Fishing in Port Angeles and surrounding area

We will be in the area soon. Many in our group enjoy leisurely fishing....any recommendations? Most of the guys like to pick up their fishing poles and head out on their own.... I don't think they are interested in hooking up with a guide each time they want to venture out for a bit of fishing. They may want to do a dayt of chartered fishing...but I'm sure they also would like to pick up their poles and head off for an hour or two of fishing before heading out for the day or upon returning from the day's itinerary.

Thanks.

Fishing is a touchy subject here. The State of WA heavily regulates fishing, and the feds regulate fishing inside ONP. You need to be aware of the sometimes arcane regulations, and you need to have a license. You can't just wander off with a pole and start fishing in one of the rivers or lakes. If your relatives want to fish, they should contact a guide. I can recommend one.

The Strait of San Juan de Fuca - that large body of water between PA and Victoria - is known for fishing. You need a boat, hence a charter.

Overall, I have found it hard to figure out how to fish in a new area without doing some research or going out with a guide. Washington is unusual because even the fish in rivers are only around at certain times of year.

Be sure to get both WA state and NPS fishing permits.

In addition to river, lake and sound fishing (all completely different from each other), you can also seasonally dig for clams and trap shrimp and crab.

Have read your posts. So, why *not* do a touristy thing? Walk on the Coho ferry to Victoria. You apparently have the time, and you don't have either the Strait or Victoria, much less Canada, where you live.

Yes, we have planned to take the ferry into Canada. We were in Victoria two years back for a brief port stop on a cruise. It is a lovely town. Someone actually mentioned something called "sookie potholes" for our group of teens....any ideas on that would be appreciated.

We are planning to do the tourist things..don't get me wrong. We have a mix of ages in our group and I'm just trying to make sure we have options for all. We have two rental cars, so we can split up our groups...those who like driving around site seeing and those who like a bit more hiking, adventure and activity.

We don't mind getting a guide for fishing...and of course we would get the necessary license. On other trips we have taken, we've managed to find a spot or two that the early morning people could take off to for an hour or two while the rest of the group was waking upor getting things ready to go for the day.

I suggest hooking up with a guide first thing when you get here. Sit down over a cup o joe and talk about what fishing is open, locations and so on. Once you have it all doped out then you can be on your own. fresh water, salt water and stream fishing are all different and WA fishing regs are incredibly arcane and convuluted. The regs on a stream change every so often along the way for example.

I have hiked the Sooke Potholes. It is a lovely trail. Sooke is full of lovely trails, some inland, such as the Galloping Goose, and some along the water, like East Sooke Park. You will need to drive to Sooke from Victoria.

Frankly, though, I can't see why someone based next door to Olympic National Park for a week would want to go to Sooke to hike. I can understand a visit to Victoria because it is so different form the Olympic Peninsula, but Sooke itslef, although a great place to live, is not a tourist attraction. Why not take the teenagers to the many trials in ONP?

Sorry, that's "trails" not "trials." It wasn't a Freudian slip; I have nothing against teenagers.
