.

The Langkham guesthouse has a popular travel agent.

Most people just travel round the Boloven plateau without a guide - the roads are good and there are plenty guesthouses and restaurants along the way. A popular way to do it is rent a motorbike from Pakse, but if you don't fancy that you can hire a car/driver once you get there.
