Going to Canary Island on Honeymoon...

We are going to the Canary Islands for our Honeymoon in October 2010, what is the best/most cost effective all -inclusive resort to stay in that offers pickup/dropoff service to the airport? Or if that is not an option, what is the best hotel to stay in that is in close walking proximity to everything (the beach, restaurants, etc.)

thanks!

We haven't decided which island yet..we are in our early 30's and would like a relaxing all-inclusive hotel overlooking the beach, just a lazy vacation with not much planned accept fun in the sun, maybe a few tourist attractions or a trip to see one of the volcanoes. If anyone has any preference for which island is best for that ~ and easiest on American tourist :o) we'd love any advice at all!

We are coming from New York, so if you have flight info on the best airline or travel agent who could plan it, that is also appreciated.

Are you flying to the UK first, or flying directly to Spain? I think you would have to fly to the Canaries via Madrid from the US, but if you are visiting another European country first, then they will no doubt have direct flights.

Madrid looks like it is going to be our best option, we were not planning on visiting any places in Europe first, just spend the whole time on the islands. thanks!

What date in October are you planning on going to the Canaries? What has made you choose the Canaries?

The Canary Islands are a good destination for Europeans wanting some winter sun as they have a good year round climate. However, I am curious as to why you want to come all the way from the US?

If you are coming at the beginning of October IMHO there are more interesting places to visit in Europe other than the Canaries.

Please do tell any other places that would be great for a beach Honeymoon. The reason we chose Canary Islands is because we did a search for any location that is within a 10 hour flight of New York, and that has all inclusive resorts and is on a beach that is warm enough to swim in October, and Canary Islands came up as the number one choice. Before that, I'm afraid we never even heard of it (gotta love us Americans!). I've been to Italy and Capri, Austria and Germany, but not Spain, so if you can tell of a better location that has nice beaches that is not in the Caribbean, we would really appreciate it! thanks so much!

I'm not trying to put you off the Canaries as I spent 13 years living there and had some of the best times of my life. I lived and worked in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

It's just that I think there are better places to visit if coming all the way from the US. Many years ago there were a lot of American visitors i the Canaries as it was an add on after visitin other parts of Spain. These days there are very few. The majority of tourists are Europeans. Also, be aware that the resorts in the Canaries are nothing like the Caribbean, they are extremely commercialised and over developed and have lost any Spanish atmosphere. In the main resorts you will find plenty of British, Irish, Dutch, German, Scandinavian etc....bars and restaurants, but will be hard pushed to find any good Spanish places.

Last year I went to Puglia in southern Italy in mid October and loved it. The weather was very good, about 25-30C during the day, but cooler at night. We stayed in Alberobello, which is very central and a World Heritage site. You could combine a visit with maybe, Rome or Naples. Sicily would also be warm at the beginning of October.

Morocco would also have good weather. Look at the possibility of staying in a Riad. There are loads of websites as they have become very popular. You could combine say, Marrakech with Essouaira and a visit to the Atlas mountains.

Southern Spain and Portugal would be quite warm at the beginning of October. You could visit Madrid and then have time somewhere like the Costa de la Luz and also visit Seville and Granada.

Another option a bit further afield would be Egypt. I went to Luxor last year and am going back again this year. You could have some time in Luxor visiting the sites and spend a week in one of the Red Sea resorts, t will be hot in October.

Now, I know you are looking for all inclusive resorts and you will only find them in Spain, Portugal and Egypt out of the places that I have mentioned, but why don't you have Half Board in a hotel and try some of the local restaurants. In Egypt I would only do BB as it is very cheap.

Hope this gives you some food for thought
