 Jambiani Beach?!

I will be visiting Zanzibar in November, and was going to stay on the north east coast however am quite interested in the Blue Oyster Hotel which I just realised is in Jambiani, further down the coast. I read that there is a lot of seaweed that washes up on the shore - does this ruin the whole white sand effect?!

Hi,

These seaweeds are every where in Zanzibar Coasts:

These does not effect the whitesandy beach.

The Beach at Jambiani is a purely white sandy beach, the only problem is tide. But seaweeds do not effect Holidays.

Seaweeds is among of the main product for villagers and used as Export business to China and other Asian Countries.

So,Seaweeds are planted in plans, not like those which are growing and come from the bush.

Regards,

Seaweed doesn't wash up on the beach and is hardly a problem when swimming. The village is quite large (in a strip several kms long behind the hotels/houses fronting the beach), with several primary schools and a secondary school. There is a post office and a good number of small shops. The Blue Oyster Hotel is very clean and well run with friendly, attentive staff. We spent 10 days there in August and are going back next year (2010). The area has a dreamy quality and is surprisingly quiet, ideal if you want to chill out. The beach is stunning and very clean. Around high tide the swimming is excellent. Captain Zappy (based at the hotel) hires his boat (an ugalawa) and crew for fishing, snorkelling or just relaxing trips around the lagoon. Hope this is some help - enjoy your stay.

Just came back from a fourteen day stay in Jambiani! For me the best place ever! The seaweed is grown by the people for export to China. But no worries...plenty of sand, beautifull sandbanks, and the water is just amazing!! We stayed in a private house, with our own caretaker. A very good idea if you are a family of 8 persons. We wanted to be a part of Jambiani, and then a private house is ofcourse the best way to get involved in the village. We played football with the locals, went to school to sing with te children, and had long conversations with the amazing friendly people of Jambiani. Hopefully you will enjoy it just as much as I did!
